SirGreenSockThanks for stoppin' in! The multitudinous lines are a constant battle! Ha-ha! Every time I think I'm making headway they seem to swarm back worse than before. More and more people are commenting on it though, so it must really be an issue then... I shall double my efforts! ("The Emperor is not as forgiving...)
ATLAS2900Thanks for poppin' by! I'll try to bust some more color work out for you... I'm just lazy is all... See ya friday?
penningtonThanks for stickin' with me man! Means a lot!
Do I really? Ha-ha! Usually I feel like I'm just talking out of my ass! It does help me think critically about my own stuff when I'm doing it a lot for/with other people! I guess we need to talk more about planar studies... I try to keep it in mind, but I guess I don't always know what I'm lookin' for.
I'm always feelin' guilty cuz you leave great comments
guggenmaneuverI knew I should've updated last night! I was plannin on being at the very top of the page! Oh well! It's good to finally be on page three! Maybe now That fat kid will post 'cause he knows I'm serious about doing this thing! Thanks for the comments! I'm still fighting those lines, and sometimes I really struggle to find my forms... You're absolutely right though, and I am working towards that... despite appearences.
ZordHey thanks man! It's good to see new faces up in this joint! Don't be a stranger!
Okay, heres todays dump! I'm also working on some goals for the second trimester (May - August). You know... Something to work towards... Drawing in person and all that. Ideally, I'd like FIVE goals. So far I only have three:
1.Gesture: Working down to fewer lines. Also increasing speed and accuracy.I also want to do the general portfolio building, and maybe get some sort of extracurricular web presence going on... I don't know. What do you guys think? Is this too much? Do I need to be more specific in my goals?
2.Perspective: Mainly environments, props and how figures relate to them.
3.Anatomy: Duh! I've been making great strides (I think) but I have a ton of growth yet to do!
Anyway... here's the stuff.
I started this page off with the robot on the left... He kind of evolved. I was talking to someone at lunch when I did it, and wasn't really paying that much attention to it. Threre's some interesting bits to this guy, stuff I wouldn't have added or thought to add a couple of months ago. I think the anatomy studies help for building robots too. So that's heartening. Also the pose is something totally new for me. It's nothing terribly fancy, but it is much more dramatic and dynamic than the straight front or profile pose. The other robots are a new thing for me too... I was watching a short movie clip with Feng Zhu (from the ILM art department... he worked on EPIII) about drawing fighing robots, on the Gnomon Workshop website. One of the things he was doing was drawing these... Profiles? Basically they were shape outlines of robots. Like shadows. He was saying that he first looks for shapes that are interesting and work together well. He worries about functionality later... Seems like a good approach to me!
Started a blind contour of my father-in-law at dinner the other night... he was moving around too much though. I did another robot shadow... on the farm. I know, this is pretty much crap.
"I can't tell you how frustrating this is." The torso studies are killin' me, but thinking about it, I can't help but feel that this is the key to the whole figure. It's just as complex in its way as the face and hands, but gets short shrift... Soooo, I keep on working on it, and getting irritated by it. I'll get there eventually, and then (hopefully) the rest will fall into place. I've also been checking out Mentlers SB lately, and there's a TON of good stuff to study there! It's also inspirational to hear him say that the torso is an issue for him too...
I went and got Chinese take-out on my way home from painting a bathroom for a lady... I've been trying to make sure I take my "little book" with me places, so I can fill in the dead spaces by working on what I see. Anyway, here's the soda machine (well most of it, my food came before I was done) from the restaraunt. I was also trying to show more confident lines... less sketchieness, you know?
Did a copy of an Ian McCaig drawing out of the "Art of The Phantom Menace" book last night. I've always really admired his drawings, so I thought I'd give a go to a couple of them... maybe I'll pick something up. I think I'm a little obsessive compulsive, because I just couldn't leave the rest of the page blank. So, I did a little SP to fill in the space. I made a consious effort to make the nose short, because I think I tend to lengthen it for no good reason.
That's it for now... I'll be back soon!
P.S. What do you think of the new avatar and Sig? It's a little tribute to Zebs...
