Pencils are looking great, and it looks like you've got a good eye for digital, I want some more pixel-goodness!!

    holy shit so many replies

daveskogstad: yeah i figure it's the same as anything... trial and error is necessary no matter how much knowledge you try to amass beforehand

Eon: here you go drew my friend, she's a cutie, but i'm not very good with likenesses unless i take a very long time to get it right. oh well, i still like it.

yoitisi: thanks, if only i could get out of only studying all the time :/ it's like the best bad habit i have

Pyroclasm00: sorry, i'm not from philly, i just have friends there and that's where i'd want to go to art school. i'm currently stationed in new brunswick

lacadam: haha yes someone gets it.

serhc: yeah, i hope i run into you in mason gross sometime

    ignominious:

chief: there's some more pixelness in this update

this is HUGE dump of stuff. nothing spectacular has been going on in my sketchbook, but i have some pages here. i'll really work and finish some fully rendered things in it tomorrow--i've just been doodling around recently. i posted some digital stuff around and i'll post them here too, like still lifes in this ps thread http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...03#post1595403 and a wip (i'm actually trying to finish a piece!!!) of some silly little subject i felt like getting out of my system. go here to comment on the wip, if you're really good with anatomy and figure construction i'm begging for a paintover or comments or anything.

oh and has anyone seen this thing? http://www.posemaniacs.com/blog/ it's pretty neat. thanks to ped for showing it to me. put the timed pose to 10 seconds if you want to fry your brain i uploaded one of me doing that too.

Still life fruits and veggies rock! So 3D and well lit. What brush did you use and how long on average on a piece? I definitely have to start doing those.

wow much improvement as well. Love those veggie studies. the banana and red onion are my favs. Keep up the hardwork. The no ref value studies I did where good practice. It helps to set out 3 values and then try and describe as much as u can with opaque shapes and then when an ok read is achieved blend it up. And if you cant figure out the lighting just paint an imaginary cone of light traveling through the atmosphere to the subject. Then wen your done finding the cone paint it out. Limit you range, it will help wen it comes to doing a whole scene (something I need practice with). By keeping tabs on your value ranges you can differentiate article in the scene.

awesome stuff, and thanx for peekin at my book too.

eon: lol someone asked that in the ps thread too... i only use hard edge round brush with flow jitter set to pen pressure. my art teacher in highschool (who is like a father figure to me, he's amazing, which reminds me i have to show him some of this) just tried to teach me to use the fewest strokes possible to get the point across, so when i did that with wacom some interesting shapes of color resulted. but it all just came from the circle and i mostly only used sizes 46 and 7, and i used 70 something to start out. and they took 1-2 hours each

obx: thanks for the advice, i'm going to try that. i'm gonna keep checking your sketchbook, so you better keep posting!

felt tired/unenthused all day, did a quick sp in the sketchbook and wasted some pages then tried to copy/emulate danielC (who is god by the way) and her nasty minimalist faces. it was one of the hardest things i've ever tried to do art-wise. i've got a lot of respect for you d, if you ever read this.

yesterday and today i tried figures from my head alone. i was terrible so i only scanned my best efforts. i even used my friend's sketchbook cause i knew they'd be embarassing. then i did a bit of studying off the pose maniacs site and got a little better grip on the form but i didn't try anything from my head i'll do that tomorrow. then i did some sb pages off photoref. very bleh stuff. just gotta keep going.

    kischi, ian, chermilla: thanks

another boring second rate update of me trying to come up with and render things out of my imagination... i'm doing it fairly lazily right now. soon something in my head will kick into gear, i'll realize i won't reach the level of skill i want just moseying around with it, and i'll do some actual drawings, but for now, this is what i have.

Hey mister, no one gets there in one day.
I have been doing sketching studies over month now and i am not where you are right now...

Anyway, those "second rate" update isn't that much second rate, more like that you didn't hold your patience to finish them.

well, keep up the good work

massive dump, i was away for a while but brought my sketchbooks with me. i got the bargue book for christmas, i love it, and i know i'm using it incorrectly but i don't care. it's helped me tremendously already anyway. i'm back at college now so i probably will update much less frequently, but i will keep drawing all the time, i promised myself.

not much to say... haven't updated for a while cause i've been busy with school, but i've still been drawing, here's what i've done so far. there are a lot of garbage pages idk why i scanned everything. we're using pastels in my drawing 2 class so i tried a couple random faces from photoref with them... they're extremely fun, they're just like crayons

Its good to see someone pushing out so many studies from life. Its great practice and it helps you improve much quicker I think than just copying anime or someone else's work. Although its also good to do Master Studies, since you're not really copying their art work, your studying the way they painted, studying the way they used color and so on. Its also good to use reference when creating your own characters. Sorry for the long comment. Your doing great, as Tigermilk stated before me, love the dedication man.
    Cant wait to see more.

daveskogstad: thanks, i spent a while on that one, and then, as always, gave up once i finished the part i wanted to concentrate on. gotta break that habit...

loolarge: hey good to hear from you again. and you're the insane one, i've seen those thousand million figure drawings you seem to do every day

tigermilk: thanks, but it's more like i'm a lazy bum with nothing else to do. i have the hardest time pushing myself.

envisor: studies from life are the most fun to me, i don't know why people resist them.

well, i feel like i haven't seriously done any work, or anything i'm planning on. i always make these grandiose schemes like "ok for the next few days i'll study hands like a fiend and get really good at them" or "i'll do posemaniacs 30 second studies every day" but it never happens and i just have doodles for now.
and after drawing on any scrap paper i could find on buses i decided it would be better to just get a pocket sketchbook, so that's what the last pages are

niccce sketchbook! & thx for dropping by
your posts show good progress (with high dedication!); sometimes (in some posts) it seems to me like you fall a bit back and the pages loose a bit of confidence, i think you can sometimes compensate that with including studies/stuff from different subjects. at least for me its sometimes important to do that, i get the concentration back and confidence gets another chance
another thing that may help you (when constructing) is to experiment with lines where the form goes into shadow. this way you can check the form before you shade. you might want to check out studies from Chromosome who mastered that pretty much out! an example.

    peace & keep it up!

xysdf: thanks, i remember seeing chromosome's work, he's incredible, and i try to imitate that drawing out the shadow thing sometimes... it helps build shape better than just outline, that's for sure. it took me a while to learn that one.

i went to philly all weekend and only had my little sketchbook so that's all that's updated this time. got to draw some people playing instruments, it was fun

i'm pretty confident i can draw a figure out of my head with just a little patience and erasing, so i'm starting to study other stuff now, like textures and animals. eventually once i feel like my visual library is strong enough i'll try to make characters and beasts that i actually put thought into, but for now i'm just experimenting with stupid things

i haven't updated this thing in forever but i kinda miss this site. i've still been drawing more or less, but i don't have the internet at my house and i don't have access to a scanner bigger than 8.5x11 and my current sketchbook is 11x14. so i scanned a few of my better pages (they're butchered D:), and i think i'm gonna go back to my smaller one so i can keep updating and because it's not so clunky.

I really love your pencil rendering, its great! And those fruits you painted, I definitely have to get better with this colour thing because they look great.

For crits, I think that some of your figures, the proportions are off. Its the torso, and the relative sizes of the shoulders and hips, or the length of it. If you haven't, read and work with Bridgman. I also think you could benefit from some portrait studies, just ones with 3/4 view 1/2 view, just anything like that.

I really like a lot of the stuff in that animal post with the nicely rendered reptile. Don't stop!

Hey, clean digital lines. Curious how your pencil rendering will translate on the tablet, should be fun (or in SSG spirit: sexy!)

i did an oil painting for the first time in a few years... my mom wanted me to paint her orchid for her. i took pictures as i went through it, but not for the education of other people, cause i dont really know what i'm doing. except that look at my pallette- i dont have any black paint to work with. i guess that's a good tip. and sadly the last and final shot was taken on a really shitty camera compared to the other ones
