BRINKMAN!:You always give such good advice! Thanks!
OK, I made it all the way through the book today. About pushing down too hard, try not holding the pencil like they showed you how to write and instead hold it like you might a drumstick under your hand with the back of your hand upward. You can still draw that way but it will probably encourage you to draw with your whole arm (and that will help with the wobbly wrist thing too).
About life, you will probably grow to hate your day job and so fine art can serve as a really great release in your off hours. You don't exactly need an art degree to do art, though. I am happy you have the creativity and drive never to want to rest in the typical thing drawn over and over again.
About the chalky look and values, maybe you can get something out of Prometheus|ANJ's Speculars and radiosity thread that will help you make convincing differences between drawn wood, flesh, plastic, metal etc. in how the values and edges are presented. (stickied in Fine Art Studies and Discovery)
Don't give up. You have to mess around a little while in digital to figure out which program is right for you. Because you are using the freebie painter essentials disk I figure you have a Windows or Mac type machine and therefore can run SketchUp. Go to Google and grab that for free and do a couple of the tutorials. You might really take to it because of your experience in real world 3D.
All right. Enough blabbing. Best of luck.

Granny, salamanders are awesome!!!!
Arttorney, I can tell that you are talking from experience. It's so nice that you took the time to look through my whole sketchbook, thank you!! I think another contributing factor to my heavy-handedness is that I am left handed and curl my wrist. I've really been working on that though! Thanks for the links!!!!!
Started another robot today, I'll put more pictures of it in my welding thread. It's so nice to be friends with the machine manufacturing teacher, you get to use their practice bits!
Awesome doodles, as always. Without Physics when will you have time to life draw? Love your zombie friend, the new painting and I can't wait to see my pic!!!
NicG: I hope so!!! And I'm working on it!!!!
Grannyyyyyyyyy: There will be maor on SATUUURRRRRDDDDAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!!!
J.S. Sabastian's liver
I don't know what this is
And Snootchy here's some of those pics. I also got some neat industrial ones on that trip, but I'll post those later.
Hey, I enjoyed looking at your sketchbook! You have a great sense for facial expressions, I think. The pencils are nice and your digital stuff is improving -- it's nice to see some more contrast in your later digital paintings. Keep with it, there's some good stuff here!
Haha, Gogojojo! Love the Japenese teacher sketches!!
NicG: Yay! glad you like them!
Black Spot: No...not until after the midterm, I want a good grade.
Spent most of the day doing a study group at PSU (in between dodging the geenpeace people on campus, they won't let you go!) and then a tutoring session at my friends apartment. At one point I was left all by my lonesome for more than half an hour. It was then I realized that the pneumatics in my chair must be leaking.
I'm gonna try to do SOMETHING on my computer tonight.
One more thing: TOLD YOU I COULD DO IT!!!!!
I enjoyed your pencils sketches mostly, hopefully one day your digital painting skills will catch up. It's just a matter of getting used to photoshop and that tablet. It sure took me awhile also. If you need any help feel free to ask me, I'll try to share whatever limited knowledge I know with you.
Granny-I reeeaaallyy don't like the way it turned out!!! Thanks for visiting!!
Alm0st- Yeah. With only about a month and a half on this thing and little knowledge of colors, I still have a long way to go. Not giving up though! And thanks for the offer!
He's kinda turning into a soldier robot so I'm gonna give a blaster. Maybe I should give him more arms, so he can hold like 4 guns at once.
I forgot to say, this is Sylvia, I used to have a class with her.
woh you the bestee, thanks soo much again for the ship refs! they look massive and really gives me more insight into how massive those bastards are hehe. really dig your metal shop work, that last one reminds me of a western gunslinger in that stance but in like a steampunk era!
Gogojojo, don't be silly, I love my pic. You're awesome!!!! You know, I almost never get covered in blood like that .
I like the one you've started of sylvia too. Hope you finish it!!!
Instead of working from a black bg, try something around 50% grey. Black really distorts, just like how pure white would distort your value sense. Also give blocking colors without pen pressure on, then gradually work from those midtones to lights/darks. Hope that helps a bit.
heya, great zombie sketch and it's nice to see you thinking about the backdrop or environment the character sits in as well, keep up the loose lines!!
I wish i was taught with hand puppets.
Dammn Betsy!! So many updates since I was here last. The socks rocked. The zombie hitcher has an awesome expression and I love the colours. Really looking forward to seeing how your welded robot turns out. Just make sure you keep the All Spark away from it!! LOL!! I won't leave it so long next time.......promise!!
Put a heavy nappy on the robot and call it modern art.
Can you be maths too long? I enjoyed calculus and would do extra work for fun. That might be about the time I was officially sectioned.
hey Thank you for posting in my sketchbook. If you some time check back youll see that I have been away for some time, had a lot with school. Just wanted to check in and tell you that I was very glad about your post and I also want to say that you are very talented. I would love to see more from you! Even more fun that yoy use a lot of charcoal which I prefer to draw with. Take care and be sure to drop by some time. cheers keep it up, your great!
Cheers/ your friend PMB

Pencil and brush is my choice of weapons!
You have the best sense of humor in your art. Zombie hitchhiker is awesome (sometimes I want to say ROCKS but I feel like I'm stealing Granny's catchphrase).
