Hey, haven't been in this section of the site for a while...
I've been working on this piece for longer than I want to say (two and half hours?). I think I get distracted too easily...
Anyhow, I'm really struggling to work out good techniques for blending in Corel Painter IX. I really would like to avoid blending stubs (which I have so far) and am trying to figure out how to use opacity to my advantage. As of yet, this is a good bit more sound of a drawing than what I normally get out of my time, but I digress.
I also need tips on how to add in a simple background when I stupidly forgot to put the character on a separate layer than the base background color. Anything other than to just caerfully paint around it?
Please, any tips, crits, or general comments are much appreciated!
Keep Painting! (:
Alright, I had to step away or a while to get some stuff done (damn real life...), but I'm back for now! I've been focusing mainly on the undersketching at this point; I want to get a good finished feel for the pose. I'm finding that I'm having trouble with his right leg (the one closest to the veiwer). Any tips?
EDIT - I'm going to rotate the axe so that the blade is vertical, not horizontal. Makes the wings more workable...
Looking good, as for the background just do it on a separate layer and erase the overlap when you're done then neaten things up.
btw My vote goes for the axe, I like it.
I hope you don't be mad with me, but I took your image and made a sketch, I just wanted to show you how bad your demon can be, how monster he should be..
Keep it up and work hard on this. It's looking very interesting.. and I agree with Duman!
My reason for the talon, besides that it can look super kick ass, is that a hand is an incredibly dynamic extremity. You can craft it to do a number of things, reaching, a clenched fist, pointing, all the while looking demonic and creepy. The axe, on the other hand, Ha another freaking pun, Im so good at this, is really just an axe. In this case, an axe attached to the stump of an arm, which realistically would fall off and hurt like hell after the first swing. Unless its grafted onto the bone, that would be awesome. You could make it a killer bone axe, half the guys freaking arm bone, half a lava infused obsidian axe blade. So really, both of your options can look incredibly cool.
Make up your mind!
I actually thought the axe in newt's paint over was being held by a hand and it just recedes back intot he spaceof the picture, I don't think he intended it to be perceived on the same plain as the body.
Why the hell can't I see Augmenton's latest attachment from today?
Hmm, what's my latest one? The one that just says "Hmm, interesting concept..." has no more to it, just the words.
As for the hand, it is supposed to be receiding into the distance. However, the wing screws up the dynamic and pulls the arm forward. So, I will have to re-do it anyhow. I'm still leaning towards the axe, though. I'll have to screw around with it and see what I come up with. However, that's for tomorow's post. I don't know if I'll work much more on it tonight (it's one in the morning as it is!).
go with the axe, i think it really works for him, although i'd like to see more equipment on him, maybe some bracers and a conan/wrestling champion belt LOL. i did a quick re angling of your wings. you just drew them on a flat plain is all, you'd done a good job on keeping him turned though.
Alright, I haven't done a whole ton of finishing work on it... Atleast, not nearly as much as I should have. However, I think I found a comfortable position for his left (our right) arm, and I have his feet/legs more or less how I want them. I plan on texturing the skin, a lot of which was lost when I downsized it for this thread, but you can see some of it on his shoulder. I still have to re-work the left wing (as Truepinkas noted) because the new arm position frees that space up a bit.
After I finish up the body, here's what I plan:
(1) I would like to add more equipment (not sure wat, but I like broken chains and whatnot)
(2) He will have a tail (I know, part of the body, but I sort of forgotto add it...)
(3) A background (broken rocks and lava for another lightsource?)
What's everyone think?
The axe idea is much better.. and you're doing very good on painting it.. just the legs are still bad in my opinion.. I don't know maybe someone can re paint it and show you where is wrong! KEEP IT UP!
Hmm, what do you see off in them? Size wise, I want to keep them small and kind of stocky, so he kinda looks a little lumbering. Are the general mechanics of the legs wrong, i.e. they're angled or bent incorrectly? And they are far from being finished render-wise...
ok.. I think his thighs are too close to his body.. maybe you could put them a little low! It seems they aren't starting above his waist.. I thinks you can solve that! (:
