I'm a bit of an outsider to the visual arts (no talent, that is)... but I have had an interest in writing/producing a graphic novel or comic series. I'm hoping you will permit me a few 'dumb' questions about the medium and the business.
1. Why the large disparity between the style of graphic novels/comics and illustrated books? Many children's books, for instance, have a lush romantic or impressionist style vs the line-art, cartoon-y illustrations in comics. Is it a choice, a budgetary concern, both?
2. What would a decent per-page rate be for a self-financed endeavor that would be of a high quality? I'm not wealthy, but as someone in the arts I appreciate the value of professionals and would want to know what fair compensation would be.
3. Is art of this nature drawn to scale, or at a larger size?
4. What are realistic timeframes for work of this nature? A page a day... a page a week?
I do appreciate your help and patience. I know there aren't always definitive answers to these questions, but I wanted to get some information to see how to proceed with my projects.
