the character dude is looking really cool! The bottom ones- maybe it might be easier and efficient to paint shapes around areas and not lines? good stufff!
nice! that pencil is absolutely disgusting, in a good way.
for the female portraits it looks like you have a habit of giving them very strong jawlines. It's not a problem at all, just something to be aware of for future reference. They all have very slim chins on the end of a jaw that widens out to be quite broad. I know they are only 10 minutes each so maybe I'm being overly critical. I'm impressed you managed any of those in 10 minutes frankly. Have you watched ZhangLu and Manley's tutorial on drawing female portraits?
anyway, glad you are back to posting and bring on the portraits!
Argh awesome lines man!Love ur latest character concepts!Maybe train some more rendering and skin tones!Keep it up love ur work!
Rodrigo Yeh man definitely. I REALLY have to start off with some drawing to pick out my placement, since its really bad, and I have a habit of continuing to use line a bit. I think I did better this time focusing on shapes.
Tom Thanks as always man, appreciate it. Good advice! Its all that time spent drawing dudes and practicing classic anatomy, its all strong facial planes etc. Time to work it out
I wish I could afford to get that video/lecture Im sure it would be reeeealllllyyyy awesome for what Im doing right now.
Cameli Cheers man! Rendering is exactly what I need to and am working on! hopefully it get better
Sorry for the delay, INFACT i just noticed its been 4 days, I thought it was less than that, sorrreeeeee. But its because when Im not doing dissertation, Im doing my little NDA project, so sorry. Still feeling under the weather and under productive.
Early night and some hard work/hard play tomorrow me thinks! YEAH!
Just some quick portraits. Simplyfying forms and shapes into smaller amounts of tones, but I still find Im not paying attention to tones. I just paint the darkest and lightest and just seem to pick all the ones in the middle kind of randomly, which leads to some areas where they cross. But the whole round brush and simple shapes was making these better for good people/women looking etc etc etc
andddyyy~ thx for dropping by and yay for the environment painting on the last page really dig the character you drew in post #630-- i think you should go over it digitally and fully render it out ^^ it would be awesome (when u have the time that is!) good luck with uni stuff !
Great stuff here! Very inspiring! And you classmate's blog is great, I wish I would have done that with my m8's in college! Keep up the hard work!
MY DAILY SKETCHES
If you can read this, I gave you 5 stars
Thhanks for the comments everyone. Appreciate it.
Teapo yeah man, I think Im gonna render a pencil up soon. I need to learn to render, especially from pencils. need to find a good process. Thanks!
Calader Come back anytime you want, Ill be here waiting for you
Thanks a lot dude, really appreciate the comments.
Dark_eyes Thanks a lot man, and glad you like the blog. Its a shame were all so busy to update it. Maybe Ill throw an update there soon. Cheers!
Kostas Cheers man, always appreciate your love!
Life drawing! Hooray. In the midst of my dissertation I got to do a whole day of life drawing, and it was a fun relaxing endevour. Obv the first piece isnt from life, teehee. I drew it over the breaks but I kinda liked it actually, just a little sumit sumit.
Its a shame I only realised that I should probably use my other portraits as reference as I do them, to get things better than the last. Here there was something going on with the space between his eyes and the way his eyes looked. I couldnt quite figure out what it was. So the way his eyes look a little funny is me trying to get that. They were just slightly out of alignment or something, but the pupils were still looking correctly etc. wierd. But interesting to draw.
Also, talking of life drawing. Everyone should go check DarkEyes sketchbook hes just started posting.
The guy is a genius at gestures. Its 5 stars already and deserves it.
Aaaand my lesser life drawings.
(must remember not to post life drawing masters... and then my own, next time)
Sweet figure gestures man, I'm sorry for the seemingly irrelevant question, but what format are those on? And yeah I agree DarkEyes's ones are awesome. I've been doing some with charcoal of my own lately...complete disaster/mess on A4 I strongly suspect I should rise my format a bit.
Hey calader, thanks a lot!
All them are done pretty big on A2 up on an easel so its quite big. Some of the portraits come out at being more A3 size since Im not using all the space and thats what I find natural for portraits, but the gestures are all crammed on to an A2 sheet. But its graphite, so you can do lots together quite cleanly.
Personal for me, gestures feel much better when you work bigger. You can get all that arm and shoulder movement into big strong and lines etc. but then dark eyes proves me wrong, apparently his are quite small!
Experimentation and then preference I guess.
Seriously nice figures dude, how long were each of those poses? There are loads so I'm assuming they were fairly quick. I like the gestures of them, when I'm just browsing the pages there is a lot of movement captured in them (very different from my own life drawings which are heavily static).
I have nothing really to crit at all for the figures - I would suggest some work on the hair of the portraits though. It is quite "scribbly" rather than suggestive of hair. A quick re-browse of some andrew loomis drawings would help im sure to get back into blocking in the masses of hair.
Oh, OH. That piece you did in the breaks is awesome - seriously impressed with that. Do you use a propelling pencil for those sketches? (not the portraits but everything else)
Thanks for the useful crit in my sketchbook too. I've recently taken to doing those quick sketches and I always leave the faces out without realising the pattern I have started doing
Some really awesome work in here! There is a great energy to your studies and really digging your landscape digital paintings.
andy this stumbled into my life this morning:
I've read it all now (doesn't take long) and thought it might be your sort of thing
such a nice flow in your lines and your digital painting has quite the lovley atmosphere around them
l'll be keeping my eyes open for more
Ok so that last link was alright, but then I discovered this anime: Samurai Champloo. Ever seen it? If not its by the same people who did Cowboy Bebop (also great). Definitely investigate!
Oh geees. Thats alot post for someone isnt posting regurly enough!
But AH HA! Ive finished my dissertation. Im doing some printing/binding and handing it in on Friday. Which means I have to start project work again in full force.
Ive been doing some other stuff, but its under NDA feels wierd having stuff I cant show. I might ask though see if I can.
Comments! Love em!
Rod! Thanks man, compliments on the figure from you are doubly appreciated!
Lyno Yeh Im still struggling to find a way I like to render. I feel like I dont have time to work in a much more careful manner and I like a little looseness to it - but its definitely killing it, need to work on it. Thanks man.
ramina Thanks buddy!
Tom Interestingly enough, I saw samurai shamploo and wasnt that impressed really. I liked what they did well - but it got a bit boring, I dont think I can watch just fighting/action anymore. Unless its absolutely absurd (see Tengen Toppen Gurren Laggann).
Gestures are about 2 minutes, and hair - see above - Im too keen to be loose and gestural with rendering, but I cant do it well. Needs to be more informed. thanks for the crit.
And yes, mech-pencil for the break drawing. Thanks for the encouragement and crits, cheers mate.
Wilko Cheers man!
Kostas hehe, thanks man, but you dont need em! Your already awesome
Snatti Thanks! Appreciate it.
Dile Awesome, feels good to inspire someone. Normally your inspiring me tonnes! Thanks.
Sourgasm Thanks man! If Coro said it - it must be right!!
Onwards and upwards!!!
blahblah - some random characters. Then a piece I,m thinking of taking up full colour. Practice painting big scenes etc in good time. Maybe do a lot of rendering. Well see.
Its on a google sketchup model/picture I made. Gave me some cool perspective by messing with the field of view.
In the last picture the hat on the guy on the right dosent look like its sitting quite right, asthough theres a gap between the forhead and the hat rim if you see what I mean. Great stuff though keep it up!

Thats great mate!!!Lovely extreme perspective and beautiful detail!!!Love the characters and the great variety. These are skills mate, keep up the great work!!!
Thanks for the great comments guys, and yeah I fucked up the hat a little bit. I need to get into the habit of correcting my mistakes more, I think I roll with the punches on too much stuff. Gotta think more.
Quick quick quick, Im posting from Uni!
Life drawing for an hour this afternoon:
Edit- second pic was on shitty suger paper - sorry for how bad it looks, stupid stuff is pretty much brown not white.
Thanks very much socks, appreciate the compliments: big time!
Ive got a lot to think about atm, just some doodling from this morning.
I know I wanna work on some more enviro stuff but Ive got to get a quick project done before assessment, so Im gonna do a character one.
Being soooooo slack lately, really need to push myself.
Dissertation is now handed in, time to go go go go! Lots to do in the next 3 months :0
Hopefully will have some stuff for later on today.
now THAT is a sweeet update. Love the style and your influences are so obvious in there, but not in a "I'm ripping them off" way. Great stuff.
brilliant sci-fi enviroments 2-3 pages back! you have an incredbiel ability to paint interesting urban landscapes
and the latest pencil sketches are looking great as well..i like to see you color some more of your characters, or place them in these amazing enviros, otherwise, nothing to say, but keep em coming!
