Cosmic Space Jellyfish Adventures

I've resisted joining for over a year now since every time I visit CA I feel like I should get better before signing up or I will feel awful in the midst of all of these amazing artists and then I finally get the guts but they've become even more talented and it seems like I got worse and at that point my head explodes and the last thing on my mind is joining CA since I don't have a mind at all anymore.

Anyway... I'm Alice, a sixteen year old artist, writer, geek and gamer. Lately I've been spending too much time on my Wii and not so much on art, but hoping to change that and meet some new people! I like kitties and top hats. If you like kitties and top hats, we have two things in common.

Doodles, new and old.

The oldest stuff here is five months, newest stuff is this week.

Be gentle.

Beautiful clean line work. Don't worry too much about getting better, you'll miss all the fun you can have right now. Improvement takes time.

Great stuff here, Alice. I'm really glad you finally decided to post! Your faces are unusually strong and expressive, and your figure proportions/shape are impressive!

Your colors are pretty, but sometimes flatten out a bit plasticky. Maybe playing around with some warm/cool lighting conditions will give you that touch you need to get the extra dimensionality from having colors that don't just change darker or lighter, but warmer and cooler as well.

Some people are real rigid "warm light cool shadow/cool light warm shadow" people and that can feel a bit formulaic, so my tack is not to take that as a law, but an occasional guideline of something to look for. But you'll have to be doing observational drawing/painting from real 3-d objects to really pick it up.

be careful with the placement of the eyes though, seems a tad bit too high up.

welcome to the forums.
your stuff looks pretty damn good, especially the painting style. I'd like to see more studies from life, tho.
The people here will definitely give ya good advice.
Remember to look at other art for inspiration and not just to compare skills. I've found that if you look at too much crazy badass art, you begin to feel like crap.
well, that about all I can say.
peace

softocean: Thanks!
Camara: Shut up man, you've got some hot ladies and interesting ideas.
draw: Maybe I shouldn't have said anything as I like to be judged not by my age but by my actual ability. Thank you though!
designboot: Thanks!
Jason C-M: I'm proud of my application but when it comes to choosing the right shades to use I'm practically color blind. I'll definitely try to get some life paintings going, thank you!
DARAF: I'm trying very hard to get rid of it. Curse the day I watched DBZ!
Tigermilk: Thanks, I'll keep it in mind!
kuroart: Sometimes I wish there were interesting things around me to draw so I would do it more, but here you go. It usually goes like this... Awe > Inspiration > Attempt > Failure > Self Hate.

My cat is spoiled rotten.

Just quick photo studies. I need to attend a real figure drawing session.

A doodle I did last night. (Her head is falling off and the background needs major work.)

Hey, I'm really enjoying this sketchbook here, very nice for 16, I'm only 15, just turned...Hopefully I'll be as good as you by that time =)

Also, where do you study, do you go to a high school for the arts?

Thanks drd! I flirted with an arts school very briefly in fourth grade but got kicked out for being a misfit, so I'm completely self taught pretty much. College is looming over my head and I'm sure that will change soon.

Very nice. Keep working on proportions. Love the style of the last image in post 1 - what field are you thinking of going into...? Comics are quite fun

Thanks for stopping by TheGnoll!
Discoskull: I'd love to do comics professionally as they're my first love but it won't begin to pay the bills. I'm releasing a four volume series in the next couple of years but I don't expect to make a penny off of it. I'll probably end up working as some bitter 3D/texture artist on a game I hate.
drd: Don't say that! Complete self instruction is a solitary, dismal, uphill battle and I'm going to burn myself out by the time I'm 30 while you'll still be kicking strong.

A painting in its very early stages, so any and all advice is welcome! I've been playing too much Twilight Princess, I think the colors suffered from it. I'm going to darken his face.

Good idea, yes, he looks a tad too pale.

But, man...what program do you use? If it's photoshop, can you tell me what brushes you use, because I've never been able to attain the sharpness and clarity that your images have...do you just do a sharpen layer afterwards?

I think the composition is strong on this one, good job. =) But I'm a sucker for Vert canvases, I think it'd look better if you had the canvas much taller, with more trees to lead the eye down into the scene below, you know? I think it'd add more atmosphere. =)

Photoshop CS. Most of my brushes are standard. If I'm posting on the web I sharpen the whole image after I've resized. A horizontal composition usually denotes peacefulness, which I really wanted to convey (in a twisted kind of way) but now that you mention it the cropping is a little tight. I'll see what I can do!
