Wow, thanks everybody! No time for comments as I've gotta get back to work, just putting up some images from photobucket, hadn't updated in here in a while.
@mike: Its a super sculpey base with greenstuff, 2 part kneadatite epoxy over the top.

do you establish the basic values and colors, and then just zoom way in for the rest of the painting process? this is looking so detailed dude. really really great stuff your doing lately!
Thanks guys! @Nicky, yeah pretty much, general to specific, establishing shape and form and tonal pattern, then the values within those forms and then at the very end I go in on a separate layer with all the details etc... then I just wash the color in with a few color and overlay layers for saturation and value shifts here and there. I end up painting opaquely on top of that for final edits and polishes but thats about it. I'll try and upload a step by step on this next robot once its finished. I don't zoom in too much, maybe 40-50%, the .psd's look real sloppy at full size.
Alright, started today on the basic shapes and block in of the asteroid miners robot since I had a bit of free time in between client feedback. Basically playing around with all the big shapes and a bit of detail on its own layer to keep me interested through the process, most of this gets edited out as I move along though and get closer to a finished design. Gotta add all the barrels and probably just repaint his mining lazers, any thoughts on that or other crits would be awesome as he comes along, thanks!

I like your designs a lot. i see your influence from organic shapes.
If you want crits the only three things i can think of are: for the shadows i would spend more time mapping how they will be cast on the ground below. I think this will strengthen the composition and help the forms feel grounded. For me the way it is right now is a bit arbitrary. I think if you are unsure about the placement of the shadow then you could try composing the shapes inside of solid shapes/color Scot Robertson style. The perspective of the two figures throws me off. I think its clear that your are focusing on the design in this piece instead of trying to convince the viewer of realistic perspective. And thats ok. perhaps my eyes are overly sensitive about that. I would like to see you make the smaller character just a silhouette or something that downplay's its design if your main purpose is just to put the new robot into perspective.
lastly. i would suggest playing more with the overall silhouette. i would like to see more play with composing the shapes in more interesting ways. On the forms i notice how there is a bit of flatness on the character's face. And i think that if you start figuring out how to use variety of edges on the exterior of the figure you can get those forms to feel more spatial.

Heh ! Hi. Very nice SB, with strange creatures, half-fleshy and half-mechanical, and some dream-like landscapes with floating geometric shapes. This is very mysterious ; I like mystery.

Loving the work in here. You've got a good intuitive design sense, and your illustrations are incredibly fun to look at.
I think, however, that it would be of great use to develop more rigorous methods for construction during the early segments of the illustration. For instance, I'm noticing some perspectival incongruities in a few of your paintings. In the case of the mecha, you've got two conflicting points of perspective. These problems can be effectively eliminated by establishing the type of perspective you're using, and then the dynamics of that perspective.
I was in this habit all the time, and I did it because I was wrestling with my innate desire to design, and then my innate desire to make my drawing look dynamic. The problem is that part of the illustration is designed, and then other part is dynamic. When you establish a perspective, you've got to stick with it. How you develop the form relative to the perspective is going to play an important role in how your character/vehicle/ect settles in the space. Aryeh made the excellent point that cast shadows are instrumental in grounding your character, but this sense of being in the space will be systematically reinforced by letting the forms conform to the established perspective.
