Yeah I would agree with dogfood. Personally, the interaction and dynamism are really well defined.
Not to pre-empt or answer for him but in terms of process and thought patterns; what were you thinking when you created that piece? How did you construct the figures, emote the drama of the hunt and the killing strike,...etc?

yeayah... more animals. they rock (the drawings of them). as for your response to what i said earlier... your probably right. you gotta get those proportions spot to get some likeness. that's why you gotta take care of that in the early stages- when you're still loose. gotta use those plumblines, compare some angles and whatever. anyhoo, cheers Lee! dig the updates

See? Sweetness. (Save for the elephant, which has all-together too many straight lines; go here and read everything. Don't be fooled by the subject matter, this stuff is pure gold.)
Here's what I think is happening: when you are drawing people, you think you know what people look like so you dive in with preconceived notions. Heck, you see people every day! You must know what they look like and should be able to reproduce their likeness at will, right? Well, when the graphite meets the paper, your hand realizes that's not all true, while your brain, who's been fooling you into thinking this for years, says, "keep going, I know what I'm doing". But it doesn't. It's feeding you a line, selling you meteor insurance, telling you the check's in the mail, that of course it will respect you in the morning, and the Easter Rabbit spends its August vacation with Santa in St. Inez. So, your hand stilts along, hoping things will work out and wondering why that eye is a little off, never realizing the brain has stole his lunch money and is behind the bleachers with his girlfriend. The brain can be a real ass.
When you're doing animals, the brain knows it can't get away with that crap, so it tosses up its ganglia and says, "don't look at me, talk to the eyes." So, BAM, the eyes take over. They see the fluid motion, the off-set curves, the relations... and the hands start having hot, steamy sex with the pencil, spewing the love fluid all over the paper.
dogfood: you're right, when doing portraits, I do have a tendency to draw what I know rather than drawing what I see. Even though I know its wrong, I still do it. It's a habit that needs to be fixed.

Listing: thanks ... I'm going to start working on anatomy as soon as the bridgeman books I ordered arrives. I would do studies of Hogarth but his style is a bit over exagerated.

I'm digging the female head study....in terms of the shape, construction and such. Very nicely done. Would have to agree that the shadows do look a bit mudged, could be handled with a bit more subtlety...but you're just coming back to the game..so you're still in that finding your footing stage. The animal studies are coming along...as well as this devil here. Not quite sure about the last one though.
The marks you're making with the pencil are coming from all different directions at the same time. Some of the nicest mark making ive seen runs between Marko and noshadowmaster. Check them out and see how they let the marks define the volume.

very promising sketchbook.I like the way the pen/pencil flows in post 62 and 63.But try and work on the internal structure of things, to make sure proportions and foreshortening is right.About the kraft paper experiments, slow down with that rendering.Might be terribly boring, but to get a real smooth rendering you need to slow down and define those lines.Don't be afraid of laying down some strong contrast.Keep 'em coming
Helzon: thanks, that head i actually used some guide lines to position facial features. Guess when I'm sketching stuff pretty much close to life size, I need those little guide lines.
TheGnoll: thanks, yah I know should slow down with my rendering, but I'm sooooo impatient . I'll work on being more patient on the rendering, maybe I can get some decent pieces out

Hi, I'm enjoying your sketchbook. I know hat it's like to try and get back into it - I've just started again too.
From what i've seen here though it's all coming back to you pretty quickly.

thanks, I still got a way to go to get back to where I was back then, but overall, the progress seems pretty good. The main thing I have to get back is being able to put that one confident stroke instead of 3-4 strokes.
Haven't done anything the last couple of days ... Thought i would work on one of the unfinished sketches that I started but my laziness got the better of me
Anyhow, here are a couple of those sketches ... please let me know if they are worth finishing or not

Hey Lee this last one has some brilliant flashes in it. I knew you were going to sand bag us.
The things that are detracting to my eye,
1) The septum...looks connected to the back of the upper lip.
2) That curve for the upper lip looks a bit dented in.
3) That incredible bit of hair ends odd and choppy into the black.
Other than that those eyes are a huge leap forward for ya.
