mm, not much to crit, you're killing stuff again. On the chick with the staff, I might use that yellow line to silhouette the bottom of the staff, but that's nitpicky shit, on a speedy sketch.

man your drawing and coloring just get better and better, that Sargent study is insane, environment is so great, more studies on human anatomy can bring your character design more solid I believe, 5 stars from me

Your environments really are mindblowing! I've been wondering lately of a good method to get industrial/repeating shapes into my paintings. Currently i stick to pretty much default brushes (chizzled/soft edge) - so when im doing a building study or something less organic it becomes harder than it should be.
What would your process be like on something like Station complex? - if you can expose these lovely secrets! :3 Rock the fuck on though dude.

The Sargent-like stuff is awesome.
One day I hope to communicate that kind of freshness too. Rock on.

Hey Pavel! I meant to post about the last update but i never got around to it XD You're rocking these enviros - you've got a good focal point going there. I think you could work your compositions a lot more and have the eye dance around your painting more. Just make each element more strategically placed in your composition. Right now i see you using detail and a little color to put a focal point in there. there's one on the previous page that has more dynamic lighting (the one with dragons flying around) - I think it's much stronger. Push your light and shadow more and push your use of form - you're relying a lot on silhouette and color.
With characters, just use the same stuff you're using to make your enviros strong - put in a focal point and develop it a little more. And don't be afraid to use more dynamic lighting! Enough diffused stuff all the time, let's see some cast shadows and highlights in your environments and characters. Check out mike hernandez' use of light and shadow (and everything else XD): http://mikehernandez.blogspot.com/ Anyway, I'm all excited because I have had some great lectures on environments lately. I don't quite have the footwork in enviros to apply it all yet, but you do! So keep pushing yourself to try new stuff, you're rocking already, and there's so much more you can learn~ |

Blue Severin: Hahah thanks Sev! Will do if I revisit that paint again.
openanewworld: Thank you! Will work more on anatomy. (your character stuff rawks) algenpfleger: More character heavy paints are coming (including this update). Jackwhat: Most of the harder/industrial shapes I do this way - make a new layer, lay in the general shape I want and chisel away at it with an eraser. You can probably do that with masks and stuff... but I prefer a more manual way. I just use a combination of round and oil/chalk brushes. Station complex was done that way too, just establish the mood and gradually build it up. Hideyoshi: Haha common Lorenz, it wasn't that good ![]() David F.: Thanks! Fishspawn: Thanks Wes, you're right! Been working on those things, hope it will show in my work... awesome link btw .Creatinity: Cheers! pennington: Thanks, will try to get one up for next personal piece. Anyway... It's been less than a month so I think I'm improving my update speed. Well here is some stuff (will try to make the next update a bit better): Colour study: Some more colour studies (15 - 30 min each), hope no one will notice these And another one (yeah muted the palette in this one...)

J.roxanne: Hahaha thanks
.... I'm actually russian and a guy.Hideyoshi: Thank you Lorenz, actually I haven't done a traditional sketch for a long time... I learned to paint before drawing so my lines are pretty horrible usually (well trying to shade usually what kills me). I'll try doing some again now that photoshop has a rotate tool. Well another update! Hope I can keep updating this frequently. A self portrait... it's been so long since I did one and I guess the result speaks for itself (doesn't look like me). Had fun anyway - , inspired by Zhanglu, think I will do more. If anyone else was confused too, I'm not a girl or japanese haha.Another character based paint. Enjoy!

[ramble]Really beautiful painterly style you have going on in here , the volcanic thing and the last one are especially good when it comes to use of light.
Just minor things with them though, the volcanic one looks more like a hillside town that's been bombed in to the darkages by the little planey jobs, which thinking about it is more of a titling conflict. And the fencer girl could do with something/someone to be looking at, she's drawn her sword for no apparent reason. Goddamn can you do studies, they're not photorealistic but somehow get across more than the original, with a definite injection of your own style.[/ramble] real sweet work cheerio

Dude those color studies are rockin. I think the self portrait definitely has more structure than your old ones but you really need to get specific about the features. Go in there and measure angles and relative distances! Cool stuff man, keep up the hard work.

damn you Rayk, kicking way too much ass. The Character based paint of the face is alright, kinda a young Russian looking dude, but the self portrait of you in a dress with a sword definitely makes you look like a japanese girl

Great color studies. I wish I knew anything about color. the character with the sword, she doesn't seem to be standing on anything. It has to do partly with the plane of the feet, but also because she has no shadow. but it has great colors and brush work. definitely makes me want to paint more. cheers

young paddy1: Hey paddy! Thank you for the critique, you're very right - thinking out paintings is probably my weakest point. Glad you like my work
!Fishspawn: Thanks Wes! Will give another few a go soon. Blue Severin: hahaha, shush you!pennington: Cheers man, it does look odd now that you mention it.... Well another weekly update . I was asked so my process, so this week I'll put one up for the fencer girl. If anyone is interest, next week I'll put up the process for pipe place(but with less writing >>) .Note: Please excuse my awful grammar, typos and spelling mistakes. ======================= I usually start of by loosely laying the idea I have, concentrating more on colour and rough composition/shapes. I find getting the right colours in from the start helps to avoid many headaches later on. Since I mostly concentrate on lighting and mood, I don't thumbnail, instead I find playing with colour and shapes helps me arrive to where I want quicker and with less pain. I find that it's slower and harder for me to go from black and white to colour, so I don't bother with that mess and work straight in colour. My brush use varies from painting to painting, here I stuck with the round semi opaque brush initially. Once I'm happy with the mess I've made, I start to loosely refine the shapes. From here I start using a variety of brushes to help me establish hard/soft edges, colour opaqueness and texture. Although sometimes I start of with a variety of brushes and then switch to one or two till I'm done. Now it's just refining my painting and introducing few more colours to help make the image more readable. By this stage I'm trying to watch my distribution of detail to help with the eye flow. Final, I could probably take it further from here but I usually have more ideas that I want to start painting. I think that it's important that you make sure you do long and short paintings as both are very vital to an artist growth! (don't fall in the trap of only doing speed paintings, or only doing refined long paintings). I don't adhere to one process as I think it's bad, so I try to do something different each painting that I do. This way I think you have a better chance of learning something new and getting better. I used to be afraid of trying new things! So don't make that mistake, try out as many different ways as you can! ======================= Well I hope some one found this helpful (I don't think I'm fit to teach anyone yet, but maybe this will help someone). I'm still learning myself - so if I'm making mistakes or people have ideas for me try please share!!! Cheers ![]() Anyway, Started as a colour/painting experiment... hope it doesn't make anyones eyes bleed. Ciao!

I can't believe I didn't meet you at the workshop though. But then I hadn't checked out your stuff until now. Will you post in this thread? Maybe i did meet you!
