This was easily one of the best demos ive ever seen. I must have watched it over and over. A key thing it taught me personally was how to not get soo anal with anatomy. Kind of ironic I know, but again as I said in JChans post, he shows off the all encompassing importance of studies. I mean Marko would block in the gesture and pose in about 5 minutes maybe even sooner.
I learned some very valuble lessons from this DVD. It was totally worth the money. Thanks again to all who were involved
Yeah the DVD answers pretty much every single question you could want to know about his process of design and drawing.
Documentry was totally inspiring and the music over the whole thing was perfect.
Only problem I had was the compression of the video was giving off some aliasing at the menus and such.
The part that I found most helpful was when he talks about putting time into a piece and not rushing it.
i had a personal and a BIG creative crisis during the last couple of years..everytime i`d decide to pick a pencil and a sheet of paper, the result would be always the same: frustration and anger for not being able to create anything but junk and shallow stuff..the thing i enjoywd the most doing my entire llife was slowly fading.
then i saw the trailer..and i bought the dvd..
i was completely blown away not that much by the skills of marko (though i think he`s something completely new and mind-blowing in terms of art) but by his words..
"the on life" part made me realize certain things i wasn`t even aware of and i had goos skin while listening to him.
his words were like a re-load button that helped me find again the pure (almost childish) joy of just drawing and creating for the pure pleasure of it..
i got my smile back on my face
review: a must by for all!!! even lawyers, farmers and politicians should learn something from it
you helped a lot
Yeah, the DVD was excellent! Recommend this to both novice and professional artists, anyone can learn something from it. Much love and thanks again.
The timing of this couldn't be more perfect. I ordered Marko's DVD just last week (getting a credit card over here is not quite as easy as it is for you lot in the US) and it arrived yesterday. I've watched the whole thing twice since then - one of the most inspirational things I've ever seen. I only recently decided to give a higher education in art a chance after being entirely self-taught up until this point, so it was especially great for me to hear how someone who hasn't had any formal art education and teachers thinks about art and share his perspectives. I imagine this'll help a great deal throughout my studies in keeping me focussed on what's important and not getting caught up in all the self-righteous bullshit some professors tend to proclaim.
The only negative part I can come up with is that shipping cost me 30 something dollars, which was almost as much as the DVD itself, but I see that issue's already been resolved by offering downloadable video's.
Never having painted a stroke in my life I reckon the rest of the video's you guys are offering right now might be way out of my league, but as soon as I start getting more comfortable painting and using colour I'll definitely be buying more of these. Can't wait to see what you're coming up with next.
Many thanks to Marko, and the entire Massive Black crew for being a source of constant inspiration. Your selfless hard work is appreciated more than you know.
i bought the dvd too
and it was great,
I learned a lot from the way he draws, but that wasn't the part wich i learned the most from
when he talks about his visions a lot became clear to me, like the "no fear to create" part was really helpfull to me.
the only thing i would like to see is english subtitles :p but thats just because my english kinda sucks.
thx for all the work u guys put into this dvd, its really helped me out in all kinds of places
I want this DVD so bad, it hurts to read about how insane it is.
I bought this dvd when it was first released, one of the best things I own for inspiration, Its great to see such an amazing artist work from nothing to finished concepts. When I'm struggling to put anything down on paper or feel a little intimidated, I pop in my good old friend Marko. Once I hear his soothing voice, I'm ready to take the lead to the paper. voice,
I've seriously watched this dvd 30 + and it never gets old, I'm always learning something from what he says and does. I wish he would do a digi dvd,
inspiring inspiring inspiring

Marko should do one of those $10 features so I can actually afford to be inspired
Kidding, of course, but maybe I won't buy lunch for a while to grab that DVD.
This is by far one of the best break down of character ideation I have seen. Grant it, there aren't many out there, but this sets the bar pretty high.
I like that Marko doesn't try to show you how you should do it. Rather, he says - this is how I do it...take that for what it's worth. I appreciate this more than those that say - if you don't do it this way, you're doing it wrong.
The only problem with this DVD is that I want more. It would be cool if there were a compilation of artist's work and how they go from ideation to final product.
Needless to say, I am downloading the vids from Android Jones and Jason Chan now. I'll be buying Shawn Barber's DVD next.
"It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything."
Yep, that's how i feel too. Easily my favorite DVD.When I'm struggling to put anything down on paper or feel a little intimidated, I pop in my good old friend Marko. Once I hear his soothing voice, I'm ready to take the lead to the paper.
As I said with Andrew's demo, It was most helpful to hear Marko's thoughts on the creation process and beating down "fear". Besides being a proficient and talented artist, he sounds like he has done a lot of thinking about his "place" in the art world. I found it quite "soothing" as others have mentioned, to have Marko remind us that we all go through the doubt phase, but learning to process it wisely can turn us into better artists.
I'm sure it's a HUGE inside joke, but I wish I knew what the whole deal with the Gorilla was... in the beginning, when it showed Marko walking to work and there was a quick flash of a Gorilla. Made me smile and think of all the inside jokes we have around my shop.
anyway, thanks guys.
I got this dvd almost as soon as it was released and i agree that i get just as much from watching his process as just listening to his thoughts on art. Probably the most helpful was his urging to not rush the process, and finding freedom by facing your fear of failure, because your work can never hurt you.
It's also fantastic to see someone flesh out such cool characters from start to finish, really inspiring to see someone able to do it even when it comes difficultly to so many. Lets one know that such a level of skill is attainable if you practice diligently. And watching him work made me a lot more conscious about working my drawing evenly so that everything sort of comes together at once, while not getting too hung up on any given spot.
"Today, a young man on acid, realised that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves... here's Tom with the weather." - Bill Hicks
I found this DVD enlightening and I showed it to concept artists group, they also took a ton away from it.
He speaks of painting as the next step and I really want to see him paint all four characters or a character, a vehicle and a landscape in the next installment. The difference in the pencil and the paint would be a really illuminating experience.
i agree with ConCrete, a paiting DVD from Marko would be great
excellent demos. the dvd is well worth the price. to be honest I didn't get as much as I hoped to out of the documentary. i wanted to know more about his beginnings, how he got into art, what he went through, things like that.
hi, like most of the comments above I think this is a great DVD and was of great help to me. One thing that I would've like to have included in the DVD would be some psd's of the four characters. It would be nice to look at all the detail calmly and also at a decent resolution. You could also make them available in the members exclusive psd area as a last resort. Just a thought...
In any case thanks for making these tutorials, will look forward to the next batch.
I thouroughly enjoyed this DVD for the inpiration it created with abstract techniques and the constructive crit about getting into the industry. Hard work and sacrificing nights out with your friends to work is the only way you can stand out in the art world. I don't even want to list the number of students I graduated with that are flipping burgers or doing something they hate simply because they gave "what was required" to the class. Alot had more sashes on them than me graduation day, but the language of your art is all that tends to speak for you once your out in the real world. Fantastic! Marko truly expresses the keys to sucess.
Love the tutorial on becoming a better artist....yeah.....it is that simple
I just watched the DVD twice, I like it because he has his own philosophy on art and life in general, His philosophy should be practiced through and through by every artist if they want to make it in the world, its a dog eat dog world out there and if your not working on your skillzors and drawing every day than why bother? (Or in Markos words.. "You are a turd")...
Ever since I became aware of this I have been trying/striving for that feelings of accomplishment and successful life style, But thanks to Marko I now see things a bit differently. The dvd is quite well done and for a price of 45 bucks it is well worth it! so as Marko says do not gripe bout it..Instead jump for joy that he actually took the time to help us out, but in reality every artist knows very well that he or she can only help them selves out!
Loved the "How to draw" tutorial, once I saw that tutorial I instantly knew Marko was going to say something easy and simple and funny.. I did laugh a bit because its true... In more ways than one.
Instructional DVD: 10/10
Markos skillzors: 10/10
Markos ability to make me laugh: 10/10
Thanks for all the hard work guys, Massive Black and Marko! Oh and im hoping Marko will finish his.. bio?
Sooooo good, with his no fear philosophy, Marko really brings it home for me. i try to really create a story behind my characters, and all my work now, thank you Marko. cant wait to meet you!
what about a downloadable version
Marko not only excellent artist, but also not bad philosopher.Very useful information, plus this piece real inspires.
Though I not much understood...because,I crappy know english.
Nice bonus on second DVD. Curiously enough see you boys in real life.
Thank you Marko. Wait new DVDs

Blacko: Have you been to dvd.massiveblack.com?
Anyway, yeah, that's the only place you can buy it, and it's not available for download. Maybe eventually, but not currently.
