Yeah and to add to that, using color pencils on black paper is fun. The colors just pop out better. One thing you got to get use to is painting with light instead of shade. It's kind of like being in a pitch dark room, and turning on one light at a time. You can even fake a great neon effect... Which inspires me to use up all this old black construction paper, and make a make shift sketch book.

This guy does very photorealistic work and I think is sponsored by sanford who makes prismacolor pencils. I'm not sure about his methods, could be visual ref. or doing the grid thing. Nevermind the subject matter or the method, the end result is polished and it is incredibly hard to get this level of detail with cp.

the black paper drawings were all done with prismacolor pencils on black paper. en Plein air. some times they were finished from photos later but usually not. actually you want a little tooth to your surface. we have trouble getting black paper withh enouhg texture... so we use gesso with talcum powder. which is very fine but adds enough texture to hold the pencil

So does rougher texture make it easier to layer the pencils? And does gesso have to be used on a hard surface, or can it be used on brsitol, or card board?

(nervously raises hand from the back of the room) I use colored pencils for most of my artwork. I'm pretty much a beginner, though, but learning fast.

Also, check out this guy's work. http://www.howarddavidjohnson.com/

That guy's site is confusing, and his photo manipulations are hella cheesy.
