hey ,evrything is looking good, keep trying to get more variation .
keep it up .james
Fishspawn: Ah thanks! I'm going to redo that paint as I like the idea but few fix ups are needed.
Okay some more Bridgman studies (mouth and nose tomorrow me thinks)
I decided to do a 30 min sp every day yesterday (not showing that monstrosity). This is todays one. Apparently my parents said it doesn't look like me, so maybe not much of an sp.
Some turtle studies before I start on my COW entry.
Fishspawn: Thanks man, yeah sp's are fun but frustrating (cos I suck at people).
Call0ps: More enviros soonish.
Well again Bridgman studies
SP for tonight, yeah doesn't look like me . Bit sucky but put some colour in for fun.
So ideas for COW, I've started to thumbnail the painting so those are coming tommorow.
Good to see some self portraits , maybe try doing one just blocking in values ,maybe with your watercolours , i find them easier.I think you should look at where the neck coneccts to the head.
keep it up .james
Fishspawn: Thanks, I took a slightly different road.
guitarjames: Yeah I tried some copics today, just ruined the whole thing >_<.
Ok more bridgman study
Todays sp, damn looking sucky. Can anyone give me some pointers what to try? Also I need some help with rendering with pencil. Cheers, thanks in advance!
Okay more thumbs on COW, will start the paint tonight.
Thanks again for the feed back guys!
I'd reccomend that along with your 30 m self portrait, either for warm ups or afterwards (try both ways) do a bunch of SP gestures. Go for quick emotions, blind contours where you focus on learning and remembering facial traits. Go for proportion and overall value as fast as possible. See how you like it
hey! way to go on the sp's. one every day will definitely help you. your eyes and mouth are just a little too big. you render the bridgman studies beautiffuly, specially the lips and noses. maybe it would help if you got a flashlight and took pictures of yourself in the dark or something. try using a side lighting and add a couple values. oh and watch the mouth it looks low, or too far away from the nose. but you're doing really good they have nice form and i can't wait to see the cow.
Fishspawn: I tried doing a few rough warm up todays, not sure if it helped.
pennington: Ahh thanks on the feedback!
Thanks on the feed back guys, I've also had feed back from my dear so trying to put all of that together. Today had a long day at work so really tired, but still did 30 min sp.
Good job on that one, getting better. Don't be afraid to just draw the lines for your face and look at a reference pic of someone else to put dynamic lighting, trying to map it to your face. I think some studies of the whole skull/proportions of the features would help both of us. Keep up the hard work.
Fishspawn: Thanks man, yeah we gotta push on forward!
Call0ps: Thanks .
Well here is todays sp, kinda doesn't look like me....
WIP of COW, running behind the schedule >__<. Gotta finish it tomorrow.

I think the main weakness in your faces (and mine) is the proportion/transition of the space above and below the mouth with relation to the rest of the face. Cow looking good. If i were you i'd cheat a little and make the bg a little lighter on the left behind the standing guy in the corner. Either a light source or just light refracting around him from the lava(?). I also think you could push the contrast on the horizon a little, just looks kind of muddy overall (more so than it should.) Keep up the good work, we've gotta keep this ssg alive!
The noses look strange in your self-portraits but I like your style, keep it up!
Also, your icon rocks
Fishspawn: Thanks for feedback, I usually leave the lighting to the later part of painting, but yeah I will get some red light refracting around him to make him pop.
alenacat: Thanks! Yeah noses and mouth (and eyes) are problems for me.
Well an update of COW wip before I run off to uni.
Hey man, I like that you're working on life stuff, cuz it'll get your skills up quick. I think you're trying for too much detail before you have basic structure down. An exercise I reccomend would be to set up one strong light source and do a self portrait in value only, no line. Pay close attention to the shapes and proportions, make sure the shadows are the right shapes, and you'll get a good likeness.
Blue Severin: Thanks for the help .
Well today I rushed the COW and also did a sp. Not sure if I should do them all from mirror or photo (or bit of both?). Well anyway here is the sp, tried Severin's idea (was in front of mirror with side light coming in), black pencil. Looks pretty damn hideous ~__~.
"The Lava Swimmer"
The first mineral based life form was discovered on EN37. However study of the creature has so far proven to be nearly impossible as the creature causes a volcanic eruption each time in emerges on the surface. It is believed that the creature is entirely made of mineral and spends most of it's time swimming in the molten lava below the planets surface. Although how that works is still a mystery.
yeah but it was you very first try, don't be so hard on yourselfLooks pretty damn hideous ~__~.
also try and think of it as planes with perspective
the line sp's are getting better and nice cow.
Do SPs from mirror, life drawing is better practice. Cow is a cool idea, but i agree with blue, theres a lot of detail but no substance. Focus on interesting composition, values and lighting before you go into detail. Keep doing the sps, eventually you'll start to see a likeness.
Wow~! I definately see alot of improvement from the first couple pages of your sketchbook in comparison to the stuff you have up more recently. Very great work. I would have to say that your facial structures on your human figures lack a little more form (like others have pointed out). I noticed this problem in the first page, you did fairly good backgrounds and creatures but your humans were a bit weak (structurally and anatomically). You got a good base to become really amazing though and I don't doubt that you will become great, or greater than you are in your current state.
it's a sketchbook....
pennington: Hey thanks man, just hard to be less on self after seeing pencils of Wesburt.
Fishspawn: Yeah, mirror is the go I think (I found using it is a bit easier in some ways). With the COW... heh, lesson learned - don't leave to last minute >_<.
Zoroko: Thanks man . People are definitely my single worst area - and figures are such an important part of art!
Well dead today - I left home at 6:45am for uni and came back at 7:30pm so yeah.... Anyway did an SP per usual, from mirror but using a chalk pencil. The eye ball sizes are different hahaha, realized it after I applied fixative. I'll put the stuff I do in animation subject later (monkey jam site is down so I can't dl it >_<).
And yeah, huge thanks everyone - your feedback is really helpful .
Fishspawn: Yeah, I hope you right about breakthrough !
Well was busy today with uni work /other but did the daily sp. Amazing thing, this is my 10th one and it still doesn't look like me! ~____~
Edit: Page 8!!! What a crappy start on it though... gotta get my act together.
