Here it is. Definitely didn't go dark enough with it

Thanks a lot Sean, I liked painting that one. I was a lot more comfortable with his painting style than the Rembrandt. I did notice the hair was too sharp edged and I actually knocked it back some, but not enough. I have a lot to do next 3 days, so might not be able to get that third painting done til Monday, I'll try though.
This edge exercise is very very interesting. I'm only on the first one but I am enjoying it more than I thought I would (I hated it at first but now it's coming along better than expected).
Here is a wip. I couldn't see any guidelines as to how long to spend on each of the first ones (only 6 hours on the last), so I'm just gonna work on it tonight or until it's "finished" (which....is hard to determine).
I've already had a few "aha" thoughts while working on this one as to when I get an edge "right" and it pops in or out.
Values aren't perfect but working on that too as I progress.
My apoligiez for using a different uploader but the Conceptart one isn't working here at the moment.
Hi sean, im currently struggling to understand the difference between chroma and saturation...
From what i gathered, chroma is grey to pure colour,
saturation is white to pure colour???
its difficult! do u have any tips about it?
The study will be done soon, just had to do this design thing first.
yea v difficult, from what i gather,
chroma is the intensity of a color of a SURFACE,
saturation is the purity of colour of a wavelength of LIGHT.
this is complicated SHIT.
this is what i been working on otherwise all week, lemme know what u think.

The detail Deutsch put into his paintings is really amazing. The original must have taken months to complete. I wanted to post this painting of his with my study, really amazing and it kinda fits the theme of mentoring
yea james gurney looks awesome but im not paying for shit. whos this jason manley guy?
Honestly that david briggs website is really helping me, makes so much sense! is very complicated but shit, now i understand about how the shadows form and shit! terminators! they are logical!
Yea i am going to continue with greyscale for sure, still soldering through these value studies, which are FRICKING hard work btw, and then ill get onto edges which will be a whole nother mindfuck. Just saw this picture done on Asingularcreation website and i was like he painted that! that looks real, like photoreal. jesus. and the textures they use in brushes was how he did it so will get real into the edges section.
I flat out refuse to pay for knowledge that can be obtained for free lol I know im an asshole but life isnt fair.
Cool jason sounds like a standup guy.
I read a bit of the notebooks, without the illustrations i was quite lost though. very insightful into surely one of the greatest minds to bless the earth.
Yea im not sure about what u could do. I like that atm they are quite abstract and very difficult to get 100%. Maybe have different subject matter atm its all battle.
That video is straight ridic. amazing photomanipulations something i want to get into in the future... still he didnt paint it though lol :p
tell you what, possibly my fav artist eva; http://www.artofgregmartin.com/
check it out you will not be disappointed....
make sure you check out his art as well! its amazing.
yea im not arguing against it i love photomanip but i would argue that it is more accessible than painting directly from your mind. yea it is still amazing.
I feel like were here.
2 Years is too long! my power level will be maximum by this time.
anyways heres the study, didnt zoom in at all so up close its a bit dodge but the values should be near enough dead on. had a lot of difficulty with this one. Plus the whole monitor thing threw me but thats sorted now. still this value thing is slowly getting easier. Cant wait till im done with edges, and then the still lifes!
Edit: whoa its def not that dark on my cpu whats going on!.... O ITS COLOUR THEORY! Yellow background! makes greys appear darker, than light grey bg....
yep will do.
Done with chalk brush (added shape dynamics, texture, and scattering to brush settings). One more and then Frazetta's Death Dealer
WHOA. That is excellent! really impressionistic. can u post these next to the original so we can compare them?
Thanks a lot Care Here is the painting side by side with original
Thanks Sean, you're right, I noticed that I have stayed kinda mid range with all my painting observations so far, need to work on pushing darker darks and lighter highlights
Im still working on anatomy and the figure no doubt, i was wondering after these studies and some still life studies, could i get some advice about environments. Their basically what im aiming to do for the majority of my portfolio and i have very little idea how to do thumbnails and how to bring them up to a very polished level. especially from the mind! Thats kinda what i wanna do.

quick question? how come in greyscale there are yellows in the high key and greens in the low key, and browns in the high key?
nah dont worry i used the color picker only ONCE since i started and that was to check something. but honestly maybe its my eyes maybe im going CRAZY....
its just light grey seems to blend into yellow creamish before it goes white, and dark grey seems to blend into green before it goes black...
nah i stick to the 0 saturation quadrant. i stick it on the red color. yea it could be the computer i dunno, im getting the values right anyways so dont worry
Light key is coming up, going a lot faster than some of the other studies!
so i thought id post these figures for feedback, all done from the minds eye
yea i usually do, i just had the urge so started and i was really happy with the results, even though im sure the shadow is off in some areas (im thinking the upper back) but yea loomis is really helpful! the pic looks very concepty!
when u say contour drawing what do you mean? do you mean like just looking at the screen or the object when you draw, because thats how i learnt to draw, thats how i draw fulll stop.
IF you mean drawing the contour lines to show 3d form then im with you yea ill give that a go i think its in loomis somewhere. still working through its a mammoth book!
Wow that is excellent! good job BB
maybe this will be of some help:
1.) Highlights arent bright enough
2.) Boobs are the most important part of any drawing. Her nipple mite need a bit of readjustment.
3.)The edges are a little off the hand and the lower arm. The bicep is great! I think personally you need a lot more hard edges.
Still great job!
heres a work in progress about 3.5 hours in.
Hi ! I'm working hard to improve and I'm looking for advices and critics on my work, so I think I'm going to come often on this thread
Here is my last photoshop study, this was the first time that I detailed really a study on photoshop... I only used the basic brushes (I heard in the videos of "FengZhu Design" that it was the best way to start...)
Thank you for your help ! And See you soon
Oh yes I'll do those studies!
Actually I'm not yet in an art school, I'm working again one year to pay it and to wait my brother (he's 17), we will attend the Emile Cohl Art school in France for year 2013/2014 ^^ so I work drawing the most I can to improve myself; I want to give the best of myself to become a professional concept artist =)
Thank you for this class!
that is incredible detail on that shoe! GREAT and i mean outstanding job on the shoe.
Cheers sean yea i know now what u mean
about 8 hours in.... had to zoom in for the figures.
Hi sean, yea i tried but didnt like it, doing it this way felt more natural for whatever reason. Going from dark to light was easy, easier than i thought it would be, im getting better at detecting different values! However i do tend to get tired when doing this... it is a hard task. anyways im about 12hours in. will post up some results at some point.
yea it does kill your sense of value when youve been there for like 8 hours, and theres so much.... your eyes get tired. Can i finish this one accurately first. Ill move on to the others and do them quick after i promise. its just i already spent so long on it i want to do it rite . just two more figures and the tree and im done. anyways this one hour limit will definetly help.
