CROSSOVER- E.O.W Round #190 / I.D.W. Round #206
TOPIC = Orbital Refinery
This week we are having a weekly crossover with Industrial Design of the Week! Both weeklies have the same topic, however the approach will be different. Because of this, taking a visit to both threads will be sure to provide inspiration.
The basic concept: There is a materials refinery which is orbiting a planet as it sources its material. What planet and what material being processed is completely open.
Inside or outside view is up to you.
Design the refinery.
As Vulgar' is currently out of reach of the internet, I will be hosting until he gets back. Apologies in advance for any mistakes!

Thanks for the info. I've scrapped the design I had in my head (after seeing other peoples WIPs. Time for some inspiration.

A space refinery was put into an orbit around a planet, closest to its Sun. They found a new element on this planet which could withstand higher temperatures than any element known so far. 25 cargo ships move back and forth between the refinery and the planet, harvesting round the clock.

Been a long time since I posted anything in here, but this topic is too cool to pass up. Here is my idea; a mining station sweeping up the minerals from a ring planet.

Random crits!? There's no particular reason one person got a crit and not another other than something popped into my mind right away.
Pixeltuner: Your image is very pretty, but the composition is rather static. Everything is very horizontal, and although I see the perspective, its quite flat looking as well- there's a few reasons, but one of them is the texture- the scale, edge types and value differences are similar to those on the planet (bg) and on most parts of the ship. One last thing is that you're losing the definition of the front part as it has a close value to the space behind it.
Chris Sanders: The belly of your refinery is close to parallel to the horizon which isn't helping give a sense of depth.
Snafu: Your station looks awesome but this is almost something I could see as a general concept image for ID. The bg has some great potential but right now is lacking in depth- eg. your planet/moon just melts into the bg instead of layering if that makes any sense. I think you could also try a few different crops of this for a more dynamic look as you have a lot of space with nothing much going on.
General note: Try doing a few thumbnail sketches for composition guys, it really helps.
Thx Pixie I was looking in to 'blurring' the planet a bit more to get a better definition of depth and work some more on the sense of scale of the ship so yeah you're right ^_^

Remember- If you're already putting so much work into your EOW entry, it's substantially less work to do some orthos and maybe another mechanically focused image for IDW now that you have the design worked out! (...shameless plug I know...)
I'm joining the fun.
Here is a first thumb of an orbital water refinery. It is latched on to a captured asteroid wich has a core of precious ice. the water gets packed as cubes and is shipped to other space installations or dropped down to the terraforming colony on the barren planet below.
Pixie Trick: Definitely going to try and make some design for IDW as well
He guys I've been working on this for a while and I'm getting really stuck on this one, so some criticism is welcome...
On another note I really like the work you guys produce...
Seems to me you've finished the image mostly. The composition is a bit static but I think it works quite well and pulls the eye to the white center. You could maybe add some more defining details in that bright area. Like showing more clearly that the station is a refinery. The spheres could perhaps be containers for the final product? Is it liquid or gass? Maybe there are more pipes curving around them to suggest this? the tower on top looks a bit like an oil rig burner, maybe they burn off or release a bibroduct there? Just some more story elements basically.
Also: the light that hits the station looks white, while the atmosphere and space is blue. You could probably add some blue tint to the higlights and some reflected light from the planet at the bottom of the station.
