    --Sci-fi mish-mash--

    Hi CA'ers,

Finally have some downtime, so I thought I would post up some recent work. I also wrote a little mini-tutorial since people seemed to like the last one. More rambling than explicit instructions though I suppose...heh.

Anyways, hope you enjoy these (always open for feedback). Hope everyone's doing great!

Amazing work Daryl, as always. I was on your site yesterday and i couldn't make the images larger and that made me angry because the Ships in the Night piece is so sweet and i badly wanted to see it bigger.LOL! And here you are with this post.

    Thanks for the tutorial brother!

Again! Nice work Black, the Ships piece is inspired and I love the subtle sense of motion in the last image (that sucker looks tailor made for the folks at White Wolf Games).

The gun on the first painting gives me a grin, I can just about hear you going "needs something more...like a sword!"

Excellent work! One thing though, in the last one her left leg doesn't look attached to anything.

    yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah!!! really awesome.

looks like some funkyness going on with legs/hips on the last one, but nothing serious.

Amazing work as usual. And I really love the TUT format. Such a quick, clear read when it's all on one page like that (even if you think you're rambling).

I'm really liking the last one, Daryl! As far as your environments go, I think you've come to the point where they're just as strong as your characters (and that's saying a lot, seeing how great you are with characters) Props for the tutorial, too :]

    Hey, thanks guys!

I'm really glad you are getting something out of the tutorial.

Lone Wolf; you shoudl be able to make the images larger...that's weird. There is a a little 'download' button beside each pic that should open a larger version. If you have a pop-up's disabled it might not work correctly.

J May; hey John! yeah very white-wolfish isn't it? Gotta admit I like that gothic style.

Lord Dubu; Warhammer 40K is pretty cool. Some of their stuff I find a *bit* too over-the-top, but I think the overall vibe of their universe is great. What I like about it is how recognizable everything is - when you look at warhammer art, there is absolutely no doubt you are looking at warhammer art.

Troll Skelking; well, nothing to post right now...there is more art on my webpage if you are interested - www.mandrykart.com I have a lot of art I've done for work that I should be able to post later this year.

robinchyo; thanks Robin, that's a big compliment. I've been doing tons more environmental art lately, which is good because it was a weakness. I'll always love the character stuff though. =)

great rendering digital paint type stuffs here... the boobs and guns gets 'em every time... throw some chunky armor and edged weapons in there and you're gold baby!!!

anyway, you've got the digi paints down, but there are some crits i'd like to offer if ya dont mind...

first pic bg could use stronger graphic design or a simpler approach... but as is it's just taking away from the character.

second one has some depth issues.. it's looking really flat and the spatial relationships are unclear. maybe some subtle cast shadows from the ship on the ocean surface would help define where the boat is in relation to it. maybe also reserve the black blacks for the foreground to help you push the whole ship back with a lighter, more atmospheric pass like the underside has? i dunno, but having the same values in your extreme foreground and background as well as having the boat and ship share the same palette and value scheme is making it a hard read. cool tech look to the ship though.

3rd one has depth issues as well. the foreground character on the right is blending in with the tech behind him.. maybe some darker values overall and a strong rimlight would help pop him off. also, the naked mechanical woman thingy looks as though she's addressing the character holding the severed head, but her head and especially torso are tilted to the right away from him slightly (to show off her breastesses some more?? i dunno).

4th one down... deoth and composition are the weak points... the lights of the character are on top of the light areas of the robot, and the dark areas of the character blend in with the dark areas of the robot. you could use an orange rimlight from the robot's open neck to rimlight his lower body, popping it off the darks it's against and use a larger cutout/tech design on the robots chest that provides shadow for his lighter flesh tones to play against. just some suggestions... hope ya don't mind...
5th one... i would agree with the other comments on the anatomy stuff..

yeah man, you're consistently rendering stuff out great, but with some more attention to lighting and anatomy you would take your work to the next level.
