    The best Video Game Bosses?

Me and slash were dicussing on IRC, and we could hardly think of any fantastic bosses from the last century of gaming.

What are your favorite bosses and why? This conversation was brought up because of my expectations of the "BIG DADDIES" in the new bioshock game, im hoping they will be a challenging boss figure.

Pyramid Head: He was the first boss-character that made me feel like i truely had to feel instead of chase.

God of war's Minotaur Lord: The scale and the concepts behind the gameplay in this sequence were just so perfectly thought out.(so fun on insane mode)

Diablo 2's Diablo: While Baal outcased him in the mode's normal and nightmare, fighting diablo on HELL mode, was an amazing challenge. I do not believe i ever bet him solo with any classes besides maybe a werebear(tons of hp).

Metal Gear solid 3: I have to say, no game has come close to the creativity in the boss battles that MGS3 had. Half the time you tell someone you beat a boss for the first time, they let you know that you probably screwed up and did it wrong. (ps, use the sleeping dart for the sniper, his cammo is godly).

Resident Evil 4: The fake eyed monster, nothing is cooler than a monster swinging at you on its own intestines, nuff said.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Youtube Links of some listed favorite bosses.

    Beowulf(DMC3):

    Iron Maiden(RE4)

    Vizier(Prince of persia 3)

    The Twins(Prince of persia 3)

    Pyramid Head(Slient hill 2)

    The Minotaur

    Dark Samus(Metroid Prime 2)

    The end(mgs3)

    Diablo(Diablo 2)

    Two owls(Okami)

    Kraid(Super Metroid)

    Alma(Ninja Gaiden Black)

    Corpser

    Sephiroth

    Bitores Mendez/The big cheese

    4th(Shadow of the colossus)

    First boss- Lava (wind waker)

    big daddy(bioshock)

Fire boss(Devil May cry 4 trailer, i know i ahvent played but look at this video and try not to pee)

regenerators and iron maidens in re4. they're not bosses,i know, but i hate them with all my heart. only enemies so far to really scare the crap outta me in a game.
although big cheese and del lago are cool too.

The Shambler in Quake 1 was great, as well as the Makron in Quake 2.

I also really enjoyed playing against the last two Prince of Persia's end bosses - though they were tough as hell.

Also, I really enjoyed all of the Diablo2 Bosses - everyone one of them.

I'm going to have to agree with davi on mgs3, the battle with the end was probably the high point of that game.

okami had some great boss battles as well, ninetails and the final boss being the best

worst boss ever: duriel from d2, so frustrating, especially if you were playing as a caster

Found him to be tough as nails with the druid, but with the sorceress I cast wake of fire and kept running away. To me he was the least cool of all the d2 bosses, but I still got a huge sense of accomplishment every time I killed him.

Metroid Fusion's bosses could be harder than hell. The Nightmare, the second fight with the B.O.X. security robot, and that one spider boss were the hardest, if I remember correctly.

the devil in Messiah was tough enough but i have short attention span in computer games, rarely play games when I do it is games like Doom or Postal where you go on killing sprees... maybe I should worried about my choice in gaming

Beowulf (Devil May Cry 3): You're nothing but a little fly compared to him. The way he moves and attacks gives the feel of a true brutal beast. I always enjoy slashing those bosses to their death.

Diablo (Diablo): The feeling when you finally slay him. I was literally blasting through my roof (at least bumping my head at it).

    Not so fun bosses:
Last Boss (Quake): Took me hours understanding how to beat him. All that ammo wasted. I actually used the give all cheat, put a little weight on my shoot button and went away and then came back every now and then to make sure I had ammo to waste.

Kraven (Spider-Man 3): Frustrating... using lizards, invisibility, cheap moves and talks non-stop.

Decent bosses are pretty hard to come by these days. Alot latley just seem to lack that wow factor.

Otogi 1 & 2 had some pretty decent bosses. The giant centipede was freaking awsome. Just Imagine this huuuge sinious beast flying towards you. Then in the second game you have to fight two of them at the same time! So fun! I also liked the Crimson King in that game too.

Ninja Gaiden bosses were a good challenge. Fucking Alma though, I hate that bitch..trust me to have saved in a place where you cant go back and get potions. I happened to have barley any life at that time.

Also some of the Shadow of the colossus bosses should be up there.

Form, Form, Form, Form, Form, Form, Form, Form, Form, Form.

Super Control (SNES): Giant T-800 skeleton boss.

Super Metroid (SNES): The big green asshole that took up 2 screens in the Maridia area.

Final Fantasy VII (SNES): Kefka. 5 screens high, with an amazing musical score. Bust out that Ultima!

Streets of Rage 2 (GEN): The bartender in the first stage. You think he's going to call for help, but when you see him in the back alley this burbon maker is out to kick your ass, very cool fight with some thumpin' music.

Phantasy Star 2 (GEN): Mother Brain. Amazing fight, with an incredible ending. I still remember the music.

Final Fantasy 7 (PSone): Sephiroth. Need I say more?

Guardian Heroes (SAT): All the bosses in this game were very cool, especially the giant round robot that you fight in the town. This game was seriosly cool and worth buying a Saturn for.

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube): Basically all the boses were very cool, but the giant spider-monster at the end was especially cool.

Gears of War (Xbox360): General Raam and that huge spider.

Dead Rising (Xbox360): The psychopath, crazy Clown Adam will creep you hell out of you, but after killing him gets you the invaluable min-chainsaws.

The bosses of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island were also pretty fun. Not hard, but cool and fun.

I thought the endboss fight in mgs (ps1) was better than mgs3's.

The Twins in Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, especially in hard mode, uber fun!

i havent played any other game where two hard-hitters (one hit from either of them and life drops by quarter or more) have a go at you at once, and the fight is right after a super high-speed chariot race, when you least expect a boss fight hehehe plain awesome

Oooh yeah I remember that - tough as nails. Went off like a little school girl after finally defeating them. Also, got frustrated the first few times so I quit - when I got back, I had to redo the race. I drive a chariot as well as an easily distracted paralyzed mole with the hand eye coordination of a snake....

Tavion, Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast (Better than the final boss by far)
Xaero, Quake 3 Arena (Cybernetic Buddhist monk, just plain cool)
Onikage, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (Moves in ways that shouldn't be physically possible)

    Ace Combat 5
    Battle against SOLG:

The mission before this Final Boss
is INSANE i tried like 10 or 12 times
    in a row before completing.

but it is worth it, this boss i awesome
and the music is one of the very best
climax on all the ace combat series

if you are planning on playing this
don't watch this video, cause first
time you see, hear and play this
is one of those gaming moments
    you will cheerish forever :-)

I found all these incredibly boring (to watch). The Carmagnolle atmospheric suit from bioshock is interesting though.

I really can't recall a boss battle which had epic varied innovative gameplay. I've certainly been experiencing high pulse during boss battles, but nothing which made me go 'whoa'.

If I were forced to think of something,

    • Kung Fu (NES)... the first big guy whom you punch repeatedly in the crotch going Hua! Hua! Hua!
    • Megaman legends, Tron Bonne / Gesellschafft / Reaverbots, say no more.
    • Punch out, because of the funny responses you get.
    • Getting out of the car-tank in Blaster Master, then every regular enemy is now a boss.
    • I guess the Dragon in Megaman... (2 was it?) which followed you as you had to make nasty jumps was a favourite for some, but I don't remember it.
    • Fighting the palace bosses in Kid icarus was fun if you had freed those little statue warriors, but they got owned too quickly since they were retards. Interesting concept though, I'd like to see more epic coop in boss battles, maybe stuff requiring coop.

Metroid 1 bosses were pretty shitty gameplaywise, maybe except for the motherbrain which at least had the "freeze the rings" thing going.

What are the most common boss battle components? Out of my arse list:
    • Shoot the core.
    • Just get in and attack, but get away when the boss signals he's going to attack!
    • Flip over and stab in weak spot... 3 times. (Every Nintendo game, and also Sony Crabs)
    • The boss rotates or escalates behaviour/attack pattern.
    • The boss is stripped of layers of crap.
    • It's raining giant stones or crap is flying around and you have to avoid it. Then stuff returns to normal and you can attack again.
    • The ground is gradually disappearing.
    • He's HUEG! Do you see how HUEG that guy is? Oh yeah he's burning too, just like in LotR!
    • When the HUEG boss slashes you with his 1 ton sword/club, it goes right through you and you do the fall animation, then you have to feverishly push the get up button.

There's some Japanese games with cool female bosses. As you battle them, their clothes disappear!!!1

Psycho Mantis from MGS1 was pretty innovative( you have to switch to the 2nd controller port then its easy as cake, because he cant read your mind)

Hah,, I actually beat him on the 1st controller port then went back and realised how absolutely easy switching ports is

I like the old sniper guy in MGS3, he was a bitch to beat took me an hour on first try
