I think the problem you ran into is that it required people to happen upon it at the same time and then meet a deadline with an un specified start time. It's not a bad idea, but just wasn't executed properly. try this...
1. Start a thread announcing the start date. Set it for the next day or a couple of days later. Anounce the start time and that it will be a one-hour T-dome, but don't give the subject yet.
2. Once the appointed day and hour occurs. Give them the topic and then Rock n' Roll!
Anyway I wouldn't have minded seeing this as I'm a big cthulhu fan.

or better yet, give everyone a four hour window where the start time may or may not be... that way, you make sure that some people will be online watching and waiting for the start time, and you also make sure that people aren't cheating and drawing beforehand. same thing with the topic. who knows? you could actually make it a weekly thing.
"on the twentieth of March, sometime between 8 am and 12 noon GMT, the topic and start time will be announced for the next 'fast and brutal' (or BAM TD - I kinda like the name)"
or something like that.
