    Lightbulb

This fallen valkyrie battles through the underworld, on a hopeless quest to regain the favour of Odin, and atone for her sins.

There are many cool entries here. This kind of subject matter is fairly different to what I normally do, so it was a good challenge. I wanted to go for a 'traditional' valkyrie costume, although looking at the other entries now, I think I probably should have gone for something a lot darker and crazier. Also, I didn't start in grayscale like I normally would, so I don't think I pushed the values as much as I could have.

As always, any crits are welcome.

Edit: Immediately after posting, I went to page one and saw Bumskee's entry. Amazing!

For a price Magnilde, the fallen Valkyrie, will bring a desperate warrior victory. For a price she will freeze hot blood in his enemy’s veins and rend him limb from limb. Glory on the battlefield for such a small price: a kiss to her lips perhaps, or some small ring lost among horded treasure. After the frenzy has passed and the warrior awakes, as if from a fever-dream, he realizes the price he’s truly paid. His betrothed saw the kiss and even now plots treachery and poison. The ring was the only sigil that could prove his lineage; in giving it away he has lost his birthright. For while Magnilde is a formidable enemy on the battlefield her chief delight is in the hearth’s destruction. It is for this reason that Freyja asked Odin to exile her.

Having been cast away by Odin and into the service of Hel, The Fallen Valkyrie vowed vengeance on the Allfather. As Ragnarök grows near, she grows bolder in her attacks on Asgard. Adorned with the feathers from the Valkyries she has felled, skulls from Odin's own wolves, and the head of the ram whom Heimdall's horn was crafted.

This is mostly an armor study. I wanted to retain traditional norse designs in the armor.

Still having trouble moving from grayscale to Color. There are some tone issues, but I doubt I'll be able to solve most of the problems before the end.

Edit: Quick and dirty color job...

    Great works peeps.

Fuck me, that's two polls I've missed in two weeks, looks like I need to shape up or give up!

Voted for Wakkawa, just loved the composition and the atmosphere. Elegantly simple and effective.

Well done to everyone that made it through (do I sound bitter?).

Ouch, I never made it to the poll either. I wonder if it's a quality issue, or if my valkyrie wasn't evil-looking enough. Hmm, onto the next one I suppose, when it's ready...

I voted for Main Loop; however, I forgot (I'm stupid, sorry!) that it's multiple choice. I'd LOVE to vote for MORE.

Is there a way I can do this? Puhleeeease?!

Heh. I liked many... I love multiplied votes! It doesn't force me make compromised decisions .
The most favorite would be Main Loop for his tragic and beautiful killer... that's a gorgeous painting, emotion is very strong in it... i wonder if you say again that you didn't know what you wanted to say with her body language... becasue for me she is tortured by remorse and bad memories. I love the colors, soft indefinite fog in the picture, her face and her thin waist... lovely and very soulful...

I love Aly piece very much...To take a pink color and make me forget about its prettiness and my standard associations... well... I respect this, that's very refined understanding of nuances. I liked this cascade like motion diagonally from top to the bottom of the painting... that alone created a desperation and disorder. and it continues in the desperate face of the girl/warrior...As I said before for me it is a stormy picture, IMO, with storm in the soul of the heroine... she is not calm, not confident. To say candidly, I love this painting without lines in your image so much more, Aly... it has a much bigger impact on me than the ones where I know it was many steps in them... so much more freedom and openness in this one, hugely more expressive. If you are Ok with me saying this, I would say it is like touching a real person instead of its reflection in the mirror... much warmer.

lukavi for the little sick, miserable face hiding in those intimidating feathers, plumage, hanging on long necks heads and metals...
I love it for those sad tragic eyes and long nose... without this strong message the picture would be just heap of sharp prickly lines... this face makes all the difference...She is so strange and impossible to understand and even awkward... poor misfit. Love this short but precise manner to say who it is in front of you.

jfwalls Colors are very appealing to me,, this green and orange... ahhh, so beautiful... I love the pose of the heroine,,, across the page, kneeling while riding... so very passionate and intimidating. I wish you didn't paint the torn head so straightforwardly,,, up front... it is too square I think, I wish you gave some perspective to it.. and I wish you painted the spot where man's hair start on the forehead better,,,they look unnatural and forehead should be a bit higher I think... the roots are stretched back... Overall I like her hawk pose and cruel face and how soundlessly she rides through dried up bushes holding the head of the victim... crazy, dysfunctional brains.

joe12south for the first sketch,,, it is way to beautiful to forget it and disregard... the final image need so much more work spent on it... it is lacking the mood of the sketch still... too bold, too square,,, sketch had much more... passion, midnight, end of the battle, desperation, very strong motion of soul...The shadows on her breasts and hips were beautiful and create the feeling of night and sharp light. I love her face and entire I love her figure and the composition.., Lighting is wonderful in the sketch, very dramatic and moody.
I think it would be better to close eyes of the soldier... he is sleeping now. no contact with this world...

maxetormer I like the youthful appearance of your heroine, her energy and readiness to fight... like she didn't realize how long this battle against her own world will be... Mostly her face and young figure did this impression for me. She is still full of big hopes to climb high.

Pixel Dust... your WIP2. I love it... the expression was a but lost in a final image... I liked this confusion and weirdness on her face in the WIP... she has a soul. I love that you gave her soft, feminine hair, curvy braids... she looks almost like a priestess, innocent. She looks like she is unfit for job... interesting.

hjj very dramatic, extremely dramatic... such an outlaw she is, your heroine... Wonderful painting,,, she is beautiful and feminine and scary in the same time... it's a crazy idea to make beauty to be a destroying force. I like this bitterness in the corner of her lips and the full of thought tilt of her heavy armed head... and aggressiveness in the rest of the picture...awesome piece. great handling of tones and light and shadows.

propishus Love it for humorous approach , ha... a very recognizable character... I saw a lot of those Valkyries in real life...if she is miserable... everyone around her has to be miserable..dumb broad.

gunnarsson for the force and spirit in the poses of both her and her horse... I love this sharp heel of her boot... she probably uses it like a weapon too... her head is shaved... she is so strong willed and independent... bet she didn't have any remorse... done deal and she moves on in her new home.

Wakkawa beautiful heroine... her face is very interesting... I wish you showed more magic and suspense in enviro....by precise colors.

Captain Nemo Ahhh, such an interesting story and wonderful pose and body language... Kudos for thinking out of the box...Beautiful overall. I love your piece, although i think many good things might be added still... like some more colors diversity or tones...but even now, I love it. She is soulful and miserable.

sho-nuff Ohh, that's the end of the world... such a vengeful murderer...No trades with her... I love how massive and irreversible in her decisions she looks. Very passionate image.

Talent poured into this week's entries are truly inspiring. All of you did a excellent job. My personal favorites this week, or my personal top 5 in no particular order were:

bumskee - The armor was amazing. The gesture and colors were so good.
Poshspice - The lighting and sense of action is wonderful. I didnt really see the fallen part in yours, but I still think it is great.
Lukavi - Just plain creative. Very twisted and amazing armor.
FooFoo - The armor and sex appeal is awesome.
Maxetormer - There hasnt been a thing you have done I didnt like as of yet. The action and pose is really cool. Hope your mom is doing well.

Well you guys and the rest of the entries for sure set the bar high as to where I would like to be one day. Thanks for sharing your talents.

Great gallery! I limited myself to 3 votes, and broke it down as follows:

Favorite take on the armor: Lukavi
It was very different then anything I expected to see, and simply blew me away because of the creativity. I imagined being an employer and thinking "Which would catch my eye the most while still meeting the criteria of focusing on the armor, giving the animator/graphic designer/etc something to really sink their teeth into?" Or in this case poke their eye out with.

Favorite work on their armor: Prepsage
The detail and coloring are intricate and subtle, whie fitting the overall mood wonderfully. Somehow each piece/section seems traditional but better. I also liked the direction of lighting alot, fitting the mood and giving Prepsage the best chance to highlight the armor.
    * If I had given myself another vote in this area, it would have gone to Bumskee, especially for the etching on the armor created.

Favorite Painting (remembering the topic and criteria): Main Loop
I just loved this. It has great armorwork, yes - but I loved the mood and composition overall! It felt to me like the best overall painting of an armored fallen valkyrie.
    * If I had given myself another vote in this area it would have gone to Captain Nemo. Great great mood and clever take on the fall! One of those ideas that no one thinks of until they see someone else do it, and then everyone smacks themselves in the forehead for not thinking of it.

I'd also like to toss out a "cheers" to gunnarsson for the look and style of his piece! Very eye-catching and tight!

OK, that is my humble opinion. Thank you all for the inspiration!

you know, this time I did know a bit more of what i wanted.. At first i was going to put her in a situation with a stormier background, but when I blocked it in, this direction sprang out at me, so yeah, I knew more what I wanted to say.. thanks for your thoughts
