"fallen valkyrie" - a valkyrie that once served at Odin's side, she has been tainted by evil and banished to the underworld.
It's pretty open.. she no longer serves Odin but is more part of the underworld now.. enjoy!
FOR REFERENCE ONLY!!! and inspiration..
Awesome! Must resist temptation to draw mecha valkyries.
Dammit, folded - sure I can work the concept in properly so here's a few quick thumbs.
Feeling good about this one...
added some detail and colour..
Great work all round everybody.
IF THIS POST DOES NOT CONTAIN SKETCHES OR PAINTINGS - REPRIMAND ME!
Great round folks!
Another edit: Fresh wip, still clinking away:
Edit: Here's the pencil sketch I'm going to work from:
I was most impressed by the relationship Valkyries used to have with wolves and ravens that got lost in the later romantic depictions of them. I thought of the fallen Valkyrie as being an agent that may work against the Valkyries still in good standing. Instead of delivering fallen warriors to Valhalla maybe she would feed them to Loki's demon army or something. I'm going to try to show some mind vs. body conflict in her too. Her noble soul is trapped and forced to witness the rudeness her body has set out to do. It will work or I'll fall on my hind
I'm hoping to have her wrapped up by tomorrow since the weekend is shot for me. We'll see.
I'm in too, w.i.p. pending. This is a good excuse to start reading the Volsung Saga too...
The ONLY REQUIREMENT IS ARMOUR!! so wrap her in some armour of some sort... otherwise valkyries are FEMALE only apparently...
but I think this is heaps more open than last round.. anything goes..
and the little sentence after the topic is just a background story on this fictional character. and it's upto you how you design this. and if you are not sure what valkyrie is check the link provided, 5 minute read will give you an idea that valkyrie is from norse mythology, female who served odin.

dont have a lot of time this week... out on business all next... so I thought I would at least take a stab at this... so to speak hehe... CC always welcome... nice to hear early on prior to getting bumped from a poll
The Valkyrie…deities who once sat beside Odin, to be sent out during battle and who’s purpose was to choose the most heroic of those who had died and to carry them off to Valhalla. Eventually they became indiscriminate in their killings… more than the rightful hero’s were taken.
Now finding themselves cast out by Odin for doing “too good” of a job. Any and all that enter the battlefield are now their prey.
Once beautiful…now crones, with flickering armor that can be seen flying about the battlefield, flashes of spear, splashes of blood… these would be the remnants of war now...Telltale signs of their further carnage. Leaving each man to wonder what his fate would be now in this early afterlife.
Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possiblity of cheating. it is either good or bad. ~ Dali
Here's mine. I went for a sort of zombie barbarian valkyrie heh.
It initially was in colour, but when I set it to grayscale for a value check, I liked the B/W much better.
hmm isn't there an attachment option when you edit your post?...I hope photobucket won't delete this
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee zwei's first CHoW sketch
woa! too many , i will try to comment on the voting,
thanks for your time everyone.
--beware my crappy encoding!
Okay, here's my initial sketch.
The idea is that she is "fallen" in the sense that she has too much compassion for the mortals she is supposed to judge impartially.
I hope to include a lot of "wing" details in the armor in the finished piece, as well as really work on her expression (she's supposed to be singing a lament.) Since I had been doing wolf and moon studies for last weeks CHOW, I decided to include her mount, a white wolf. Carrion birds fly in the distance.
Started painting tonight. Here's a detail of the face:
Okay, this is as final as I'm going to get for now. Wish I had more time to really work it. SIGH. Gotta learn to work faster, but this is my first CHOW, my first finished digital painting and my first time working with the Intuos tablet and damn it I was gonna get something done!
no where near done, but this is all i could get to
My WIP, only a quick sketch for now :
Woaaah i'm late and it's totally unfinished... I didn't had a lot of time to draw this week argh. It didn't end up like I wanted to...
Cakeypigdog : thanks! I like a lot your style on the valk and the red riding hood!
Woodlandwalker : thanks
Graphuji : Yeah, the pose was weird, I tried to fix it. thx for the crit!
Bumskee : lol ! Your's is definitively my fav, powerful and dynamic..wow, I'm always impressed with your works! --just not sure about the tail
This is my final. Haven't got any more time.
ok i am in. going to try for a more ambitious piece this time.
here are my thumbs for the valkyrie
probably going to go for the last one...
here are my pencils!
wip paint got to go to bed now, will try and finish tomorrow!(nearlly done!)
ok chaps final. i got a bit lost on tis one: think i tried to hard and lost all my flair and fun. might opt out for a while and get some much needed studies under my belt.
I'll try and do something a bit more finished this time. Initial blobs... I normally sketch something out in line, so I don't really know what the hell I'm doing with this! Pose crap... must sort it... She looks like Asterix!
I decided to put a bit more movement in it, and changed the sword to a spear. Not necessarily a good idea! She looks like she's scaring the crows away at the moment! Still got a bit to do...
Thanks for the crit Sve, Jakkas, Cakeypigdog, Graphuji, Bumskee, et al! Gotta say, so far my fav is Lukavi's: fantastic design! And Maxetormer, ours are very similar in idea, but yours is a much better composition.
Final version, although I think I'll come back to it some other time; there's a lot I should tweak, but I don't have the time today. Bleh...
The crows were at it again. Their constant cawing and squaking drove Modrigan beyond reason, their black empty eyes mocking her. So once more she chased them off, and once more she cursed Odin for her banishment; and like some Norse Don Quixote, forever chasing demons of the mind, she lost herself in hate.
Okay, I couldn't figure out how to fix the hip, so I hid it! Did a little more work to it, and called it done. I don't know if this is "finished' enough to be eligible, but I don't want to look at it any more. ;-)
If I get lucky, I'll find the time to finish my first entry.
Ok, I'm in.
EDIT: all done. with a day to spare for once.
Here is my WIP i'm going to try and finish it up soon
Its been a while since i have posted in here. I liked this concept idea. I don't think I'll have time for color though.
Hope you all dig it.
Done. Crits always appreciated. So much good stuff around here.....
The valkyrie is rising up from Helheim Hell Hall (Norse mythology's Hell) and has been in the service of Hel (deity who rules Hell). After Odin dismissed her of her duties, she was relegated to Hell Hall and stripted of her powers. Hel felt a bit sorry for her and made her become a servant of the underworld. When called upon, she rises from the red burning depths of her new home, surrounded by the fallen warrior souls she collects. Her once gleaming armour has patina'd over time, as she surveys the aftermath of a battle with her coal black eyes, she looks for more souls to collect to bring back to her mistress, Hel.
WIP, i hope i can finish it today
after she banished by Odin, she joins Loki's side, serving him as the servant of Hel, Loki gave him special gift, a special left hand armor made from remains of the hand of Tyr that bitten off by Fenrir, and a sword that made from the same material of the dart that killed baldr.
wow theres alot of cool stuff here. figured id give it a go.
heres my first little pen scribble
heres me redrawing it in pencil. on crapy paper.
gona redraw it agin on bristol or in ps and try to paint it
edit: haha i just noticed you can see her hand thru the spear
First time on this thread. Good starting subject for me. Definately sounded like a fun subject. First thing I thought of was a Valkyrie rising out of Hel to lay some vengance upon her "weak" sisters.
Here is my WIP so far. I hope to have this finished Fri afternoon.
Well here is my final...... I am still getting used to painting in the digital world (The college I went to was almost purely traditional)
BTW I intentionally made the head on the spike a little smaller. In most Mythologies the gods and often their agents were considered giants. So I decided that a Valkyrie could be like 9 feet tall just to add to sheer terror of their presence.
Any and all crits welcome as always
