    Arrow Gifts!

graduation is coming up, and I need to buy a gift for my friend.
she's really into art, and is going to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design).
I am completely lost when it comes to art, so I would greatly appreciate it if you guys have any ideas as to what would be a good gift for her!

maybe some pointers on some good quality things that artists would use. (Pencils 4b, 2b, or hb?, pens, sketchbooks, what brand?, etc.)
and it would be really great if any of you have a creative way to wrap the gift or something.

    thanks!

I'm still confused about the rabbit, but the pegasus t-shirt in the shop looks pretty cool

Im hoping he meant the car model by VW. Otherwise it's something that makes you and your girlfriend alot more intimate. Google is your friend.

Admittedly I'd be happy if someone went into an art store and picked out things at random.

Do you know what kind of art she wants to get into? What stuff she already has in her studio? Any hints at all? Or if you don't want her buy supplies, ever think of a print from a favourite artist?

    ROFL @ Jason!

If she's going to RISD she will need a good pair of walking shoes, caffeine pills and the number of a good therapist

For real, I would suggest a nice sketchbook - hear me out. Something with handmade papers or a unique binding that sets it apart from the usual black hardcover books at the RISD store. No matter what her major she is sure to use it in her foundation year - maybe have a sweet note written to her in the front cover?

I know you said you weren't artistically inclined, but if there were a way to do a sketch of her on the first page, that would also be sweet... I know that one worked on me back in the day

There's this cool purse thing I just bought that's a portable sketchbook and watercolor kit by Winsor & Newton.

That all depends on what she likes to draw with - heavier papers for wet media like watercolor, smoother papers are better for inks and something with a bit of tooth is good for pencil. If you want a good all-around sketchbook, you could get her a good old moleskine:

    http://www.moleskine.com/eng/default.htm

Or if you want to go much more personal, you can find handmade sketchbooks within your price range here:

    Just Paper.com

Really nice stuff here but a smidge pricey for the size of the journals: http://www.amanobooks.com/blank/index.html

The only drawback of a hand-made sketchbook is that the paper inside is often somewhat flimsy or rough, as it's meant to be decorative. You're prettymuch paying extra for a really pretty cover and nice-looking paper, which could be fine if you are looking to give a gift like that. Ideally you would want a book that's acid-free, in any case.

Good luck in your search and wish her all my best from a fellow RISD alumna!
