When I use a palette knife in a nondigital painting, it smears only the wet paints. Therefore, if I let a coat dry, I paint some new details and I can smear only those details with the knife.
I just don't know how to do that with Painter. It's not just that the paint underneath is always wet. Even if I have no paint, it will smear the canvas color as if the canvas was soaked in white paint.
I thought the obvious solution was to add a new, empty layer. I paint on the layer and everything around it is shown as a transparent checkerboard. There's nothing on the layer except the new brushstrokes. And yet, when I use the knife, starting above the paint... it will still smear it with white! Where's that white coming from? It's an empty layer! It drives me crazy...
How can I use the knife on -only- the brush strokes that I want without smearing the imaginery white paint that Painter adds around them and between their squiggles?
Thanks for your help
