quick and awesome work there wiggers and poshspice o_o
i'm thinking on going for a question/spirit/phantom reporter kind of guy, but decided to post what i have for the moment. having trouble with the pleades of the suit
Awesome doodles posh.
Little update on my previous sketch...
"Art cannot be modern, art is eternal." Egon Schiele.
@Muscari : quick note, i've noticed the poses in this and your last chow, but i think you should try some dynamic poses and really push your costuming for the characters. Look at a bunch of superheroes and era style clothing and draw out every idea that comes to mind, even if you think it looks stupid try it out take pictures of yourself in different poses too
oh yeah, decided to do some quick coloring, and the guy ended looking like a mix between space ghost and waldo
My first try at CHOW (I'm pretty new to this site as well). I'll have to get back to my regular gig tomorrow, but I hope to have more WiPs toward the end of the week.
My hero is called The Gold Standard. My concept for him loosely follows what the 30's were all about for America: The Great Depression and the New Deal. I'd like to tie his motives into today's economic issues as well somehow so, depending on where he stands, he just may end up as an anti-hero.
Anyway, it was fun to mess around with. Hope you like!
Edit 1: A little WiP. I'm trying to keep a desaturated sepia palette to sort of harken back to that era. The belt is a squat version of the alchemical symbol for gold.

Hangar One - OOOh that's a killer concept I'm diggin' them boots
So we have to design our own hero/villian. So no redesign of a excisting one like Batman right?
Sounds cool, hope I can come up with a sketch asap.
This will be my first contest entry on this forum, hope I'll do everything allright and according the rules
See ya soon!
Sketchbook coming soon =D
...and don't forget to check the Teen Challenge
Awesome work so far, everyone!
I'm pretty busy with school work, but this topic is too hard to ignore!
Anyway, my character is kind of like an undercover police who love women haha! He plays the billiard when he's free and he loves checking himself out in the mirror. Any c & c is welcome!
Poshspice - I agree, Mesmer is my fav too. Great ideas, although as you say some a weak they definately have potential.
Hangar1- Really strong pose, welcome to CA!
Muscari - yeah I like the pose, I think his hips and thighs are a bit too wide for a male. he looks really like he's tryna hypnotise.
Wiggers- Great man, looking forward to more progress. ALthough I'm missing the dynamic pose of your other sketch.
Dwintbop- I like the design elements your thinking about.
Seferian- great idea! Push more of the soviet, constuctivism design in the clothes too I rekon.
ImaGEEnation- I rekon he needs a hat gee
Nikola- haha very comical
Keeviin- interesting idea
dashinvaine- man that does looks old style
Powleyman- haha the stop sign, made me laugh
Ok here's my initial stage
A wartime super-heroine heavily influenced by Amelia Earhart and probably Glen Angus
Think I might push for more of a costume. Maybe some art deco elements.
Also I think she should maybe have 2 mg42s, one in each hand.
O.K. I don't really have a clue. But I would really like to use this as an opportunity to practice sketching the female figure. My figure drawing in general is seriously lacking and chicks in particular I only draw as fairy princesses for my little girls to color. So I looked up 1930's comics on google and was inspired by this from an old FLASH GORDON comic. http://arflovers.com/Blog/images/08_...sh_gordon1.jpg
Here is the sketch I came up with. Basically some tacky drapery and simple repeated shapes. Simple head gear "I did add some cool Goggles!". Gave her a short cape and boots and gloves to complete the stereo typical super-hero attire. I think I am going to call her "The Oval Thrower" Anyway. The main point here is to work on my figure drawing skill so I will probably spend most of my time doing more sketches of her in different poses. This first one is kind of a generic super-hero stance. I may put on a wig and take some reference shots of myself for final posing. I may not post those
Any crits / pointers, even basic stuff like how to draw breasts, hands, figures in general will be accepted with complete humility.
I love the '30s and '40s Golden Age... I can't wait to see the products in this weeks ChOW...
And very nice designs POSHSPICE...
LONG LIVE YOKO KANNO!!!
shoot I love all of the sketches so far... seriously i could go through and rave about every one (especially the WWII themed ones... love it), but i don't have time now. can't wait to jump in here with you guys with some sketches.
Sweet sketches guys!
Here's mine, still blocking it in. You get the idea
Although most people are going for a 'military feel' for this (including myself), there's no specific requirement for that. Batman was a detective as were The Shadow etc. They were crimefighters first. They got drafted later!
This challenge is turning out more difficult than I would've thought! At first, every time I thought about a new super hero costume, something that's already done before came to mind. Then once I started drawing, I figured that face, body type, and hair should also look very 1930s -1940s.
This is my take on the challenge. I tried to make the character very bubbly and smiley, ala pin-ups from that era. I was mostly inspired by the first Silk Spectre from the Watchmen movie.
I still have to work on her body and costume a bit more. Make her arms a little more muscular and flesh out her costume. I'm not quite sure about her shoulder pads. Should I take them off and rather put on some flashy gloves/bracers?
I'm also not sure yet whether she should be floating or standing. I suppose I'll figure that out once I take a crack at the background ( I'm really bad at backgrounds!)
Alright, I'm gonna try the Chow for this week. This is the idea I had, not as cool as the other concepts (what's more terrifying then a flying Nazi?), but I hope it will do.
If you are worried about doing something that has been done before then trust me when I say doing something that has been done before is itself a concept that has been done before.
While I was googling around in thirties and forties heroes I found a guy who could shrink but retain the strength of a full sized man (predates The Atom); a guy that could shoot energy beams out of his eyes and wore goggles to protect other people from accidental zapping (predates Cyclops); the energy beam guy could also manipulate electromagnetic fields (predates Magneto); and a bullet headed guy who flew around penetrating things (although he had a bullet-headed girlfriend rather than a sidekick named "Fire Me Boy").
here's mine, still need to add a mask and work on the rest
all crits welcome
wiggers is too fast at painting lol xD
here's mine; i call her Miss. Tery. She's a foxy thief
