    concept:

Kohajs are large carnivores that are very strong and rapid. They are also known as the Silver Tooth because of the small debris of silver stuck in their cavernous teeths. They have the habit of chewing the mountain rocks (highly dense with silver) after they eat in order to clean their disorganized rows of teeth from the meat. The Silver tooth eats rabbits, goats and even bears when it hunts in packs.

    Argyridents
Argyridents patrol and guard the entrances to the rich silver mines of the Blue Dwarves of Kimmolidjn. Swift, strong and highly agressive, few looters get past thier silver toothed maws and razor sharp claws. The Blue Dwarves use the Argyridents as steeds in battle, and Argyrident pups are prized as pets by the most affluent dwarf houses. Argyridents are especially good with children and fiercely loyal to the charges they protect.

A Recently discovered occult book dating from the early middle ages in what is now Hungary sheds some dubious truth to the legends of werewolves. In one particularly unwholesome passage it tells of a several hundred year plague of lycanthropy, a highly infectious disease of the blood which transforms humans into vicious murdering beasts under the light of the moon. Further, it tells of the eventual destruction of the werewolves and the eradication of the dreaded disease. The Silver Tooth was a species bred over many decades by the Monks of Aventur to combat the terror of werewolves. From the description it appears Silver Toothes stood 12 to 15 feet tall and had four powerfull apelike arms ending in prehensile paws to grasp their prey. Their namesake was their silver teeth with which they destroyed the vast population of werewolves. The monks kept their breeding methods secret but it is clear to scientists that the Silver Toothes themselves had lycanthropy in their blood and seem to be a mix of ape and wolf themselves. Bred only to attack and eat werewolves, the Silver Toothes eventually died out once their food supply was exhausted. One final passage hints of a hidden tomb where the Monks laid to rest the last of their creations. Scientists hope to discover this tomb and trace the genome of these creatures.

    Silver Tooth Boar
The Silver Tooth Boar was first discovered in 2006 by archaeologist Thomas Carter. He was exploring a remote plateau in the Andes when he stumbled across a small group of these creatures grazing. What caught his attention when he first noticed them was the over-sized, silvery tooth of the males.
Although having to leave sooner than he wanted after the boars initial discovery, Carter made a return trip the following year to study the rare creature. He observed the peculiar silvery look of the males tooth was from the constant rubbing on certain rocks in order to sharpen and shine the tooth. As with many other species, the male with the largest and shiniest tooth would attract more mates. However, the tooth would eventually grow so big that it would inhibit the males food intake, and they would slowly die of starvation. Unfortunately he estimated that only 3 to 4 dozen of the boars remained.

Some earth crustatceans collect mercury in their system. On this creatures world there is an abundance of silver in the ocean. This creature stores the silver a the sub-cutaneous layer in its extremeties and teeth. As the creature wears away the outer layer of its exoskeleton the silver begins to become visible. The creatures endless foraging effectively polishes the silver teeth and spines to a brilliant shine. The flashing glimpses of silver actually serve to lure small prey into its jaws and as it hardens over the years it adds extra protection to its body.

    concept:
    Fork-Lighting Shrike
The `Fork-Lighting Shrike` takes it's energy by intercepting bolts of fork lightning giving it heat and energy.
It evolved from a type of Electric Eel that took it's charge directly from Sea water. The Eel-like species ate Kelp as it's main food source and derived energy and heat from the electric charge it extracted from the sea water. Through Darwinian natural selection the species became more successful at charging itself by leaping from the water. Fins evolved into large fins which evolved into wing like appendages. The sea region that it evolved in was littered with pyrargyrite (a common ore deposit in that region) which it ingested as a type of ballast (no swim bladder had evolved). When the species became airborne it retained the pyrargyrite-eating habit which it scraped from cliff faces along the sea shore. Over several million years the most successful branch of the species had begun to exhibit signs of Silver deposits on it's canine teeth. This by-product of the pyrargyrite made it more susceptible to lightning strikes which occurred daily in the region. Very quickly in evolutionary terms the Shrike began to derive all its heat and energy needs directly from lighting whilst still taking some sustenance from the abundant Kelp beds.

The silver tooth is a creature that lives deep in the forest. They can grow to a size twice as big as a wolf and is the top predator where it can be found. They have very powerful jaws and their teeth are strong enough to crush bone. The silver tooth has become a rare species due to hunting, their silvery teeth is appreciated by humans and are used mainly for the making of jewelry.

    concept:

The latest species we found on Zeta 7 was not unlike that of crocodilians we have on earth.
Nicknamed Silvertooth due to the large lower tooth projecting from the jaw. This breed of reptile inhabits mineral/metal rich subterranean pools. Not white or lacking pigment it would seem that they do spend part of the day above ground.
The specialized tooth in the front of their lower jaw it would seem gets encased with metal deposits from the water... almost like an oyster this reptile spends the day spreading on thin layers of silver with its tongue. Slowly adding over time the layers and subsequently the size of its front tooth.
This it would seem has a threefold purpose 1. a hunting tool, the larger the tooth the more prey is speared, 2. as a weapon to fend off others, and 3. as well as a symbol of adulthood. Females being attracted to the males w/the largest and shiniest protuberance.
We are doing what we can to document these fabulous creatures as it would seem the ships main crew are turning into poachers. Collecting the largest of the teeth to be used in trade... and the meat from what we have come to understand tastes quite like chicken.

The infamous alchemist and magician Pretri Qula attempted to create a species of birds that was incredibly beautiful, modest and laid golden eggs. He failed. The creatures he created were the bloopis; ugly, thieving reptiles with wings that fed on silver coins, and they soon spread their mischief all over medieval Europe. Using their flying abilities they were able to sneak through the windows of households and dine on their favourite snack without anyone knowing.
It was said that the only redeeming quality of the bloopis was their teeth, since people believed them to be made out of pure silver. When one of them finally was caught it was revealed that the teeth only had a thin silver-coating due to their eating habits.
However, justice prevailed in the end when silver no longer was used to make coins. The bloopis starved and died out. Bummer.

    Mole Serpent
The Mole Serpent inhabits canyons and mountains. These's creature life revolves in creating deep tunnel systems in mountains, similar to ants. The high expossure to has created a layer of this element in the creature's teeth, some of its plates and on claws over the course of the creature's evolution, this has help to achieve better performing of the tunnels due to the strong factor that the teeth are composed partly by silver so are the claws which are use as a second element of digging. Since this creature is nearly blind it emits some kind of sound waves that later on rebound on its body, causing vibrations on the creature's plates, particalary the silver ones. This helps the creature know better what's around. The holes on the side of the creature is the auditive system of the creature. The tentacles on its back emits lights which are used mainly on the mating season, as a guide to other mates in the tunnels. Males have particular light patherns, being red and blue the main colors on their light. On the opposite sex is mainly green and blue.

the silver tooth of the ankroagh forest, is not the most mild mannered beasts! And this was perfect for the ankoragh foresters. For they had found a wealth of silver in the rocks of their forest. But neighbouring forces who would frequently demand bribes of money to keep their village "safe" were upping the price with every visit. The foresters knew that with such a lucky find of so much silver their loot would be found and they would lose it all. So, they devised a plan - they used the roots of certain plants to knock out the g'shabon beast or the forest. This beast is feirce and wild, there is no taming it, and the foresters sometimes were unlucky enough to encounter one, and not live to tell about it! So, they captured one and put their plan into action - they replaced all the teeth of the g'shabon with cast silver teeth, the perfect hiding place! Soon they would be able to tell the neighbouring forces where they could find such silver, knowing that no one in an encounter with the g'shabon would survive. It was the beginning of the foresters new wealth and independance!

The adage "Every cloud has a silver lining" has not always been meant to inspire hope. There once was a time when the phrase was taken as a grim warning by those who knew. The Silver Teeth of the Storm, as they were called, once plagued the lives of sailors unlucky enough to encounter them. Resembling a flying horse without rear limbs and partially composed of what must somehow have been living metal, herds of silver teeth rode the skies in search of sailing ships. Never far behind these flying herds were the thunderhead of storms. Scholars of the times conjectured that it may have been their metal composition that allowed the silver teeth to seemingly lead and drive the storms. Men at sea would have short warning of their arrival (be it from a silver flash in the sky or the ratcheting whinny of their call) before the clouds burst forth upon them. The silver teeth would snatch away any sailors thrown overboard by the storm, or feed freely if the ship were to capsize.

The Silver Tooth secretes the mineral through its teeth. There are two benefits to this:
    1. it strenghens the teeth enamal for attacking prey.
    2. the males attrach females, for breeding, depending on the lust of the teeth.

When a fat boar, an unknowing deer or for that matter a lost human is passing by the Silvertooth grabs his chance.
In no less then a split-second they jump out their hidingtree and throw themselves upon their prey.
Their secret lies within the special fur and teeth. Since theyre both incredibly white, reflective and shiney, the prey will simply get blinded by the lightintensivity.
Once blinded, the prey stands no chance... This because the Silvertooth, as natives call these kind of monkeys, have another weapon (besides their enormous jaws) to ensure their meal --> Their left "smashingarm".
This arm is held backwords while jumping, but when the struggle on the ground begins this ridiculously strong arm usually turns the tide towards the Silvertooth.

    not accepted entries:

All WIPs/sketches/not finished yet/placeholder/yaddayaddayadda images...AND (if not mentioned further) all entries which didn't pass the quality check

    Wasker
Oh man...so hard to reject this wonderful piece...reminds me of some classic oil paintings...please do another one for the next COW in this style!
For this one i have to reject it...though i accepted TOOLED! and specularts entries, even if they didn't implement a silver tooth in their creatures anatomy, i think a horn is too far away from a tooth...
I try to imagine how i would feel if i browse through the winner gallery and see a creature which one for the Silver Tooth round but has a horn made of silver but no tooth...i think i wouldn't be happy with that. Therefore i am really sorry, since i love the entry but i have to be honest to COW and myself (and you)

    close to rejection:

    TOOLED!, speculart
Actually i wanted to see creatures which has real silver teeth in their mouth instead of only being called like that. But as i wasn't clear in the very first post (later i was, but maybe it was too late for you) i turn a blind eye

    gnahz, Lewis
hard on the edge...next time more polishing and "quality" please

    special note:

    TOOLED!
next time only 1 image please

Really nice work, guys - I voted for Tooled 'cause I just loved the large front legs with skinny back legs - like a bulldog, but mostly, I love being able to see more little drawings that explain the creature's nature and background a bit more. (male - female etc)

I just think it would be even better if those extra drawings are included with the main drawing as one presentation.

Keep it up! Hope to join COW soon.

Cannibalcandy: Love the texture. As if done with oils and watercolor!

Tooled: Intresting design, like that you put a little fact sheet next to it

Penumbra: Great colors and concept but the eyes dont work for me at all.

Voted for Jakkas. The master strikes again! The creature is very believable, and the anatomy holds up very well. Im glad you included the tail, it's much better for it. I'm not really digging the "it is created" part of the story. But the pic holds up immensly well on its own. And I have to give you a compliment on the way you use the values in the background, they compliment the creature really well. Great stuff. Hats of to you. I think I have to give you the hat for this one actually.

Also big up to Penumbra and Tooled, they had great entries this round.

I voted for Southern... I really like the design of the head of his creature, especially the elctricity being conducted by it. I also like the distant shot of the creatures and the lightning... it gives me the feel that his creature is rare and only spotted when lightning strikes or something... really awesome....

Oh and Fozzy, was mine rejected because it was a sole creature not a species?? Sorry, I missed the last part in the additional rules... my first time doing one of these...

Hmm I should get my act together and actually finish my COW-attempts One more week and I'll have plenty of time...

Voted Jakkas, I really liked the image and the style, it reminded me of some of the dinosaur drawings I could spent hours staring at when I was a kid Only little crit is that the subject of 'silver teeth' isn't really clear from the picture alone.

    Some other favourites:
JFwalls:, I like the style but the creature and background are a bit static.
Penumbra: Very cool drawing, my favourite until I saw Jakkas's entry
TOOLED!: Very cool stuff, I especially like the female version. Could have used some real silver teeth though

I feel a bit sick with anxiety seeing my cruddy whale on the same page as penumbra and jakkas' beautiful creatures. My vote is going for Deftonys though, I really love the style of the picture and the baleful expression on his little face. Would love to know what effects you go through to get the ink illustration effect (maybe you do it in ink actually?)

For me it came down to Southern, JakkaS and SirJohanna. Ultimately I went with Southern, because of the cool concept of thunderaction with wings! Well executed too, even though JakkaS still has the tightest, anatomically most sound rendition, but we're used to that from him. So good job Southern - you got my vote!

Actually it was quality-wise not at the required level...and yes the single character rule would have struck in the second phase

Actually i liked your bw lineart, but you wrote that they were sketches so i thought that they are not final but WIPs...

I vote for jfwalls. It reminds me of some prehistoric rhino-like creature. Seems very believable as a land dwelling animal.

    Fozzy:
    1. Love ya
    2. You spelled my name wrong again (the poll)
    3. Go back to #1

Jakkas: Voted for you of course. It's one of the finest you've done in terms of subtlety I think. It's all the more bizarre for that reason. Simply awesome.

Yoitisi: Thanks, you're 100% correct with that crit. I had wanted to go back and do a view showing the creature in a more dynamic position, but I got caught up doing my EOW and ran out of time. I almost considered withdrawing, but figured I'd just leave it up.

Voting Jakkas...it just surpasses the feild in terms of quality, execution and believability. Also, as much as I love drooling maniacal creatures...I like the fact that he DIDN'T emphasize that and that the image is actually quite serene and innocent.

thanks for the kind words guys. i'll make sure that i really emphasize the requirments, just to make sure.

top picks for me are penumbra and jakkas, the finished product you guys came up with just blows me away. I am dissapointed that wasker didn't make it but , that doesnt change the fact of it being my fav.
truth be told, i am just so happy that i got a vote (first ever).

as for the vote, its gotta be jakkas. the believability is unparalled.
my hat is tipped good sir.

Well I found voting very very hard on this one.

I am in love with the image JakkaS created, clean, tight, crisp and dynamic. I really want to try and get my work to be more like this. In the end I stuck my cross in Penumbras as I loved the overall feel of the image.

I was also impressed and inspired by Tooled's entry, the detailed info helps define the beast more. Great work everyone!
