Thread: Arri-att's scethcbook[VOL2]
May 22nd, 2010 #1
I've been away for long trip of sadness of daily routine and hard duties of architecture study.
Since my last scetchbook is old and highly unoptimised i decided to relaunch a new one.(link for the oldone http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...light=arri-att)

Like your color use, studies look good, keep it up

papervampire thanks. I guess the reason studies are better then scetches is because i am obligated to draw certain amount of hours per week for studies. And with scetches on the other hand i am more lazy and quick
Here is more studies from the last year(Those in update are more recent). Their subject are really common pieces of sculpture well known in the sphere of art, and three drawings of the man who was posing in our class

I really dig those marker-colored pieces, along with the studies and the lamp. Please, show us more!

Here is a brief look on how i usually invent characters. There are two basic way - from imagination and observation. As for imagination way i start drawing things subconsciousnessly and at some point when there is already some stuff going on on the sheet an idea comes what it is.
More interesting process takes place when you observate. For example, i was watching video of "God of war3" designers speaking about creation of the Chimera beast. While i was watching i thought - "It is quite neat adaptation of ancient myth and some details are perfect. Union of three different animals is nice also". And then:" Why to mix just animals and not take for example other myths instead". That's how the concept below was born. I thought about Medusa, Minotaur and Nemean lion. It became a modern renovation of old myth. A beautiful woman is cursed by the gods themselves for her astonishing beauty, but she is not just simple Gorgon. They mix her gentle and kind personality with fierce nature of the lion and her gorgerous body with minotaur's head and lion's parts.
There are lots of details which are not simpleminded but well thought and i start with simple and fast scetch in charbook(on your right). It is not far good and i am not satisfied yet, but the idea is solidified. Next i do more complex scetch. You can see many details like crymarks beneath her eyes or how she hold on a flower with her lion paws, or how her breasts are violently pulled into different directions by the Minotaur head. She doesn't wear top clothing, because minotaur start chewing the clothes. Her hair is mixed with snakes which bite her periodically(but she is not able to turn anybody to stone). More importantly she is not evil in any kind, but she has hunger caused by all curses upon her head, and she is really sad and tired from living like that, which makes her more 3dimentional character. Her beauty is emphasised with furry-like cuteness. And the conception of empasising beauty with horror i learned from reading Will Murai interview
Even her name is well thought. First i say "Other chimera" stating ressemblense. "Other chimera" transforms into "Otherch" and then into more female "Otherachi"
PS. Do i need to mark scetchbook with nudity marker if it is not prime theme of my blog?

I like your creatures, it’s nice having some insight on how you came up with them.
Your studies are really nice also. Keep it up

Really interesting sketchbooks so far! Your 3D work is fantastic - love the lantern. Your pencil studies are also really beautiful - I'd suggest trying to crank out a load of quicker studies as well if you aren't already. Great work.

PurplePlatypus i can do more insights if you want. last ones were from drawing without a direction. But when i will do something with lots of background? i will surely write it down. Thanks/
Wilko hmm i don't enjoy pencil really much. MArker stuff was done without a single scratch of pencil. Also pastels are quite neat for largescale works. Thanks for your feedback. Still i have to finish some works tomorrow to get my overall mark in drawing class for the whole semestrum.
