Unfinished, but time is up, so here's my final:
Closed and poll posted!
A special mention has to go out this week to CLOSED! You have probably noticed his image isn't in the poll and sadly it's just because his file wasn't named correctly and it didn't include the relevant information in the image itself. It pains me not to include him but it goes back to an issue that was raised a few challenges ago with Black Volgan. All I can say is that Closed has performed above and beyond this week. I would love to bend the rules to put him in the poll, but that would undermine everything I have said previously. So my heart goes out to you Blake, you're beyond awesome, but rules be rules and I hope you understand.
DON'T VOTE! The wonderful world of conceptart.org is playing up again and the thread didn't update. It's now saying there are two pages but not letting me view them. If you can see this, I am trying to fix the problem and will have the amended poll up asap!
EDIT: Ok the poll has been reset. Please could you cast your votes again if you had already voted... thank you

Was one of those that voted too early, and can't vote again I think - but ~ that's fine. (if you want I can send my picks if you can edit them in, but if you can't that's becomes even easier ~)
Rinibee - i think one of the entries is posted twice in the poll.

There is such great work here, I can't wait for the next one.
Great stuff this round guys! Would've loved to participate, but this week's Cow topic got me all excited so didn't really work on anything here.
Voted for the following:
Mr.Gadbury: Awsome stuff as always! I can def picture this guy running at you in a game, only real complaint I have is that I think there should be a bit more lighting on your character to show him better.
dan liimatta: Def my favourite entry this round! I can almost get a bit of a storyline from your piece the way it is organized. It's always cool to see people throw in some extra characters in the painting, it shows how creative they can be.
Caleb-Brown: I'm getting a tank girl vibe here. Very cool design. And a neat composition with the background. The rendering on her skin needs a bit mire work, but it's a strong entry! Good job!
Artfix: Really cool scene, it really gives that post-apocalyptic vibe.
AND an honorable mention goes to closed, whether you made the poll or not your a winner in my mind, great thumbnail sketches dude! Some really creative character concepts! I can picture these guys being the random characters you (the main character) appraoch for upgrades and power-ups and whatnot. The little symbols that went with them were a nice touch as well.

Verehin--also voted for yours however the dog is just too well kept, I'd say a fiercer and more twisted creature would have suited the topic.
This was an awesome challenge, with lots of great and very inspiring works
Mr.Gadbury, loved yours from its very beginning. The raw and brutish appearence of your marauder is fantastic and i think its exellently rendered. Also your overall atmosphere and mood is fantastic!!
dragon4lunch, i love scorpions, so i definitely love your guy too You have a very unique design and i really would like to see this guy in action, must be quite funny to see him running with his 4 legs.
Artfix, thats a great piece. Love the mood and your choice of color. It really shows the hopelessness and desolation of this future world.
Lucassie, i think you had a very nice idea, but its about characterdesign, so i would love to see a bit more of them. Also i think your final piece is quite dark. For me it often helps to start an image in greyscale to set the values right without being distracted by colorchoices too early. Keep rocking and show us a bit more of your character the next time
closed, dont know what to say...i just love your style. This looseness and sketchyness and still so lively and with so much suggested details, awesome!!! And mate, name your file properly the next time!!!!! Its a real shame you re not in the poll because of such a mistake!
Narko, you did a great job on this one and i really like that design. My only little crit would be that it feels more like a priest than a marauder...but you already named him the priest, so i think you know what i mean
Verehin, fantastic stuff!!! I love that vicious appearance of your marauder. Everything suits it just perfectly, the design, the colors the mood...great job
RWhyte, i like that rough style in your piece and your colors really sell the atmosphere.
Rassy, great design! I especially love that mask of your character.
Caleb-Brown, you did a fantastic job on this one and i really dig that style!! I just think her skin looks a bit too intact for a nuclear-contaminated surrounding, but nevertheless, fantastic job
xinranliu, think you have something very cool going on there, the colors are awesome and i really dig your style!!
Smolin, loved yours from its early beginning!! I love that idea and i think its a very unique design!! Definitely one of my favorites
vertebra, this is a very nice design of a wasteland marauder, but my favorite part of it is definitely the slightly mutated dog
Whiskey Sour, very nice piece. I love the way you worked out the deformed skin of your guy, great job on that!!
Kalumis, this is funny, somehow she is very cute and adorable, but on the other side she has something really scary. Only i miss a bit this marauder-feeling, but great job
Emokun, i definitely love your choice of colors, they suit your piece very well and create a nice mood!
Tokoldi, very nice design! My only thought was that it reminds me a bit more of a fantasy guy than someone set in the future of our own world, but thats only my minor thought
dan liimatta, this is a truly delicious piece!!! Great style, great design, all those tiny details, everything goes just perfectly together. Very inspiring!!
Metafix, really like that rough style, i am just wondering a bit how she sees through this helmet
maeganite, haha, this is a really funny guy, i am just wondering how he watches his TV. Think it must be frustrating if all your mates always having fun watching your stomach and you are the only one who cant see anything
Juki, nice design, i like the way you made his arms, definitely my favorite part of the image, and that white dog with this way too long tail of course. Hes great!!
Jamesbiff, great job! You have a very nice mood and color scheme going on there.
Mistermike, your image turned out very cool. Great characterdesign and this desolated/hopeless overall feeling suits it perfectly.
ikuru, i adore this painterly style, that looks awesome.
JoshBuzzee, hahaha, this guy is fantastic. I am a great fan of cartoony stuff like that and i think you really made a fantastic job, great design, nice colors, nice linework!!
Hellfire, awesome work! There is nothing on that image i dont like, think you made a really great job!!
creaxjz, i think you have a really nice and promissing start there!! But it looks a bit unfinished to me.
Ros1, this guy is just fantastic, great colors, great style and that pose is just terrible awesomeness
So...hope i did not forgett anybody, and please excuse my sometimes terrible english...
Hopefully I kept myself in bounds - so many so its hard to keep them all balanced - so just a small disclaimer if I get too critical as I like all the pieces it; as an example I could probably write on and on about all the errors and flaws in my piece for pages - don't take it too seriously.
Very nice, a strange/funny thing is that he looks so sad & afraid if you look to the eyes - might be that one pixel/pupil that make him look sadly to the side as if he can't dare to look at the viewer.
Interesting and free design - most wouldn't dare I think, strange that he also feels a bit sad with the front leg so limp and with that owen mitt - I like. It would be fun to see a walkcycle ~
I find it a bit too rough in general, hard to read and would have loved to see some more things fleshed out - like you did with the hood/mask/face as I like that part as it gives me more information to it - a bit like the undershirt as well. While the bags and general clothing could almost have been described as well with in text. & The mood and idea is nice.
I like the lineart, perhaps save teh gun which I find weird almost unreadable - but I think you should try to find your way a bit more with colours and values for the painting part as the main image is almost unreadable for me save the highlights in the faces of the two. Idea wise I don't feel the Marauder vibe at all, no sense of
Love the ideas, love your contribution in the WIP thread & the random bouts of confusion you inject as I try to interpret your words - too bad about the name of the file.
I really like the first 3, the guy sitting on the shoulders of the gigant and the girls on wheels (sexy) ~ good ideas and fun to look at and to imagine running around in a world of your creation (save that you might need an editor for the dialogue, as do I but ~ )
Well thought out and planned, my main problem is I think that I don't feel the Marauder topic over him so much, he might lead marauders into battle (as the crowd looks more rowdy) ~
The light direction is also a bit confusion - A sun in the sky behind the preacher and yet the light is from behind the camera if you look at the scene - also a bit jumpy as the platau seems to have light coming from the right, while many other surfaces have it coming from the front/right instead.
Overall though I like the ideas used and the props you have added.
Voted for this and its probably my favorite of the bunch so I love a lot of things about this: for one it really feels close to the topic at hand without being in my face about it - it reminds me a lot of the hyena pet series from Africa (Lagos?)
the guy is posing for the camera while the animal is what it is - makes it feel very alive and real to me (someone suggested a more crazed/wild dog but it would have tarnished this sense of reality for me) I also really like the render and how it makes it feel even more like if someone went out to photograph a real marauder deep into the wastelands.
EDIT: Hell it even got the bird in the background (the lagos image )
I can see the effort and I like that & the mood - I also like what can see in the design. The pose feels a bit strange and forced, especially the left to the left (her right) - and the hat feels malplaced. Nice sky and background. She also feels a bit unlike a raider, but ~
I really like thed the rough and I think you made it a bit too silly with the pinkish eyes in the finished version, but I like the upperbody and calm "give me your money" pose he got. The background and the character doesn't really attach to each other in the final however and it might be mostly because the feet/shoes and the ground don't add up well (I would have spent more time there). Still I like.
I really like this one, save perhaps how flat the gasmask looks on the chest and that who ever painted the radiation sign did it on the side of the centre (we can blame that on her I guess) - the rest is really nice - love the design, the attitude and readability and style. Also I'm weak for women like this ~
I also voted on her (but my vote is gone so its why I mention it instead).
I like the fishes ~
I like the design of the armour and weapon - and the guy actually - the pose is fine but it makes him look more like a zen-monk to me rather than someone that spends his time roving and rading in search of plunder.
I feel so sad for this guy, so disfigured and sad - also he probably needed a full biological suit and not just the gasmasks - those arms ~
I like the ideas and render, perhaps the pityfull state and the amount of gear makes me feel refugee/scavanger/victim more than marauder, but most people don't look, nor need to, exactly look the part - he does however feel like someone that would fit in the environment, if one can actually survive all that ~ and I like it, save that I feel the need to listen to some blues as I watch it now.
Wonderful props - love the tesla lance, his pauldrons/arm-plates and the tires - not sure about the helmet, but in the egyptian protests/riots they used bread to protect their heads, so ~
Feels a bit too soft edgewise and too monochrome but parts like the boots works really well.
I like, even if I feel that the dog takes over in the image - but it feels like a solid survivour of the war - the perspective feels weird - esp. with the dog - but dunno - and I would have liked to see more focus on the chap - as I like the ideas but they don't go much further (boils/scars are nice, but would have been cool to see more of the texture and details of it, but I'm perhaps weak for disfigured skin).
feels more like a post-apoc western, but save that I like the body of the main guy, but I think both heads feel a bit weak and in the case of the dog very flat. Doesn't feel too much like a marauder either, more like the neihbour gone zombie.
I really like the first sketch, and someone noted that it feels more supernatural than post-apoc and I would agree, but I would have really loved this first to have been pushed more into the pseudo reality of the post-apoc universe (in where things can be unreal as long as they are described as if they could be real) - this one would feel better in a more fantasy oriented enviornment - doesn't really feel like a marauder either, but I like the line work and the design in themselves.
I really like this one, from the skin texture, the design, the bow and arrows - the sense of anger and force he exalts all while illustrating the dangers of the world (I imagine the thing in his hand to be some sort of instrument to messure toxicity/water or the like, or maybe just a map, either way it makes it feel like the world isn't pleasant and nice). Voted for this one (one out of 3)
Feels very Steampunk and not very post-apoc, nor do I sense anything marauder like about him, even less so when I read the description - but I like the character and work otherwise.
dan liimatta ~~
Meh, didn't really finish - I updated it a bit after and it can be found here .
There are several issues, but also several things I like - the marauder part feels a bit estranged for one, while she doesn't look nice and kind and indeed someone who would punch you out and do more for the fun of it I kept the marauder topic very loose to the image it self ~ over all I kind of like it though, even as I worked on it which was a surprise, and it was the first ChoW I "completed" even if I was in a challange 2-3 years ago (with a half-done piece).
I like, but it doesn't feel very post-apoc nor like a marauder, could have been a futuristic explorer of any artic region. Save that "issue" I like the design and render of the cloth. not certain about the beak-like helmet, but ~
Did you ever consider why he has a light/tv in the stomach btw? any sort of reason, or was it just random? just interested, but anyway the light is a bit strange - could perhaps have tried to keep it simpler, but I like the cloth shape in it self - but I would jave looked more on the light.
I like the design and idea, perhaps he doesn't feel like someone that would rove around, pillage and loot, well he actually does feel like a looter ~ Anyway the double shadow of the dog to the left is strange, as are the perspective and envo light - but the guy kind of works, especially the arms.
Feels very sci-fi fallout (due to the bipboy) - nor so much like a marauder, probably due to posture (as if he is this calm neat guy who is just about to sink into meditation or a pool of sadness (perhaps he just did some raid and have a pang of consience to root out his guilt). Also feels a bit alien environment weise, not so much like earth somehow - also hard to read any designs from it, but I like the piece it self.
Nice to see a 2nd homage to the anti-vehicle rifle, feels a lot more sound in the waste than automation and burst ~ I like the design in general, perhaps she feels more like a wandered than a raider of sorts - but still its nice (also maybe the cat makes her feel nicer than would benefit the topic) - also you should look at the values you use, especially on the road - and perhaps try to use more hard edged brushes - overall I like it though.
I like upperbody and head - the baggy pants not so much - feels like a post-apoc marauder as well, and I really like the backpack and glasses and how sparse you allowed him to be. Nice character - does feel like you didn't have time to finish the lower half though.
Oh that arm
wtf was my first reaction, and I still ponder what actually happened there ~ save that reaction I kind of like the piece, yet it feels a bit too fantastic with the floating hair and too sparse with only the one pouldron and pants, like a homage to post-apoc without going there to face the grit of it all.
Wonderful work, perhaps the piece with Verehin that I feel is closest to the topic of the marauder - I really like the posture and feel of it, even if I prefered the version with only one gun - akimboing it makes it feel a bit less real and gritty, even if I really liked the guns in themselves.Love the stomach, head and arms. (would have voted for it but can't as I lost my votes in the reset).
Could just as well been fantasy - and its a bit hard to read much into it save that you are looking at a scaly mutant with a bad back (retired marauder perhaps?).
Too bad you didn't make it in, and this is a true cRPG post-apoc character with enough loot to build his own little town - love the gear but the clothes are a bit undreadable save the nice spoky shoes and glove - also his stare makes me wonder how much there is left within, but heh for a WIP its really delicious and if that backpack and staff is any inclination of the where this would have gone if you had the time then

Thanks, not certain about creativity in this case, I think its just as much about brute force and boredom (or sit long enough before a piece and you start to hallucinate and add things at random, but I also just throw in stuff early on without much regard for anything - words from tracks I listen to or what ever.
Its always a pleasure to draw/paint strong women ~ so was bound to have something ~ ~ and
Thanks - I need to spend more time on pieces in general as its truly a pleasure to just keep adding - still have a ton planned for this piece but not enough time

Hope this is not controversial, but I'm a bit puzzled how my scorpion mutant is doing in the polls compared to Caleb-Brown and Hellfire. They are well rendered (the hand of the girl not so much, but the face is great). And it's not just generic pretty girl and buff guy with guns who are doing well: JoshBuzee has a cartoony interpretation with icky oozing wounds. 17 votes right now.
I've participated in many CHOWs and I realize I have a hard time guessing how certain pieces will do at the polls. Of course I realize I probably should give up already on getting one of these stars, I was expecting better results.
Your opinions are welcome.

Dragon4Lunch: I carry an ice-pack for my ego during the vote. It hurts!
To your post, I don't think the three you mention were stunningly original, but all were very clearly defined and readable characters, executed with a great degree of skill & finesse. I'd also like to say that JoshBuzzee's "cartoony" piece has a style and exaggeration that I find really impressive. With a cartoon, one can't hide behind vagueness or suggestion, and every mark has to perform. It's every bit as valid as a meticulous 3D render or a painterly atmospheric piece.
Personally, I arbitrarily restricted myself to 5 votes this week -- which means I didn't vote for a lot of things that I thought were excellent. I voted for what I liked best from a selection of excellent pieces. I'm sure a lot of people did the same.
This is my first ChoW save a failed half-done kettle-witch from some years back (Chow 147 :: Baba Yaga) - and while I also did a sexygirl here (albeit not only sexy given the pus and such) ~ I think a large part of it is readability - at least for me.
So this is from a newb.
& in a sense I didn't vote in this one (I did in the one before the reset, but can't vote now) but my three were as follow...
1. Verehin: My favorite with only the one hand and partly gun being negatives for me (prefer it over my own and would have liked to see it before mine). It's also doing fine. Very readable and clean and what I would want in a concept if I had to modell/texture it - and with a render I really enjoy all while being creative and inventful (nice clothing and general design).
2. Emokun: Felt like a post-apoc marauder and I'm weak for sick skin (and strong women making mine hardly surprising). This one isn't doing as well - and I wish I could have added my vote to it.
3.Caleb-Brown: simply because I liked the character, the fishes and it was very readable save that I felt the gasmask was weird/flat. Not as creative but I felt it was solid.
I might have voted for Hellfire as well, or instead of Caleb-Brown - and again for the readability and clearness.
I might be a tard for this, or just not value the same as things as you - and as I wrote I think your piece was very free and daring, as in creative - and if I had valued that over functionality and readability I would probably have placed you among the three. In part I think it is because while I've always been rather creative and "artistic" even managing to scare potential employers away due to it (as in they explained to me that I was too arty and weird). This did effect me and I've grown to like and love something else than what I once did - and almost disregard what is different. Well not totally, but I might at least value it less than I should.
& for readability and function I felt that yours lacked a bit - even if I love parts of yours like the textile over the shoulder, or rather the torso and the arm to the right (his left) - but the legs felt slightly unbalanced and the head feels hard to read, especially if I were to model it or send it to someone that would.
Was it a clear cut line? No - I do like your piece and for the creative and strange you won (with Closed perhaps, but he wasn't in the vote).
Not certain if that helps or confuses you ~ but that's my thoughts on the matter, but I'm a virgin here and can only speak for the vote I lay that was expunged by being too early.
EDIT: As for JoshBuzee - my personal opinion on that opposed to yours is that I would have placed my vote on yours before his simply because there was more information and detail in yours and I'm also weak for that - and while I liked both it would be the decider for me here (and not the style it self)
NOTE: I'm actually trying to do well-formed/ideal characters as that is what my portfolio really needs, so that was the reason I did mine as I did - and that I like twisted weird skin and claws. Thus in part that's also what I'm looking for in others, and would upvote before I think, also why I really like Verehins I think. (Also I like iggy pop and there is a resemblance around the pectoralis region)

Hey Smolin and dan, I very much appreciate the response. I especially thank you dan, for such a detailed response and I think you're right - the head, weird as it is, I should have given it more clarity and I can see how the asymmetric leg-situation can be problematic. I think the smaller version of the piece doesn't read as strongly as the full version and many people, I'm guessing, simply vote on the small ones at the top.
Verehin and dan liimatta's are my favorites here. They are both superbly rendered, clear and would make some seriously scary and intense characters in such a world.
I've been trying to reach a more productive concept art level, not spending 2 full days on a character design, but if I put less than that in, I usually don't get far in the polls (but I usually don't make the top 3 anyway).
my homepage: http://www.trickstertoys.com
Thanks so so so so so much for the crits!
I'm only 17 ( but i'll be 18 in 4 days! ) and this is my first CHOW (and i've only been on conceptart for a month) so all the support or even acknowledgement is really appreciated
Dan Liimatta: I couldn't agree with you more on your critique. If you look at my WIPs i started off with her staring directly at the viewer so that's why the gas mask is flat (and actually i would say all of the details on her torso are kind of wonky and inconsistent with perspective). I was really hoping to fix it but then i ran out of time. Also, i completely agree on the gas mask being boring but i had a hard time coming up with ideas to make it more original while still making it readable. I'd really like some advice on how you might have done it if you have the time
Mhugo: Thanks! I think i should have made it more gritty in general, i started to add some dirt but i was doing so many last minute edits that i kept painting over it. But i definitely agree. Also all i could think of was adding dirt specks and scratches, so i was wondering if you could give me some advice on other ways to make her look more contaminated. I would really appreciate it.
Rob Powell: Oh wow it totally does look like tank girl O_O. Can't believe i didn't notice that.
Yeah, i used to over render everything and it kind of killed my images in the past so i've been working really hard to let go and simplify my work ever since i read this thing on John Singer Sargent's painting process, so i'm glad someone noticed... not that it's a good thing that it's too simple but it's still a validation of my recent efforts
Dragon4Lunch Actually I am pleased that you bring this up because I'm sure many of us feel the same way. None of us want to be controversial tho hehe. I feel this way every week because I put a lot of effort into a strong composition and narrative, but no one cares about those things. It really bugs me. Ok, applying ice pack now.
As for your character, I think the design is brilliant. The legs are SUPPOSED to be imbalanced. His head is SUPPOSED to be bizarre-looking. I don't think its hard to read at all.
In the end, I guess we should do what we want to do which improves us and our portfolio. I don't think my loose painterly style is going to go over well here at ALL--people love their squeeky rendering--but its what I like. I think paintings should look like paintings. So I will bring my ice pack. Good work, see ya in the Queen of Saren room
Thanks for the critique dan liimatta
You're absolutely right about how he doesn't fit with the background. I think I just got a bit lazy when I got down to his feet.
I'm happy you liked both my words and my piece ~ and dunno about time, I've seen people spend a long time on one character concept professionally so ~ (
talking weeks and not days). I spent 4 days on this one as I started Thursday, a bit mellow like, and then pushed more time into it during the weekend.
Damn - I started painting at 26-27 (had of-course done a bit before but we are talking about doodling and when needed an occasional thing as I was pondering if I should or not) ~ I wish I had been at your level at 28 ~ (and only going from this piece).
& the solution? If you saw it for yourself then just more time - I do that shit all the time as I edit the character and find old parts skewed and problematic - parts of the jaw here was still "errorous" in this final piece as I forgot to go over them from changing the face earlier. Same with the jeans as I changed that but never had the time to fix them before the deadline (partly did after it - as you can see in the WIP thread or here).
Artfix Just my own thoughts on it again:
I care about such things, that was why I placed some time on it for my own piece and commented on it for works like yours - but I placed more value into a clear character concept and less on atmosphere and composition; I would even be less likely to vote on something that got an excellent composition for the piece but that detracts from the character and its design. That was why I decided to move off the hands from the body from the WIP to the finished piece as I felt the hand would hide too much of the stomach and detract from the character concept (but not from the scene/feeling).
& I've already given my feelings on all the pieces and those stand.
heh, I kind of do the same most of the time - probably because of it I'm worsening the problem by not allowing my skill with feet follow the rest of the body so that once I have to do them I get so frustrated trying to find the balance of the character all while making certain the technical aspects like perspective/foreshortening works, all while the feet should still look good and convey the right posture to the character ~ they are getting even worse than hands for me ~ making me even less interested in doing them (I do though, just a pain and not a pleasure).

Smileface Thanks for the kind words =)
Mhugo Thanks, and yes, I figured she would be able to see since she has room, but there's a lot of shadow under there which obscures her eyes. I guess irl people would actually have a great deal of difficulty being able to see! xD I got attached to the idea I guess. And here I thought I'd learned to let go of that!
dan liimatta Thanks for the crits =) I admit I was struggling with it, I had more detail planned at first but I got a comment that the big padded and furry attire didn't call for much detail and tidbits so I left it that way. Plus, I was trying to stay away from the standard "oh my gosh all my clothes are ripped and worn" post-apocalyptic type of thing. I guess something like that and still keeping it marauder-like and making clear that they've just come out of a disaster makes it very hard. Something to keep in mind for next time!
Apart from that, really inspiring round. I'm always amazed what kinds of things the participants come up with, I'm looking forward to seeing the results in this week and in upcoming ones!
