I do have to say that I liked the look of the rougher stage of render in the WIP than the smooth finish, but that's just my opinion.

Been thinking alot about what to say on your works, since we already discuss it over chats.
First of all the CHOW entry looks damn cool, especially the ortho(that's what its called right?)
The edge transition is getting better, theres a better balance between hard and soft edges. like that, I guess studying Phil hale doesnt loosen up those strokes and edges.
I like that study a lot indeed.
And another thing I love about the update is the linework, its so loose and expressive, I have always told you to put more emphasis on the gesture and stress on freedom of line, and I can see you have stepped up. And I also like to attention you are giving to volume through lineweight.
Advice? I dunno about that but I think loosening up and going crazy too with the works would be something I want to see you do.
Just go crazy, just for a little while, then haul it back in.
Try it, its fun.
But other than that, just keep up that work man, you know you are heading in the right direction.

I think in your figures, some specific areas are less convincing. Especially around the joints where the muscles collect together, your line is specific but it doesn't look completely accurate. In the CHOW, there is a general sense of the muscles; but their start/end--especially the lower arm and abdomen--look uncertain and smudged over.
Maybe doing some anatomy studies alongside your gestures? I think that can help remedy more specific issues.
Love the updates. the ogre thing is cool, personal fave is the Phil Hale-ish b+w sketch.
I would prefer to see the ogre's full design, he feels a little off-balanced as i can't see his legs, and he feels a little boxed in the composition. but other than that i'm loving it. i need to do more figure drawing, thanks for inadvertently reminding me.

YihyoungLi, respectfully, I am going to have to disagree over some of the points. The lower arm and abdomen area of the CHOW looked smudged over because they were in shadow. But yes, I do need to practice more anatomy. It can really take my character work to the next level. Thanks for dropping by, I really appreciate it.

LtPlissken, hope you had a good Christmas half a year ago. Well yes, I am back pretty soon, but whether the guns are blazing is something you'll have to decide for yourself.
I had a ridiculous time between the last update and this one. Not only did I have to submit one term paper and attend a viva, but examinations extended for over a month. The ordeal consisted of not just end-semesters, but an entrance exam as well. The result is due in July, fingers crossed.
But even amidst all that, I found myself thinking about how I started this sketchbook. I realise it's been over four years since I began this thread, and apart from feeling peeved about the lack of progress that I've shamelessly made public over the course of these years, something else struck me as well. Why did I begin this sketchbook, anyway? I guess I wanted to have a corner in the internet, and the improvement that came with it made it a real bargain. But now it's become something I didn't think I could or would have recognised four years ago.
Right now this thread is like a gallery, where I display some of my works, and people comment on it. It could easily have been a system like the one provided by Deviantart, and it still would work fine. It's not something I dislike, mind you - as a matter of fact, it suits me just fine. But I just can't shake off the feeling that I'd really like this place to be like a chatbox. Something a forum system is supposed to promote, you know? Someone posts something, and people comment on it; it's like a conversation we can track in one single page. And I'd like my sketchbook to be that, a space for conversation.
Now I realise that that is impossible given the rate at which I update. If I update once every two months or so, then it's hardly plausible to have a conversation here (given the fact that I only post when I have artworks to show). So in that regard I have to step up my post count. I'll try to at least live up to posting once a week, if not twice. So that from my end, I can make this thread a viable place to talk to people.
What I'm trying to say is, that I'd love to have a more verbose conversation than, 'dig your works' - 'thanks for dropping by'. I feel like over the last four years, I've hardly come to know anybody on this forum. And that's weird, given that I've received - what? - a hundred odd comments at least on my sketchbook, and from people who have all signed up on a forum called 'conceptart'. Hell, talk about common interests. It's strange that the only times I've talked about art in this sketchbook with other people is when I thanked people for crits. I've never actually had a conversation with anyone here, not even about art! I don't know why that makes me sad.
Anyway, enough ranting for today. The first piece on my update is the one I entered for CHOW last week, and predictably enough, it did miserably in the competition. The next ones are the ortho sheet, and a quick sketch to show how he functions. The one after those is... well, a random pencil sketch. Then comes an ink scribbling, and finally a study from the penultimate episode of Castle season 4. It is a WIP, but I don't think I want to push it any further. I feel like I've already learned as much as I can from it.
Indeed, maybe you should update more frequently if you wish for conversations... I dunno, I thought it happens if you wish for it. I did it a few times in SBs Well, I always talk more than draw and I know a lot about beginner artist problems and I keep meeting people who have similar hard times like I have or had, or just say or do things I have an opinion about I like to talk with people too and I prefer SBs where there aren't just mere visitors who say a few things about the presented stuff but friend who chat a little Things becomes warmer and more motivating for me that way. I feel more like living, you know.
My opinion about your CHOW is too vague so I can't find the words I need... Hmmm... The body is too boring, anatomy, lighting, pose, it's too dull regarding all these, your sketches are all better IMO. I wonder why you choose it to be like that. For some reason, the face doesn't seem a real alive face to me, it's too masklike with those eyes. But I'm not sure such a crit have any chance to help you. I'm sorry, it's my best at the moment.

You have some nice stuff in here, good colors/render on that last one, although it does break of into black a bit to fast at the cheeks. Chow Idea seems solid enough, its chest seems a bit flat though. Don't beat yourself up, chow was a bit hard last round... Atleast idea wise, anyway thats why I didn't join.
Great stuff here. I love the beak man thingie. I could see that as a villain in a movie. As for the CHOW, I agree with shiNin. It would be a lot better actually if you just render out the sketch instead of making it so flat as in the painting. Head's a bit small in the painting as well, the hood should add to the volume.
The pencils are real nice, you should post more of those pencil characters

Nice rendering on the last character, but agree with the comments about it being a flat.
Personally, I make it a rule for myself that flat-on subjects and centered compositions are off limits, unless there's good reason for it.
I think this could work if you go all the way by actually centering the character on a wider canvas and display more background elements because it looks like he's in some kind of Gothic/mystic cathedral which would be cool to see.

Oh, what a beautiful spring morning this is, as the audience felt
the steam of your update power, among the cauliflower in the backyard
field. Swimming hat on, running shoes on, and you are ready to go. Four
years. Four years, I have been just reading from my lips just as I stood in
front of a mirror. That much time has passed since you started this sketchbook,
and as you can see you have blossomed big time, your art has blossomed,
reached a level beyond. I like this place also like a chatbox, I like to chat with
some people here, most of the time there are very smart and high quality
people here, and I am so proud and feeling right coming here day by day.
Posting once or twice a week is a horrifically great idea, and I totally support
it. You just do it, go for it, your fans, me among them, will surely appreciate
that act. Verbose conversations we will be doing on a regular basis beside
doing our favorite drawings and paintings. Oh, how euphoric I am once again.
The first caped teeth gritting person is really spooky and freaky. I can see
him being resurrected in an old monastery. That is a monastery window
behind him, right? I like the steps how you rotated him in space, almost
did a 3D stuff there, and I can see it from his expression that he is also
surprised how he's been rotated so hard in such a short time.
A random design is interesting, and I like how he is hiding his face, he
is sensible, and it's month June, a hard mosquito time, he cannot take those
strong stings to his cheeks. The last guy is one of the Baldwin brothers I can
see that from his eyes. You see, what a coincidence, a man can go famous
in such a sudden fashion, something you would never expect before. The
youngest Baldwin as a kid was hijacking garbage containers for a living
and suddenly he skyrocketed his career. That same things can happen to us also,
we just have to be consistent. They said that a messiah story is just a silly joke,
but I am starting to believe more and more. You got the power.
