Good work man. The lines are much cleaner. The first watercolor looks good, is it a mix with pencil or watercolor only ?
How's school going ?
oh and... update more often !!!!
Very impressive sketchbook... I hope i can get to your level some day!
Sorry if it has already been asked but I am just curious... what type of pencil are using?
"Art is the proper task of life. "
hey guys thanks for the comments
DanielC- yo dude, long time no speak lol. Thank you, school is aight- but busy at the moment
Lifewontwait- thanks, though theres a way higher standart to aim for than mine! i usually HB or 2b but i'll use what evers lying around- sometimes even shit like 7b
ok heres some stuff, its a bit of a teaser update i guess, theres some bigger peices about to start, so ive been doing lots of quick sketches and set ups for that but yeah i still havent been drawing as much as i like, gotta watch those damn tendons D:
i went to this Pixar exhibition and saw some awesome drawings, now im really into pastel lol! so i have a piece planned, this was a quick study for a section of it.
this one is also for the above mentioned piece, the picture is actually going to be more of a fun bit of composition, playing with heaps and heaps of golden ratio divisions
a tree growing out of a giant bird skull
this is an initial doodle i did for something at school
this is where that idea is at now, its a take on little red riding hood and ill have a colour thumb to show tomorrow hopefully...
so yeah lameish update i guess
sweet, it looks like you are tackling those bigger pieces with thought and planning... something that i should learn to do!!!
keep in mind when drawing faces that because the base of the nose is on a plane pretruding from the skull in profile view, it needs to look like that in perspective aswell.
so in perspective, the base of the nose is not always directly in the middle of the eyes, but closer to one of them. (i.e. closer to the eye turning away from the viewer)
you also seem to draw mouths abit too wide and big.
thank you both very much
thanks for the crits archi- i was actually thinking about that nose thing the other day, well spotted, cheers man
well im at my years aniversary since tendonitis turned my world upside down and im only just getting a really good phase of recovery Its been a really intense mental journey, drawing is something i have always done and when i discovered CA i was filled with even more passion but then only after a few months i was reduced to a spectator. I was so frustrated by what i could have maybe done with this past year, but now im in a much better headspace- sometimes things like that just happen and whilst frustrating it is not the end of the world.
I do feel like having this kind of injury for so long makes you appreciate the little things more, i treasure everytime i put pencil to paper now and im finding as a begin to get back into the swing of things im no longer frustrated by tackling other mediums as much. Having so much time away from art was not all bad either, i feel like i salvaged what was a potentially a disaster of a year by getting more into excersise and reading and finding otherways to engage my brain. I spent alot time stuck in my own mind and there was times when it was shithouse, but hanging out with friends and other worthwhile activities really helped me get through it. Late night conversations about art with archipelago were great
I guess what i got out of this whole experiance is a sense of making sure you take control of what you can, but not letting the things you cant control take you down. I also have an appreciation of how long it does take to develop a mastery of a craft, and that stressing about where your currently at is ultimately self defeating. You really need to learn to enjoy the ride, otherwise you wont stick it out. Im still not fully over this injury, but im certantly capable of drawing regularly again- which is amazing fun. I hope that no one else has to deal with such a long term hurdle, but you can definatly get over it with a good mindset. So yeah, this is just a wierd rant lol, i guess i like the idea of this having more than just pictures in my SB- a little bit about me could be fun to share heh
I finish my exams next week, then i will graduate year 12! I feel like my life is just begining (we spend so much time in school its seems crazy to finally be leaving it). The future seems exciting!
ok heres a few pages that i thought were ok, not much but yeah im determined to keep this baby updated to the point where people may even want to look at it lol
this entry you wrote literally brought a tear to my eye
It is going to be an amazing summer when you guys come up here. we should start planning the dates and stuff soon dude!
good Bridgeman studies, ive been digging him lately too!
Your heads from imagination are good proportionally in terms of features, but you really need to start thinking about the skull, the jaw, the chin, etc.
Learn how far away the contour of the jaw is from the facial features when you see a face from the front, 3/4 view, etc. learn the contour of the cheek, the frontal lobe etc etc.
generally the measurements are longer than you might think...
also, make sure that all the features line up in perspective!!
Ive got some goodies for you by the way, expect to see them on the weekend
good luck with the exams, say hi to everyone for me, I miss you guys, I really do
edit: oh yeah and that girl from life in that second last one, wow!!
some SB pages, SP's+ hands, um ssome studies and a few doodles oh yeah and some grass.
hey spade, thought i would drop you a line
there is great progression in here and its awesome to see you are in the right mindset...i think you'll improve very fast
those last few figures and characters are nice, great to see you doing those anatomy studies, think they will help your work a lot
keep it up!
aha! i finally caught this!!! my quest to figure out who registered under this name has come to an end
anyways, good studies and good improvement from page 1.
spade (the red one)
Amazing work in both quantity, progress and quality (especially recently). The face bottom right on this guy is outright awesome.
Regarding the convos previous about the head proportions, I just remember that they're usually 5 eyes wide, ending around where the cheek bone sucks in. From my eyes some of your portraits look a tad wide.
Your progress reveals you've addressed this, but I would focus upon adding more contrast in your work. Specifically those beauty pages, full of intermingled drawings that can use a more defined focal point. Heck, push the ends of the spectrum of shadow/highlight to give your work that much desired depth!
Keep it it Spade... keep it up
hello and thanks for the feedback!

danielC- hey hey, good advice ill try!
