I worked more on the Melisandre portrait, and started coloring the wild girl
some work from today. I have more drawings but I can´t scan them now, so I´ll upload them tomorrow.
a digital sketch from imagination. I just wanted to practise rendering skin.
and 3 drawings, all using reference. first file is from an old friend of mine. completely failed the faces. the second is a full body sketch, since my sketchbook needs more of those, and the third are sketches from a film I should watch. Tried to be messier in that one, not sure if I like it.
Posting every day? Arrghh, you have to lend me some of your determination!
Your digital portraits look better and better. I really like red priestess (I love love love SoIaF!), but the last one is the best one!
Keep up hard work!
no pain, no gain
Hey Lagarto, some of your painting is turning out nice. And it's nice to see you taking a concerted effort to study anatomy. I would say you need to watch your proportions a bit, your heads are turning out a bit big and giving your characters a bit of a cartoony look. Maybe that's what you're going for though, so I won't presume. A good place to start with figures I found was with the Loomis book: http://www.amazon.ca/Figure-Drawing-...0537047&sr=8-1
Honestly that's a great place to start. And if you do some studies from that you'll be killin' it in no time. You might have already started there but I wanted to pass it along because it really helped me out. Keep it up!
GrayHouse I know I have that problem, and even when I´m being very careful I don´t realize it after I finished the pic, I´m working to solve it. I started studying with the loomis´book about a week ago, but lately I´ve been so busy. I´ll continue with it soon and thank you!
Ninsei almost everyday, but I try my best! Thank you so much! I will!
an apple study ( I´ve seen lots of apples here and I got jealous ), one character from imagination, a portrait study from a photo, another one from a Bouguereau painting, next is a little portrait from imagination after some studies and the next two drawings were vaguely referenced, but mostly from imagination.
In your paintings noses look somewhat weird. Apart from the fact they all look quite similar, I think you should pay attention to concavity at the top of the nose bridge, between eyebrows - it should be more obvious. Look at some pictures and see how light and shadow work in that area, and how nose bridge is (usually, and it's more evident in women I suppose) getting narrower going from the top to the bottom.
I hope it clear enough to understand.
no pain, no gain
Ninsei you are right, they all end up looking weird when I´m not using reference. I´ll do some studies to try to fix that.
small update today, cause I can´t use my scaner. I have lots of sketches to scan
some more work on the elf girl portrait, a little study of a puma, and a drawing from imagination I do like a bit.
You're steadily getting a good grasp of colour!!
Pretty stuff, but - try to understand the structure of eyesockets better. I see this in many of your faces, an eye sliding off the side and not really being inserted in the head.
I try to explain it here; the eye is a ball and there's a ring of bone around it, the eyelid must also be sort of ball shaped overlaying the sphere of the eye. Otherwise you get these strange distorted heads where the face is too large, and their hairline is too high, and the eyes are falling out of the skull. So try to always be conscious of the larger scale geometry, even if you love rendering details. For this reason I recommend using some flat tones while sketching too.
So I guess, look up Loomis for facial planes, but also look at some skulls and how the brow bone and cheekbone are structured (and how the nose comes out of that). You don't have to make a big anatomy study of it, but identify the bones under the skin to get some solid structure.

krisCrash thank you so much for taking the time to help me with the eyeballs issue. what you said is going to be helpful for sure. thanks again!
so as KrisCrash said, I need to work more on understanding the structure. I realize that when I´m doing a study from a photo, I´m not trying to understand it but to copy it and make it pretty, and that´s not the point in studies, I think. So I´ll try to change that. I´ll only try to make it beautiful if the structure it´s alright. So I did some heads focusing on structure.
after that, some neck studies, noses and some snowy mountains. I´m terrible at backgrounds...
It's nice to see you study so hard, and I can see improvement!
I really like the faces you draw, you have a beautiful way to draw the facial features...
be careful not to place the eyes too close together though, or make the heads too big
(especially visible in post #47).
It's very good that you try to keep thinking while practicing - something I always struggle with,
it's so easy to lose focus and just paint or draw mindless,
especially when using reference...
Keep up the studies!
Lyraina thank you so much! you are right, I´m always doing the head too big. must work more on proportions.
some poses (finally some full-body sketches!), and some crappy studies. also, two heads from imagination: a random girl and Ygritte from asoiaf. I dropped some colors on her, maybe i´ll try to paint it.
Hey, very good dedication : ) did you ever hear of bargue studies? If you focus on the human, you should consider doing some bargue studies. they help a looot : D
PontusEuxinus thank you! I did some research about Bargue studies and they look quite useful. I´ll try them
I´ve been doing lots of anatomy studies and drawing a ton from imagination, but I won´t be able to upload them until my scanner works again, because I refuse to take photos.
this time, something funny. I took a little portrait I did on febraury and painted over it, about 30 mins. I think it does look way better now. I´m improving!
this was the old one: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1328775600
maybe I´ll touch it up again in the future, but now I´m back to anatomy studies.
my scanner still doesn´t work T.T so I´ll just take photos. I feel weak, but looking at my sb people will think I haven´t done anything, so I´ll just post them later today. I´ll scan my favs when it works.
some work on two wips. both are from imagination, but I´m using a reference for the headphones (my own headphones)
I notice you always put down some kind of a background colour first, and work over top of it. Is there any particular method that goes into choosing what colour?
