Scott the Blob here
Aww man, there really are some special pieces in here already.. I love the cow
And hi CCThrom, good to see you here boss!
I decided to stick with my last sketch/paint beasty.. here's the progress so far.
Thanks MJ, I like that one best to. Now to see if I can "hellyfy" it more.
Very nice Benu, its interesting to see the ocean as hell compared to the mostly land based ideas in this thread.
For my own submission I'm debating if I like skull sitting in its chest, thinking about replacing it with a goats skull or possible just removing it. Also considering shortening the legs to make the creature look more apelike and suggesting that while it can sit upright it moves on all fours.
Here i go:
Benu: It works so much better with the new colors. A dark abyss but with scattered light from the eternal fires pouring through the water. Nice, fresh and original.
Blobs: That looks huge! Loose and confident strokes again. I really need to learn that.
Joey-B: I prefered the rhino! But let's wait and see where you'll take this.
Morisse: I like the first one. A giant bug like thing from hell would be quite cool.
Darkwolf: Be sure to define the shapes a bit more. Right now it looks a bit like a Michelin mascotte shaven puppy. It could work though!
Kosmo975: Cool looking mammoth/bull! Smashing everything in it's destructive path.
Irish_Jim: I like the more classic medieval approach (multiple heads, lots of limbs). Make sure you do some highlights. Perhaps some intense specular highlights to make it slimey and moist? I'm not sure what the bone- like handle protrusions are on it's side. Perhaps that will be explained later?
MatthewAllen: I like it a lot. Looks massive and ugly. I prefer the darkness of the first colortest but it could work in bright daylight too.
Peanut Brittle: Looks evil so far. Can't wait to see more of it.
Pierropod: Awesome looking feet your beast has! I think it's head has a bit too much going on. A nose, a trunk, tusks, a big mouth filled with teeth. I'd leave some of it out...
Wackowski: The cathedral-ish tower on it's head is cool. I do hope no-one lives in there and that he or she does not have a lot of bookcases or likes to build cardhouses...
Mara644: wath out it won't look too humanoid. Apart from that, it's starting to look nice.
CCThrom: It looks cute! Hungry and cute. If you make it's eyes a bit smaller, it would help improve the "colossal" aspect I think.
Nexus: I don't see your creature as something from hell. It looks a almost like an alien incarnation of Buddha. Perhaps a background/setting wouldn't hurt your piece.
MArco Mazzoni: Incredible brushstrokes, colors and...well everything. Love the apocalyptic landscape too.
Samolo: Slap some colors on that sketch! Looks good!
VegasMike: Mmm lot's of huge horns and a dragon-like feel. No way this will look bad in the end. Nice sketches!
Fast Art: Your creature looks really original. Intimidatingly simple but cool shapes.
Buddha Bear: I'm not very fond of those very bright yellow teeth. Try to paint with thicker brushes instead of scribbly lines. Perhaps if color seems too hard to get right from the start, try in greyscales with just black and white as your colors. Later, you can give it as much color as you want on layers with different blending modes. It is perhaps not the best way or the fastest, but you will learn to concentrate more on shapes and values and less on color. Keep drawing!
Izer: Welcome! I think your creature has a bit too much different types of scales but overall, it is looking good.
dwinbotp: The blob meets Half Life Headcrabs! Looks good, like the dynamic perspective!
Joiton: Awesome idea you have going with those volcano sketches. Interesting!
Tipa: To me, it looks a bit too much like a faun mixed with a centaur. It could work but it has to look way more evil. Try to desaturate some of those colors and work on colordepth!
MoHog: Add those spikes!
David79: Very cool thumbnails. I like them all!
Althael: Your image has a lot going on. The creature's head is a bit cluttered with almost random shapes. Too bad so much of the creature is hidden by the cave wall. Perhaps you could try and concentrate on the creature alone and add a background later?
Cloister: Thumbs up! Evil!
Mr Wittman: A tad bit generic, but it's very sharp and demonic looking. Looking forward to the colors.
Wilko: I think a giant spider-like creature would look very awesome but don't add a human looking face or skull...it would ruin the image a bit and make it look tacky. But that, ofcourse, is just my opinion!
Kin: Nice sketch. Looks like a woodcut print! A creature with multiple heads is difficult too make it look credible but you certainly succeeded at that.
So, that's it for now. Sorry if there is some faulty (and repetitive) English in my post!
Bralt Hannicalt, read the headings for my posts. These are the steps for my process. The images there are not the final compositions nor even the final designs.
Well, I did actualy. I've no problem with the concept, the idea is really neat. I know these are all sketches, I'm just giving my two cents on what you shared with us so far (like everyone else). And to me, the colors nor the symmetrical look of what you have shown so far does not really convey the story of a giant furnace that burns souls to heat hell.
Duly noted. The symmetry is an unfortunate result of mirroring shapes to create the silhouette thumbs. That will be rectified in the final composition. The design is more of a color thumb at this point. The crit on the colors is valid. Trying to find some combination of colors that will stand out and contrast nicely with the fiery face and innards. In addition, I dont want the colors to be red/oranges. That's too easy. The most generic demons are always red and orange. So I have a bit of playing left to do with both design and color for this one. Thx.
I like the twisted array of body parts in yours by the by. I know it's finished but it feels soft around the edges. I would say maybe sharpen up some of the edges so that it separates a bit more from the background (try the Unsharp Mask first). Right now its a bit foggy. Which is of course somewhat what you were going for with the doom clouds and dusty plain. However it also has that strong hellish spotlight from above which is going to give you some stronger edges. In addition, you could let some of that light highlight his upper shoulders. I dont think they would be quite that dim since they arent obstructed by the head. Finally, maybe some specular lighting to add a little glisten to his gums and other slimier/slick parts of his body couldnt hurt. Hoped that helped some and sorry I didnt crit earlier.

I usually just sketch the weekly topics in my book and never post anything, but i really need to start becoming familiar with my painter program, so forgive me if i never make it all the way to the finals thread, but I am going to try to start participating in the wip/sketches thread until i become more confident and refined.
Also forgive me for not commenting on everyone individually. The good things i have noticed are a sense of largeness and evilness, some even have a degree of suffering, which works well. The bad things (not bad in a general sense, but more of as per my taste) some seem needlessly complex, as if to add things that require details not to add to the creatures presence, but to add to the amount of time spent on the render. But as I said, I like things clean and simple whenever possible, so I tend to go towards those designs whenever the topic doesnt specifically require dramatic complexity. Still I am always amazed by the talent and diversity displayed by all artists throughout these forums.
So I made a few quick thumbs last night and I had this idea that may not even be in the realms of "OK" for the finals thread because of the body not being in the actual image, I still couldnt resist making a bigger mock up of the idea for the fun of it. I hope even though its just a sketch, the idea translates well. Quick note, i do and did notice that the leg behind the head is not really matched up with it's foot.. thats because I moved the entire leg and foot from the original spot and never really settled on the spot its in now.
Thanks gang, see ya'round
My Giant Lava-drinking Hell Beast:
Thx Nexus, I agree with the remarks you made. Will try and touch up my image some more. This is addictive.
Joey-B: Nice beast! No crits except maybe for the riding-hut pointing too much towards our right direction. The creature turns to our left, but still I think the perspective on the “hut” could be better, and follow the creature more.
Bralt: Thanks! Your creature is starting to scare me! That’s what I lack in my own piece; a really evil, morbid and twisted look. The hell around it works well too. Next time Cow presents a hell-theme I will surely also paint Hell itself. Looks fun! The reaper character might make the pic a little less frightening, taking it more towards a He-Man-like universe than a truly frightening hell.
Peanut: Looks interesting, and evil!
Benu: The hellish look is coming very nicely. Very nightmarish. I like it! But then again, I almost always like your cows…
Blobs: Nice depth there. I’m excited about the final. (Are those blobs on shoulders? )
M. Morrise: Second one is fantastic! And that include the pov. I hope you go with that one, because I can’t wait to see the final. That big cattle-beast just licks those poor souls up like he was going for grass, or examining the poo of some other creature. Very nice sketch/sketches!
matthewAllen: Nice landscape and scene. I would personally go with a frightening sky (towards version 1). The tounge of the beast looks a little slack. Perhaps try some variations there?..
darkly: I think it looks fairly bad-ass! If you erase this dude, I’m truly curious to see what you might come up with. Anyway – nice sketching!
Mara644: I really like the arm-postures of your demon. A truly menacing and scary apparition.
I would love to see a bigger image of this one.
CCThrom: That’s a decisive-looking lump of bad-temper!
Marco Mazzoni: Still looking terrible – in a very good way!
Samolo: Looks interesting!

Rushing my entry
See? Photoshop can be your friend too.
Benu and Brent - Thanks muchly for the encouragement and advice guys, but I think I'm gonna have to go back to my sketchbook for now... I'll see if I can get anything decent in by saturday, but I think photoshop is currently beating the pants off me...
Michael jaecks - Re the deadline, we talking Saturday anytime before midnight? *grins, then makes puppy dog eyes*
Anyway, here's the latest WIP, followed by the previous two pathetic attempts...

Darkwolf: I plan on starting the poll Sunday morning-ish Central Standard Time, USA. I'm about six hours behind Europe, if that is of any help. I get up pretty early though, and people in the US might wake up to see the poll started.
But, I am also reasonably flexible and will monitor the last hours closely. If I get the sense that I am getting a lot of high quality, last minute stragglers from folks who spent a lot of time on their entries, they will get in. I'm more interested in people's best effort than I am in having a hair trigger deadline.
That said everyone should plan on a fairly timely poll from me each week. I won't be extending things for long periods of time.
Blobs, man that is awesome. reminds me of wall-E for some odd reason
Cloister thanks good crit, i noticed it, but i didnt really think it was that bad.. starting it up today.. looked at it.. damn thats awfull hehe

Who you gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes? - Chico Marx
this is ok sory my english very bad
destinyapocalypse: that has a lot of promise, but we really need to see the whole creature, not just the head.
Still though, you've got a good start.
update with color .. looking too stubby at the moment , I'm going to tweak the body soon.
Dang, Blobs... that's looking reeeally sweet... Uh, in a horrid, festering, nightmare-ish sort of way... Love the addition of the rim light!
Will hopefully get this cleaned up and start coloring by tonight
