You've got a nice sense of composition, cool!
Yeah, besides Ramalooke's tip, for landscapes I can say also that you could do the sky and the - I forgot the exact word in English - floor first. After this you'll already have some of the most important colors of the composition, and will be able to pull the atmosphere effect easier, relying only on opacity to get it's the main colors.
Having the main colors of earth/forest/snow/grass, whatever covering the horizont line of your composition will allow you to think in the best colors to mix with it, to add some visual interest and others to contrast with this, to render the light and shadows.
Well, it's not like I'm experienced with landscapes, I just started studing this, but working this way was effective for me.
P.s.: I hope this post doesn't land on moderation too. >.<

Rama - k.
Nim - Danke.
Vielmond - I think ground is the word you're looking for... Thanks for the idea, I'll be sure to give it a shot.
I've been trying to come up with a decent method of getting everything down right with minimal alterations and corrections, it's difficult, but I'm going to nail it. Life paintings and still life studies in straight into colour are good practice, hard as fuck.
I'd have more to show here but I've had a few crashes this week and lost studies halfway through, not happy.
Guess I'll do some more.

Something from my head I want to spend more time on, today was environment day and as unproductive as I have been lately I was set on at least getting something to a stage where I can come back and remember what was going on in the image, motivation to continue.
I feel like this is an improvement on my older works because although it is no more finished than anything else I have done, as finishing work seems to be a problem for me, it's at the same level as my older work while still being very early in. It gives me hope and makes me think that perhaps I actually am improving, slowly.
The basic gist so far is some extraction taking place in a jungle whilst other parts of this random force engage strange blue lights in the mountains. I intend to have the rearmost vtol in a stage of blowing up, whilst the foreground has just taken off, leaving men behind. I'll colour code the energy blasts and what not in this fight to match the background, hopefully that will create some unity.
I've also tried to pay more attention to colour and composition in this piece. I knew I wanted the image to have a lot of cool colours, so I started with a warm monochromatic sketch, putting blobs down and moving things about until I had some nice shapes that (hopefully) keep the eye moving around the page for longer than my previous work.

I like your environment experimentations, I think do some small colour thumbnails on a whole page. Also some quick colour studies for different pallets.
Then do a massively detailed space port with a main ship coming into dock, with the suggestion of thousands of smaller ships docking in the background. Have the ship partially damaged as if it coming in to get immediate repairs. Just thought it would be cool to see.
