Lightbulb [translation]LINRAN's Light and Colour Tutorial + Mini tut || BIG download!

Update: translated a mini tutorial by TZA's request.

Hey guys, dunno if you know LINRAN, but he's a really awesome self-taught chinese artist. Check out his sketchbook here if you haven't already.

Anyways, on his blog he posted quite a nice tutorial about light, shadows, colour...and other various aspects that I found really helpful, a friend asked me to translate it for him and I thought why not? So here it is:

PS: I apologise for the bad translation, its my first time seriously translating anything so it came out a bit awkward. I tried to follow the original as close as possible down to the tone, but I think some metaphors and other various things probably got lost in the way....anyways I hope it helps some what!

PPS: I found the info on the colour palette very useful so make sure you check that out, it's around the second half

PPPS: sorry about the length! writings in chinese are much shorter than in english, it turns out. (either that or it's my bad translating skills...I bet its the latter )

This is positively eye-opening! I never figured out how to use RGB so I used HSB instead, but this is very valuable information. Thanks to Lin Ran for sharing and to you for translating!

An exercise I use for teaching colour in Photoshop is to paint brushstrokes over a layer of an unknown target colour, trying to match the colour by adjusting the sliders until the brushstrokes become invisible. You then repeat the exercise using each of the different colour spaces (RGB, HSB, Lab) to compare the ease of each method for selecting colours. My students find using the RGB sliders in the colour palette to be interesting and instructive, but generally the slowest and most difficult way of getting an exact match. The quickest, easiest and most intuitive method is to use the Lab sliders in the colour picker, which allow you to independently adjust value (L slider), chroma (distance from the centre of the ab square) and hue (direction from the centre of the ab square). I'm sure that with practice you could get quite quick with the RGB sliders though.

I vote for sticky. Also, it would be great if the images could be uploaded using the attachment manager, in case in a few years the hosting expires. It would be a shame to lose this one.

Thanks a lot for translating this for us unilinguals.

Yea....I vote for a sticky too.

PaperX tried uploading it to CA's attachment manager, however the file was too big for the size limit so he had to host it on his blog...

I just read the whole tutorial but I still find the part about the rgb sliders a bit confusing. I'll just go over it again.

The text is rather large. If the image was resized down so the text appeared in the same size it does on the forums, it could probably fit in the attachment manager.

I don't know why, but my experience with RGB is significantly different from yours.

This is conversion between RGB and HSB:
Brightness = (the most intense light/ 255)*100.

Saturation = 100 - (the least intense light/ the most intense light)*100

Hue: It's related to all three lights, but I haven't test it out yet.The next intense light deals ONLY with hue.
[COLOR="Red"]Colors with the same brightness and hue have the same value of most intense light.
Colors with the same saturation and hue have the same R/G/B ratio.
Colors with the same saturation and brightness have the same value of least intense light and most intense light(their roles might change, but the amount is the same).

I tested all the rules above and they all apply correctly.

Though I don't know if you are talking about the adobe HSB system though.

Anyway, great tutorial, an eye-opener.

Edit: I read through David Briggs's wonderful tutorial again, and discovered your brightness is actually the lightness in HLS color space. Oops, all these systems are getting on my nerves.
