I love old school Heavy Metal mags. And you can't have Heavy Metal without a voluptuous woman. I think the slug dudes would wear cloaks to lessen wear and tear on the suits, but I took the cloak off so you can see the "still-suit".

Well hopefully I can get back to regular daily DSGs, but here is one I am working on, I spent too much time inking it and thought I better post before it gets locked.

I loved Heavy Metal like no other magazine. I have almost all of them up until 2004 or so. In the last few years they've taken a severe quality dive-- I suspect that's because the artists aren't doing hallucinogenic drugs as much as they used to back in the glory days.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on ConceptArt.
Here's the initial sketch:
Diascope - nice sketchy work, I like it.
Sketchius - I like how wavy it all is, nice style to it.
silentbrain - I like those concept slugs. And the final product reminds me of Homeworld concept art, which I wish I could do. Where do you start and finish layer and brush-wise to accomplish that look?
well this was my only idea, so i ran with it. the initial concept was better on paper, but i dont have a scanner.
called slugheads because of their round helmets they were adept at desert combat, and were feared by even the bravest of crusadeing knights.
As far as my procedure goes, it's kind of random, but for this one...
I started with a grayscale painting on one layer, just blocking out silhouettes (blending) with the brush or lasso. This will sicken a lot of people, but I use Magic Wand to cut out each object onto it's own layer (ie, all heads layer, all coats layer, etc) then use the hue/saturate adjustment to block in a color scheme. Then I'll lock transparency and start shading. A lot of the time I'll use a layer set to "Hard Light" blending mode to add things like bounce light. (Hard Light acts kinda like Color Dodge and Color Burn put together, but it's not as strong as either) After that I may tweak and add details.
The thinking is that, by splitting off each part of a picture into its own thing, it makes things easier or at least less daunting. You only have to think about one aspect of the picture at the time. Sounds good, but in actual practice it's not perfect...it's fairly inorganic and slightly OCD...but I like it.
In terms of brushes, I don't have anything really unusual. I made a honeycomb-ish brush and some comb brushes, but mostly I use the stock brushes with different settings. My main brush is a rectangle with pen tilt on and pressure set to size, and I use the number keys to change opacity.
A lot of it is practice though. I'm not great, but I notice myself "remembering" more and more things like how to render something that looks sorta like chrome, or "shorthand" strokes that are sloppy but manage to convey the impression of something like folds on a shirt. (and it's about time...at 28, I'm starting to look a little long in the tooth)
