AUGUST SP THREAD BABY...here we go again

ya' know...i've noticed a trend in some of my portraits lately. and DURACEL pointed it out once....i checked out one of android's portraits many months ago. it was one where he worked a portrait off one of coro's or manley's techniques. what he did was block in the major shape of the face in a dark sienna and then brought out all the colors on top of it. i've been doing this for sometime but....i'm doing something wrong. everything always ends up looking a little burnt or "dark".

i would love some advice from some peeps.

    anyways....on to AUGUST.

ps. my birthday is tomorrow (the 2nd:p )

    keep'em com'n folks!!!!!!!!!

keyth - not sure what to suggest, because I seem to have that same problem myself. You might try using some cooler colors are you're painting, or lighten the whole thing up when you're done by tweaking the levels or something. I dunno.

hed|lamb - 23? Jesus you make me feel old.

Hermchen - looks good, but you'd better fix that posture or you'll be a hunched over old man eventually.

i'm not sure which of android's portraits or what technique in general you are trying to incorporate into your stuff. but i would suggest using more color and more saturated color in general. not at all like my painting, but just using flecks of complimentary hues to get more depth and variety. your portrait is pretty monochromatic. i really have to force myself not to work that way though i know that is the scheme in a lot a lot of concept work, especially what i see on this board.

i start pretty much every piece now with a sienna background and just build other colors on top, trying to let the sienna show thru in good spots.

    Keyth,

I agree with Erik, you don't have enough saturated color. You tend to stick with warm/brownish colors. Try using cool colors, such as blues and greens, for shadows. Warm colors for highlights.

Also, It is very important to work all over your paintings; you focus on the face too much, and neglect your backgrounds. Negative space is equally impotant. Figure and space go hand and hand together. In order to render your portrait as true as possible, you must compare it to the space around it. Use More dimension in your backgrounds could be nice.

Another thing, try using a middle/nuetral tone background. Try a grey or burnt sienna background.

AUGUST SP THREAD BABY...here we go again

I actually broke out a pencil and a mirror for this one. I need to get back into the habit of natural media, and work on not.. spot shading. I'll see if I can't rework this in Painter or something.

Try as I might, I couldn't get the other half of my face to even resemble something symmetrical. So I scrapped it. Reminds me of that one artist... can't remember his name, but he'd only capture one half of a frontal view of his sketch subjects. 3/4s is so much easier to work off of.. gah.

Experimenting this morning, nothing worthwhile. I'll comment on our conversation about age, as soon as I get back, today started off in a hurry. [Aug.2]

    Influenced heavily by Erik, obviously.

Erik - you look good in blue.

clayrodery - have fun at college!

silvrain - I have the same problem, for me it's the eyes. I can never line them up straight on a frontal portrait. Oh well, more practice, I guess!

Blackhawk - you look like you need a nap.

Oh, and I love seeing all you guys with the facial pierces.

hed|lamb i really dig your second piece. it's a pretty cool world, i see shit happening everywhere. it also has a 28 days later feel to it.

my main prob with my own digi painting is that i lose the spontenaity, something about the fake look of the materials that just begs me to keep working it till it looks more legit. i'll try one and stop it early.

    blackhawk very cool eyeballs.

Damn, so many great portraits this month guys, seriously, you are all kicking ass, don't slow down now.

AUGUST SP THREAD BABY...here we go again

DraigArthur - I do need a nap, I need sleep badly period, but I can't sleep anymore. I'm either working, drawing, painting, or reading and studying art history, I can't sleep anymore. I'm like a hermit at this point, lol.

    Erik - Thanks

Clay - Thanks, I appreciate it. Very cool SP BTW.

Bloodstone - Wonderful texture to this one, some of the color temperatures were out of whack though, but you had a great start going.

Hed - Very visceral and carnal SP's you've had the last week, I love them. I can't seem to mingle much emotion into mine, yours are oozing, very nice.

Hell - Nice work bud, keep them coming.

Have a great Tuesday guys and take it easy. Thanks for keeping this thread alive, this section was looking dead a month ago, but you guys and gals have been a great help, thanks.

Bloodstone- great painting. I love the soft shadows on the eyes and lips. Reminds me of Mark English's work.

Adam Carnes - That demo is incredible! I don't see how my painting reminded you of his work though. Thanks so much for that link, that was really awesome.

Your last SP is looking great too. Watercolor?

yes, watercolor. your low contrast/definition in the eyes/lips/ears remind me of his work. not the marks.
