Damn man, you are making good progress, especially on the digital front. But don't neglect your pencil work, push it to the next level . Any tips on shading/values would be appreciated, you seem to have a pretty good grasp of it.

snootchy- thanks a lot but i don't have a scanner and the one at my schools computer lab is shitty and only does 8x11 (the only sb i have anymore is 11x14 :/) but when i buy one, there are so many pencils i have that you're not seeing, it'll be a massive dump...

bleupencil-thanks it is a threesome in the making yeah i fell in love with the ref pic the instant i saw it. porn is a goooold mine for figure refs

shou'- i'll get around to doing mroe of those, but probably a lot of them at once in one big painting or something. i got bored of just painting a fruit lol

abr7man and snobbyoo- thanks, i'll keep improving until i find a girlfriend to go crazy over hahaha

d.c.- thanks a lot, like i said before i got lots of pencils that i just can't scan right now. i do want that next level so badly, like, to draw figures out of my head that are bitchin and stuff. as for tips, i don't really know any, but this is how i learned it (not strictly like this but sort of): think really hard about the way the light would act on every single surface you are rendering when you're drawing from your head. then draw something from life and simultaneously think really hard first of what values are actually there and then why they are there (light is coming from this angle or that or bouncing off whatever). simple rounded objects with 1 light source is easiest to learn from. keep working like that and eventually you get a feel for how it works and you dont have to think so damn hard anymore.

i've been busy with school and just been drawing a lot instead of painting so there isn't much to show except this giant picture of 30 second gestures. but i kinda just wanted to reply

Oh hai! Hey. Looks like you're doing all the right things with your studies.
For that "porn piece" ;p, the rendering is incredibly convincing.
I don't really know where you're taking this moodwise, but I right now I find it rather disturbing (wich is not bad at all). With the bottle in her hand and the guys looming over her, along with the fact we can't see any expresion on her face it has this slight rape in progress feel to it. She's really an object here.
Now, like I said, nothing bad about that, this has a strong, though unsettling vibe. (Or maybe I'm just sensitive.)
Oh, yeah and those gestures are awsome.

I can see where Digitally Dumbfounded is coming from. The shirt around the wrists does give it a tied up bondage vibe while the guy in the foreground has his head cocked to the side looking shady. It's interesting how taking an image out of context transforms it. I think you could come back to this image some time later on, transform it further and apply some oil on it. Has the potential to become a really strong piece with a quiet simmering sense of danger. Just think about what stark lighting and colors could do for it.

That gesture page is totally awesome. Is that from memory or did you have a model?

Props on the threesome pic! I wouldn't go so far as "rape in progress". I would say it looks more like a sleaze fest is about to commence.

algenpfleger- pshhh i just doodle around... you're the one who's insanely dedicated, mr. 10 pages a day or whatever you do

snootchy- thanks i have been but mostly in pencil

digitallydumbfounded- yeah!! this is what i was getting at. i mean not quite rape but like, she's totally just a toy; they're getting her drunk and doing whatever they want, and that she's sitting while they're standing and that you can't see her face just makes her seem that much more degraded. that's not my doing, i just copied a ref picture, but yea that's what i saw in the picture and why i chose it

eon- yeah i probably will come back to it, and I can't decide about the stark lighting. on one hand i think it would look excellent, make the background darker and have it have a feel like this thing by mr. blonde but i also kinda wanna have it look like a frivolous 50's pin up thing for an ironic effect.

peetaer- thanks, the gestures are from posemaniacs. 30 seconds each

    bleupencil- thanks

    d.c.- thanks and you're welcome

well i've just been doing like... whatever i feel like. mostly that is drawing a bunch of little figures in my sketchbook. but i do have some digital stuff so i can actually update. first an enviro, yeah i didn't keep up with them daily because tbh they are really boring. it's just a bunch of crap. i'd rather draw something with some emotion to it but bleh whatever i'm obligated to practice this stuff unless i want to do lineart figures on white backgrounds the rest of my life. and then there are some lineart doodles on white backgrounds which were the fun part

The painted picture of the enviro looks really good... but only as foundation for more detail. Push yourself to finish it and make it look totally awesome.

Though the doodles convey technical knowledge they seem to lack inspiration. Not feeling inspired lately?

space-sprayer- thanks, and thanks for returning the favor

peetaer- heh it feels good to get an honest crit. honestly i spent a long time thinking about what you said. the enviro part, well, i set an hour time limit for myself and cause it still takes me so damn long to get colors right i'm left with very little time for details... as far as the doodles being uninspired: i don't really know what to draw most of the time. i wish i could come up with some good stuff but... well, this update has some more interesting subjects but it still is basically just half ass anatomy exercises most of the time isn't it... i guess i should treat brainstorming as just as much a skill that requires practice as drawing itself, and just start trying to come up with shit already. a year or two ago i'd say the same thing i think now: i'm not good enough to do what i really want, i still need to just practice. but... a year or two ago i'd kill to be able to draw from my head like i can now, even though i still think i'm not very good. so i guess it's futile to wait for myself to get to a certain point when it's a learning process all the way in every regard. that said expect some weird perverted stuff in my sb because... i guess im weird and perverted hahaha

snootchy- i'll get to it man, i promise! expect imaginary colors soon, but also expect them to be embarassingly bad lol

    dhilipsomesh- thanks

well i actually made it to a store to get a more portable sketchbook. and then i made it to a scanner, so here are some pencils from recently. the last page i intend to render fully, i guess i'll rescan at that point

dude. its good to hear what had to say in response to my crit. its interesting that you're in that mindset "i'm not good enough yet". that's the basic mindset i was in (in regards to something else actually but still loosely related) until a good friend of mine - who is about 2 decades my senior - dropped some wisdom on my ass: art is a learning process, you're always going to think that you can do better, be better but the what you have to do is get started and just keep going; that's how you get places. it doesn't matter how "good" or "bad" you are now; it's about doing... and doing the best you can in the moment that you're in right.

man, when he dropped that on me it was like an amazing wake up call that made me just want to keep doing and keep going and never stop, always knowing that everything is already okay. you just have to keep going!!!

so bring out the perverted and weird stuff. i love perverted and weird. if that's your talent then you should show it to the world! you should live for that stuff!!!

BTW, your last post conveyed way more inspiration and creativity and dedication. keep going with that. let's see more!!!

    rock on dude!!!

snootchy- i'll get around to the coloring like probably next update i swear

peetaer- hmm you know what else i realized... i am sticking to a comfort zone hardcore by never going for what i really want to draw, because when i start taking it seriously and feel like there's something to lose if i screw up a drawing, the pressure gets me and i lose concentration and fuck up... so i'm really going to push myself to finish something big that i can actually show off. and i'll probably fuck up towards the end of it but then i can try again and again etc. thanks for all of your words.

some doodles and an enviro and some posemaniacs practice... i really tried to do something hard with the enviro, at least hard to me, and i used a different brush, so thats probably why it's not so good but i guess it was good for me to try

i think you're going to be really great at speedpainting, you pick colors really well, just let those inhibitions go to draw that perfect line, i think that last color enviro is really nice even though the proportions are off, i think utilizing the shift key is excellent for getting your horizontals and verticals especially for buildings and architecture

    keep em greats coming!

Your sketchbook pages are always filled with much humor, it's strange that you find you have nothing to draw. I think I'm going to try shading your way to see how it goes with my drawings. Really digging your usage of strong blacks. Shading is something that intimidates me the same way you don't feel like screwing up a drawing so I'll jump in with it and ruin a few, lol. It's bad when artists get too precious with thier artworks. It's when we step back and get some distance that we realize that it's rarely as awful as we imagine it to be when we're in the process of creating.

Your anatomy studies are awesome! I love how many sketches you pack into a page it really shows how much you love to draw. I also admire the way you shade with the line work. Your digital landscapes (esp the one with the boat and the water) show a completely different side of your skills... it would be cool to see more of that too.

    Great work!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. God I love the hatch work you do in your sketchbook!! Must try this technique for myself - I love the way it turns out. Will probably take a deal to get as good as yours though Are you just using a pencil or mechanical pencil?

Good work on the rest of the stuff too, nice colours in that environment one.

zulu- thanks a lot, i'm trying really hard to

snootchy- ohhh right i remember the shift key from when i used to make skins for cs models... thanks man.

eon- shading is really intimidating to me too. it's like, you do linework and you're happy cause you think it came out well and then when you go to shade it you feel like there's so much to lose... the only way i get over this is if i just do so much drawing i stop valueing each little drawing cause there will be like 10 more of them i'll do the next day, then the next, and the next...then i can experiment with shading on these endless test subjects without anxiety

estrella- thanks, i'll be doing a lot more digital stuff now but i always felt like i didn't even know how to draw well enough to start digital painting

bleupencil- haha, it's not a very original technique, i'm learning it from looking at the big guys like wesley burt, danielc, hurricane etc. it's a mechanical hb .5mm but that's cause i ran out of b lead which i thought was better and no place sells it... i guess my highlights are more subtle with hb but making things dark takes serious grinding the pencil against the page for like 50 years and that's annoying. if it were convenient i'd be using a normal wooden pencil, i liked using those better but i hate having to sharpen every two seconds to get thin dark lines and im usually sketching not at home

    mentler- i like bones

here are two digital wips... one is a speedpaint i decided to take further than an hour and finish totally, but so far im just posting the progress after an hour... environmental perspective really messes with your head when color picking... and the next is a wip from imagination, trying to do my best with colors but still so newb :/
