    Need Pricing Advice

Hey guys. I just need some good old fashioned advice.

Basically it's pricing. I never do illustration jobs so it's hard for me to know what the competitive pricing in the field is. So I have to illustrate a book for a friend. It's a small chicklet (a girlie fluff book).

    1. I need to design a cover

    2. Draw 8-10 small illustrations. Cartoony, stylish vector-like art.

    3. Lay it all out in InDesign. (about 100 pages)

    4. And also maybe one small illustration that goes between chapters.

For this whole job... how much would you guys suggest I should charge? Thanks for your help

    A couple grand, depending on:
How much work it's really going to be
How much time it's going to take vs. how much time you have
How good a friend this is, and how important the friendship is to you

Heh. This friend isn't a very close one but I would love to do this because it's fun and I hardly ever get illustration contracts.

The illustration style looks like I can definitely handle it. The time... I don't really have an idea but I have about 3 months to do it.

And btw thx Elwell for your speedy reply!

Oh yeah! Forgot. What about a cut? Like royalties or something? She's self-publishing it and it's going to be in black and white.

you know, if your friend doesn't have a big budget for your artwork, you can always license the rights to print on the book only, but you keep all rights to the images for you to use them on anything you want, like posters, prints, llimited edition prints, t-shirts, self promotion, etc.

I would think that in a situation like this it goes without saying that the only rights transferred would be for the book itself.
