CHOW #69 - VOTING - Death's Horse
Last battle was a tie - two great winners yet.. i get to choose the topic.
I'm in a super hurry - i hope to be able to make the poll for the last topic in about 12 hours. Until then... please enjoy the new topic.
It should be pretty open. Go wild.
1 = Horse or.. derivated
2 = Death rides on it - or... you ride it when you die.. or.. something alike.
Make sure your picture contains these - you will receive 3 VOTES for each topic covered.
Please try to save your progress - maybe a nice tutorial is comming out.
BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. The host will make the selection.
(for the new people)
NOT ALL ENTRIES ARE TAKEN TO THE POLL.
(the selection is based on technical quality criteria)
ENTRIES NOT POLLED WILL RECEIVE C&C
(i really try to do this every time)
IT IS A DIFFICULT PROCESS - MISTAKES CAN BE MADE
I am trying to set this as a professional demand. I act as the client...
Oblio is always looking for feedback - If Oblio is wrong - tell him so.
DON'T VOTE FOR YOURSELF
I'm still really bussy - next weekend i might be totally unavailable. The next one remains open until i gae the time to do it.
I have no time to comment on the entries not taken to the pol - it would mean a lot to me if some of you woul dtake the time to comment on the entries.
We are rough here - but we are helpfull right ?
yayca - thank you so much for the understanding.
(i will get to the states sometimes next week - really limited time in SF but maybe we can hang out one evening. by the end of the month i'll be in paris too - let me know if some of you are around).
DON'T FORGET YOUR PRIZE! THE WINNER OF THIS ROUND WILL SELECT THE TOPIC OF THE NEXT ONE!
And will assist me in selecting the entries for the poll. In one week we'll have a new client.Vote him now

I have never participated in a CHOW before, time to change that. I'm in! Though I'm scared shitless before all the amazing talent here...
Everything in place! Now I just need to define things until my eyes bleed...
Realised that the lightning is too much of a focus stealer and played around with the layer options until I was happy. Plus, added more colors... monochrome is good, but I think it needed a bit of spicing up!

There is found, in some obscure manuscripts and ancient writings, mention of Death’s Steed. What these stories describe cannot be defined as a mount in the usual sense. The “Steed” is commonly placed in the company of the Harbinger of Death or the Grim Reaper, if you will. Traditionally speaking and in the most widespread tales the Steed is thought to bear only the depraved and the foul. In more ancient tomes the “Steed” takes on a darker and more enigmatic demeanor. In every pre-Christian reference (and at least one biblical reference) the steed is called “The Sifter” though it must be noted that in more than three instances it has also been titled the “Dog of the King in Yellow” and also the “Childe of Stillborn Sorrows”. Even the tales that place the entity with the figure of Death have led to some debate over its purpose and relationship. Take, for instance, its appearance in Dante’s Inferno( this is actually unverifiable as this particular portion of the text has been lost over the years):
In this scene the character of Death seems hesitant to summon the Steed:
Dante’ A.- Must we walk this night through? Have you no mount?
Death- Would you have me rise up Ol’ Sifter? Nay, I would not! There are none so evil in this Hell that they should ride upon his terrible form or even glance upon his wrongful skins!
The Sifter is referenced in only two other verifiable texts, the nature of which I am bound by non-disclosure and cannot speak directly of, but they amount to a Sumerian passage that refers to the Sifter by name then adds the phrase “mate of the black goat” and the last and oldest occurrence in a section of Hebrew work that states:
“The Thrones of God do not fear him, but they weep in his presence. Not for themselves but for mankind.”
An interesting side note: In 1922 a self professed psychic named Harry Tyler Edmund claimed to have channeled a spirit that spoke of the Sifter saying:
“He dwelleth in the fading whispers of the dreaming city”
Mr. Edmund then proceeded to attempt a drawing depicting the vision which he had seen while in the psychic trance. A year later, after having suffered declining health at odds with the treatments of local physicians, Edmund expired. He left only a small handwritten note that stated:
“Destroy it and that which houses it! Oh God it has risen through mine own sight!”
Mr. Edmund's image appears to be an "in progress" work but his housekeeper claimed that there was also a painting, though it has yet to be found. There is land record of a crate discovered under his residence when it was demolished in 1924.It was placed in storage for his surviving relatives but was never claimed. Documents confirm that it is still present in the county wharehouse. Perhaps a more thurough examination of the artifact will yield results.
Still in progress, but lightened a bit so you can see some detail.
and more progress...
This is the final piece, now bearing a depraved soul, thanks everyone for looking and commenting.

I've started on this...sooooo, i guess that means I'm in. Consider this a placeholder
Here's my wip, don't know if the details can be made out because photobucket resizes images above 800x600
Wow, my time was taken up by work this week and subsequently my CHow came out shitter than usual, not up the standard I would have liked painting-wise as well as backgroundless. I guess I'll enter it anyway *sigh*

cool stuff penumbra, looking forward to seeing it finished!
here's my crap...
my idea was that the horse is a vessel for transporting the souls, which are bound to it and fused inside for the journey, though in their state of unrest they try to escape the flesh of their carrier.
below is the original done in pencil, gouache and ink

Here's my preliminary sketch.

Place holder. Couldn't resist - a topic about a HORSE?? I am so in.
By the by...what are the rules about collaborating with another artist? For example, I can't paint worth dickens, but my pal can. So is it okay if I draw it and she paints it? If that's a disqualifier, can I still post it anyway? I don't care if it goes to vote - in fact, if collaborating is a no-no, PLEASE do not take mine (ours) to the polls. I'd rather not ruffle anyones feathers.
All right, my WIP. Hopefully Skrunchey can do painter magic with my scribble.
Skrunchey's started her painter magic. We'd both welcome crits as we go along...

No time for full color this time, but I somehow doubt it would make much difference. The amount of high quality entries this week is staggering. You guys tore it up!

There is a bare and barren land which bridges life and death. There, tattered mists twine around broken trees, and the souls of the newly dead toil, bent and wandering over the lifeless earth. Their trudging pilgrimage is drawn - like a magnet, to one place - a vast, creaking carousel in the middle of this deserted land. The carousel is tortuously constructed, and infinitely huge. Ranks and ranks of horses, built from bone, wood and tattered cloth, spit and snarl from their rotting posts.
Legend has it that this incongruous carousel was built by a god, half demented with grief after the death of his mortal child, in the darkness before the morning of the world. The carousel turns endlessly, creaking and splintering under its own, ancient weight. It acts as a gateway to another place. The horses of wood and bone bear the wretched souls of the dead away.
ATAnderson - thanks for comments and help really like your different take on the subject - he's pretty scary...
Bumskee - love your entry - its so inspiring but simultaneously completely demoralizing for an amateur like me...bah
rodrigo - really like the idea of the souls being trapped inside the horse, and your expressive composition
dragonsnail - looks so professional and dramatic. Glad you took bluefooted's advice re: the 'tattered-ness'
teigrob - really like that subtle painting

Would you have me rise up Ol’ Sifter? Nay, I would not! There are none so evil in this Hell that they should ride upon his terrible form or even glance upon his wrongful skins!
WIP: Some changes in the sketch with skin texture, to make it look a little sicker, and form, too make it look more horse like and less dragon like.
Had to finally let this one go. Wish I had more time to work on it, especially the skin, but oh well. Work and family tomorrow, no time to paint.
Hmmm...the background ended up all wonky. Weird, doesn't look like that until I post it. Oh well.

first of all i have to say damn theres good artist in here... mad probs to everyone ^^
penumbra give as a real good story many started work on that point of wiew
but that text was not the instructions to this "job" but the stuff what was needed to be done was death's horse AND death (penumbra it isn't butting you down or anything... for now your work is best and most imaginative my vote goes to you ^^)
i didnt want to get focus from deaths so i made death litle bigger and big ego so big guy an so on.. hes/her precense is so huge and stuff like that...
we'r not having human in deaths coat... something "different" so thats why he/she is so big
story for the horse and death at the same time:
people say that eyes are the road to peoples soul... dead people dont have soul so neather do these fellows... and if there is road to soul then there cant be road there if there isn't nothing to go... thats why horse doesn't have eyes.. death doens't have face.. just form ...human like form
there is little stuff that makes difference in horce... skin there isn't one... just muscles... bridle is comming from piercings from horses muzzle. hoof's are claw like thingies... little stuff so it's reconicable...
in my mind they are hollow like thingies... empty inside and thats it i hope you like it ^^ peace, love and understanding

The Creation of Equidamortis
Death cast his eye across the plains of Hades, recalling the eternity of souls that marked his passage to this moment, and foresaw the bitterness of a solitary eternity yet before him. Then he bent his will to the dust and ashes of his domain, calling forth fire and adamantine and the swiftness of flight, the valor of warriors, the vision of sages, the loyalty of blood kinship, and they danced and swirled and took form under his spell: Equidamortis, Bearer of Death, greater by far than any living creature, yet not alive, for nothing living could long bear his master's company.
Death looked upon his mount and the burden of his task was eased. Across the world, his shadow was lifted for a moment, and mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters wept their thanks for the birth of Death's Steed, for their loved ones had been spared for a time.

This is my final. Inspired just a bit by Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series, in which primal entities were given human emotions and concerns, making me think how lonely Death might become. C&C welcomed.

"Everyone knows there is no such thing as THE grim reaper, its A grim reaper, as the deadline corporation employs many Grim as reapers (Radical Executions & Aquisitions Persecutors), however if there is one reaper who by reputation could be called The reaper, it would be Ded,
for Ded it is only natural that everyone should pay their Tax (read: their soul.) he takes no excuse, makes no exceptions and is merciless and ruthless to those that try to avoid or bribe their way out of it. Ded is a celebrity.
as Such Ded was recently noticed by the board of directors of Hell Industries (deadline corporation's parent company.) and has been assigned the task to lead the Bikers of the Apocalypse to make sure the apocalyptic tax-rises are paid properly, swiftly and painfully.
Ded (sometimes wrongly spelled as Death.) is truelly a blessing in these troubling times of Life enlongment and massive reproduction."
- Dr. UrenTeller, great librarian.
Time's up and Im generally tired. tough there's so much more Id want to change/enhance, however you gotta say stop sometime
one random tought tough... isnt death supposed to be riding a pale horse (and the black one belongs to faminine ?) not critisicm really, I do realise black suits death better in this day and age, just a curious remark
lovely stuff in here, as always comments in the poll.

I hope I have enough time!!
Doing this with colored pencil and a little paint.... so medieval.
April 29th, 2007 #27
Born in the depths of Death's demonic den, Hell has honored his horrid hide with this terrible, torrid task. This steed's strength is stripped from our soul's collected corpses carried by his malevolent, malicious master. Death fears none but the day his deadly ride realizes his right and destroys Death himself.
MOOHA HA HA HA!!!!

It's been ages since last time I could do the CHOW (damn finals and examinations!). I really didn't have time to do this one either, but I just can't resist topics that involve death and the macabre.
Penumbra - My favourite so far.
rodrigo! - I really want to see this one finished.
I tried to convey a sickly mood rather than a dramatic one for this image.
I would have worked more on it, but I didn't have enough time.
