I recently completed this painting. Please let me know what you think.
I think it's lovely. It is extremely elaborated and scrupulous style but in my eyes it doesn't look forceful or uptight. The fluidity of glass texture and this truthful effect of lemons swimming weightless in the water makes it looks effortlessly done for me.
I even have this sensation of motion, of glass flowing within the form and the lemon slices rising up and descending in between top and bottom.
I think it is a rare thing to see in art and I think you did a beautiful stylization of life, very truthful, but still an art, not a copy.
Transparency and effect of broken shapes in water is very appealing.
Crits: The darker corner of the table on the top of the page. Do you see? it is dominating very much, stealing the focus and really doesn't carry any information to us. And it is too dark, IMO. Values should recede gradually in any case, it shouldn't be even lighted all the way, I think, closer to us spot should be brighter and next to it a little less.
I imagine this still life being placed on the white piece of paper and with very bright light aimed on it. Well, it shouldn't be such a sharp drop in values right after paper list ends and the whiteness of paper should effect the rest of the setting as well, IMO.
I might suggest to make it blue, the dark corner I mean.
Overall it is a beautiful painting and it has lovely emotion too in my opinion. It relaxes me. and gives me very clean feeling (because of the subject, obviously and your manner to paint).
