I am an upstart Marketing/Concept Development professional and I would like to find a comic book artist(s) to come aboard on an indepedent project but I am unsure of how to proceed. I don't want to offend any artists by soliciting their talents without offering compensation outside of profit sharing and co-owning the copyright.
I thought of an overall concept and a screenwriter came on board to develop the story, however we need someone willing to do the illustrations/color/ink,etc. Basically create the look of characters. Is this feasible? Is it foolish or offensive? Any insight would be appreciated. Even if just to tell me forget about it. Regardless of the feedback I receive, I wish everyone the best.
The following is an ad I posted on Craigslist:
Characters need Character
Who We Are: A Fledging Writer and Marketing Professional
Seeking: Illustrators (illustrators, background artists, colorist, letterers, inkers) with a flair for creating comic book characters, who are interested in contributing to a new independent comic book title currently in development.
About the project: The characters and story are in development (and under continuous revision) however the physical look of the characters has not been determined. The design of the characters will be primarily at the discretion of the artist(s) with some input from the writer and co-developer (Marketing Professional). The story centers around vigilantes with no "special" powers beyond superior fighting skills.
Compensation: There is NO set compensation for anyone involved with the project. The success of the title will result in PROFIT SHARING. The main illustrator(s) who create the physical look of the characters will share in the copyright ownership of the project and the proceeds from the sales of the title (which will be independent).
This project is for budding artists with an entrepreneurial spirit. It provides the opportunity to showcase your artistic ability and become a member of a project from inception. Even though the concept is in place, it will be your project as much as it is ours. It will be a learn as you go experience as well. As it stands now, 8 issues are in development, target date for release of the first issue is Spring 2010.
E-mail if interested. Please provide examples of work when e-mailing us. Individuals that we are interested in will receive a copy of the summary of the project to gauge your interest in coming aboard. Feel free to ask ANY questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.
Best of luck in all you do and promoting your talents!
