Ok, had to delete that post because I can't figure out how to delete attachments.
Finishing up two classes at Gnomon for the fall. I can say my perspective knowledge has increased to a significant extent already from the one class. The other class was figure drawing, and to be honest wasn't very useful in terms of feedback; we came to class, drew from the model, the instructor might say a brief comment on your drawing, then class ends. My drawings improved (they're all traditional so gotta find a fucking scanner to scan these drawings!) though.
Here's some heads. First some heads I drew about a week ago or so:

Then the heads I drew all day today. The heads are ordered from top to bottom, top being the ones I drew earlier in the day, the bottom right being the most recent one.
I can't believe I spent all day drawing those. Fuck it, I'll just draw more tomorrow.
I can agree with "fantasyart". You have to draw a lot more figures from life and learn how to "see". From what I can see in your figure sketches you stop drawing where you don't know how it really looks like ( like the feet etc.). you can see that you stopped drawing at some points, because you didn't know how to proceed. Also you should always draw everything of the body almost at the same time. You have to build something like a slight shade. (sorry my bad english, I hope you know what I mean)You need to work on proportions and a better understanding of how the figure is put togheter

You are right about those drawings and they weren't from life. I do have lots of life drawing done recently though; I've taken figure drawing sessions in the past and right now I am in the process of finishing up a figure drawing class at Gnomon. The class is great and is giving me lots of life drawing experience. There's another class nearby that is starting up in January, so I'm going to try to take that as well.
The thing is, with figure drawing, you only have so much time to draw before the model changes the pose, so I aim for the whole gesture first and foremost instead of focusing on the details. I'd love to have a model pose all day for me to get it right but... that's kinda how it is.
So I agree, that's what I'm trying to do, the drawings I am doing in that class do attempt to address what you're talking about.
I need to scan them in though next time I'm at the school.
Anyway, I spent about 9 hours working on these. I'm burned out right now and need to take a break, lol.
Slow and steady, dedicated practice.
I have no idea if I'm practicing 'efficiently' or not, so any pointers on what to focus on per day (like 'x amount of heads, x gesture drawings/etc') would be cool.
But yeah, I jump on any opportunity to draw from a model that I can.
Lots of people say to go to public places too, and I've done that a few times. Mostly it's only good for gestural drawing too; I can't really capture too much as the person moves, but I guess that's the point of it all.
Anyway, this is how I spent my day practicing:
I seem to be having trouble figuring out what angle to place the features at. I am drawing these heads on a perspective grid and so try to plot them out on the correct receding angles.

Love the head studies! Keep it up, study the heck out of those heads--also study the forms of the body a bit. You're pretty off on anatomy, but if you keep plugging the studies, you'll get up there quickly!
Yes I feel the same. I like to draw people on the train. When I want to draw detailed I choose the one sleeping or reading. I think it's all about understanding how things are connected and how to "see" and actually let your hands tranfer everything you see onto the paper. I guess you are on the right way. As long as you draw to understand things and not only draw it the way you think it is, it doesnt matter what exactly you are drawing.

Hi.I am a first time commenter. I'd suggest more exercise in drawing through. Google Vilppu since he is a great classical figure drawer is mostly concerned with how you conceptualize what you see. The poster who said you must learn to see is pretty right on. When you think of the "head shape" Remember there is a side not seen by the viewer, but this side will help infinitely to the one drawing if used as a tool for placement of landmarks (nose, eyes, ct).

A little walkcycle I worked on a few nights ago.
I like your head studies. They are pretty solid and you have a nice aesthetic. I struggle with the same question about how to figure out what angle to put things at. Everyone has slightly different angles so part of the answer will lie in what you want it to look like. I like your animation.

I need to do like a freaking million of real value studies of just the planes like Chris Legaspi teaches. I need to make more bold blocks of value in my strokes, that's a habit I need to develop.
Still figuring out how to construct them but it's making more sense.

my only critiques would be on your body proportions in your fantasy characters. exaggerating motion lines is good for character, but i see some Escher girls creepin in your sketchbook lookout for those pesky too-thin waists and baloon boobs!

I spent a couple hours working on these. Maybe I'm focusing too much on single drawings instead of doing many at a time. I don't know if there's a better way of practicing this.
I feel like I should be producing far more with the time I'm spending practicing. What's better here, quality or quantity?
Getting a little more knowledge of the construction and rhythms and learning more. Even though I don't think the drawings are that pleasant looking.

Today's work, would have posted more but I ended up hitting a couple roadblocks in a row with the other drawings. Happens sometimes. Photo refs are starting to piss me off with all their mental trickery, photoshopped bullshit and general mindfuckness. I'm going to try self portraits next. That will probably help me with the things I keep messing up with the photo refs.

Going to stick to the grid for awhile until the shapes, forms and proportions of the eyesocket are drilled into my muscle memory. The brow ridge is starting to make a little bit more sense.
