Really cool sketches!
wilkerson-Thanks so much man! I will keep working it!
radu-jm-Thanks! i am glad you liked it.
Here is another update on the Glacier park painting. I have moved it into some cool north light and the colors are TOTALLY different! Anyway - more crits would be nice.
So cool watching this develop Ken. I wish I could help with crits but Ive said wow to every version. Im useless to you but Im entertained by you. I win.
jigje- Thanks man, you are my biggest fan!
I really appreciate the support!
I will make sure to keep you entertained, my friend!
Here is an update on my team chow character.
Changed up his pose. Crits please.
Also a compilation of sketchbook pages.
Updated team chow knight. Also a little re-paint on my old elite soldier armor sketch.
I hope you dont mind but i did some manipulation to ur picture. I find the legs too short. I tweak some of the perspective and angle. Not sure if I made it worse or not but hope my changes make sense.
Similarly, i find the legs of your second guy too short too.

Sketchbook - Less Update !!
My Art Blog
A fellow Oregonian , thanks for the kind words.
I like what you have going on in here. You're glacier park painting is cool. I'd be curious to see what you think of it when flipped horizontally, like I did below. Just a thought.
Mydrako-Thanks for noticing that. I tweaked the legs and torso length in this update. not as much as you did. More subtle I guess. I seem to make legs too short!! good to know!
Valve- Viva la Oregon. I love this state. Such a beautiful and varied environment.
I really like flipping my canvases, or using a mirror to check the drawing. I havent had a chance to work on the Glacier park one, but I will be making some drawing changes and shifting colors a bit. Thanks for that advice!
Few, I havent been on here in a while. Sorry for the lack of updates. I have been working on artz. We started a long figure study, and cast painting as school. Still trying to get those proportions while also trying to keep myself from making things look pretty too soon. I did a 6 hour cast study today also. I will post this stuff later when I have photos.
I just have another quick update on the team chow stuff.
C+C would be VERY nice as these are due soon!
That kight still looks kind of short-legged imho. like the mountain painting btw.
Thanks Walnut! I will keep after the legs. I am glad you like the mountains-that one needs to be as good as I can get it...
More posts later today!
Well, all of those promises of posting were all lies. I never took photos of the stuff from school. Tomorrow I will through! I have school so all I have to do is bring my Camera.
Team CHOW II is a few hours from finishing. It was a long wild month. I will be skipping out the CHOW next month because my commissions and other painting need more attention. Here are my finals for the chow.
Also I posted my revised tonal paint over for my Ballerina painting. The drawing I did before was shit. So I am going to be working more systematically from now on. This painting should start to roll along pretty fast after this. I am going to transfer this photo onto my canvas today and then the fun will begin!
Nice work, man. I'm really interested in your school too. Subscribed.
evandempsey-Thanks man! I am glad you like it. This school is a top notch education-I highly recommend it. Its cheap too
ariel_medel-The ballerina is actually a photo I have been changing in photoshop to get the right tonal scale. The face is pretty much the same as the photo. Glad you like it though- it will be a painting soon!
On to other things. Studies from school. The cast painting and the figure are WIP C+C please!!
Smells like progress and learning in here.
I really have nothing useful to add as you are doing all the right things... Just keep pushing.. keep studying dont get comfortable I guess.
Rather nitpicky.. Some of your value transitions on that last cast drawing are rather abrupt. If you look closer next time you should notice that the core shadow doesnt just terminate right into the light there is a transitional tone.
Also your pencil stroke could use a little more discipline as you are creating secondary tones in some areas where you dont really want to when its getting a bit sloppy
Kenny_Callicutt- Thanks for stopping by! Sorry you had to endure that reek of progress! haha! I agree with you fully. Usually I just add more tone in the end. I am not supposed to. So I dont work on it too much-I will keep the half tones in mind! Also-my pencil skill is definitely still too messy. I am trying to not get comfortable. Thats always been a problem of mine...
JailHouseRock2- Thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate it-I Love your Sketchbook! I am still a supern00b at the digital work, I really felt it doing the CHOW stuff. I want to do it again sometime soon though! Thanks for the comments man!
I started an 18 hour cast drawing today. I am a little intimated but I have high hopes for it. Just trying to stick to a process and make the baby steps forward.
Here is a quick speedy from tonight.
I have been trying to play Call of Duty 4 but my SHITTY internet is causing me to lag out. Clearwire is the WORST internet on the face of the planet. Gah! Anyway- I have been painting instead. I guess thats better.
Another speed paint. Just a little .38 cal pistol round resting on my wacom tablet...
Marian Rowling-Thank you! I will try to keep doing some speed paints. I have some traditional painting to work on, but I will get some speedies in for sure! Thanks for stopping by!
Ok, so we just finished that long drawing of the strong guy. He was a great model. It was great to finally have some good form. I got too caught up in it-as usual. Still working the proportions.
and my two hour start on my 18 hour cast drawing
and the WIP of the cast painting. Finished the day moving the head around. Its a little too wide right now. Fixed next week. Still have 12 hours left on it!
AND the WIP ballerina. FINALLY put on the canvas accurately. My original charcoal drawing was SO Fucked. I still have so much practice to do. Very humbling. This painting needs to be done by next month. Fun fun FUN!
Really impressed with your studies.
You are really hitting the important basics that will stay with you forever; Big shapes, mannequin idea, nice.
The longer charcoals already have that balance of value that reads well.
Nice page of block in hands.
AztcFireFlower- Thank you for stopping by my book! The school really is working to put the foundations back in my head. The ones that should have been there 8 years ago! We focus mostly on proportions, I hope to get more focused in value next semester. We'll see. Thanks again for the feedback. I really appreciate it.
Here are some old drawings I thought I would post. Sorry for it being such a huge post. I just want people to see them These are from my trip to Europe last summer. Its embarrassing to see all of the failed straight lines I was trying to come up with. Im glad I have improved a little!
that building actually was leaning pretty bad.
This building was also leaning :p
I havent posted in 10 whole days. Feels like forever. Its kind of a pain to keep updating sometimes. Anyway-I am here now with an update.
Things at school are going great. This is the last week of the summer semester. I will post the finished cast and last figure drawing on thursday. Stay tuned.
Here are some gesture drawings from the book, and some other random crap. Nothing too much going on. Oh, and a nearly finished Glacier Park painting. I need some feedback on it.
Here is the WIP ballerina painting. Its pretty crap thus far. Things are reading well together. I will be working on this a lot more once school is out.
C+C are greatly appreciated!
Another quick update. I am still playing with the digital- seeing how it works. Here is a quick speed paint and a hover ship thing I painted over. Also a few more pencil sketches of more hover ships.
fun fun fun.
I worked more on the Ballerina tonight but nothing worth posting. Everything is generally filled in now-so for the next two weeks I will be tweaking things and making it really nice.
For tonight I tried some industrial design. I just set up a perspective grid and tried to sculpt the car out of a rectangle. It failed horribly so I just made up a bunch of shit.
Here is a little speed paint I did over a photo I took from a recent hike.
Im off to school now!
Ok, so here we have a 12 or 15 hour figure drawing. Also a 24 hour cast painting. I dont know who the cast was of-but it was a pretty bland face that was really hard to capture. I'm glad to be done with these. Semester is over tomorrow and I am free for two whole weeks. I will be working on some cast stuff and the Ballerina. Stay tuned!
Here is my speedpaint for the night. I saw MatejaPetkovic's sketchbook and had to try my hand at the gritty old folk. I didnt get anywhere near what he has but it was fun. I just stole this photo off the net- I take no credit what so ever. Just some practice. Im off to bed now. I slept like shit last night.
LOL. Very nice SB. Checked it out from the front.
Your proportions and sense of form are pretty spot on. Don't know what to say, other than some of the older paintings you were doing looked like they could have used underpainting... but apparently you've done that with your Oregon park piece.
So yeah. Rock on. I'll stop back by occasionally
