    MrArmadillo- watch me progress

    Hi everyone!!!

After posting a few things in the C&C boards, I got some very very useful tips, and above all, suggestions to practice painting from life.

So here is hopefully a bunch of my practice paintings! I suppose each counts as a speed painting. (<1hr?)

The mobile on the right looks awesome.
But what's that on the left? Another mobile or an electric razor?
Serously, it's getting harder and harder keeping them apart from each other,
but that's not your fault. xD

This is already a pretty good start, so I'll keep an eye on your thread.

I tried painting an apple. It didn't work out so well. So I ate it.

Got an mp3 player at Fry's; 1GB for $49.99. So I painted it.

here is one completely without reference... i thought i'd just go for it without sketching anything out or anything. Its really really loose but i'm trying to take the advice of thinking in shapes and stuff. anyway... at least the thumbnail looks good!

Those phones look tight. I'm going to try one of those as a study once I'm into color...sometime...in December. Meh, go for B/W!

That one without reference is cool but not if you were trying to be realistic. You gots some good speedpaints, keep going!

    BAH

by far the most difficult one yet. Couldn't get the colors right and the shape got wacky.... I think it's cuz it's still day and theres just a bit of blue sunlight from the window to the right.

i'm so impressed with your paintings!!! very good idea, i think i'll try the same (small still lifes in digital paint). that tape looks photorealistic. as for the face without ref, try practicing new things with like that in your most comfortable medium, like try to draw faces from imagination well before trying to paint them so you can just focus on shape, proportions and volume without worrying about color or rendering. best of luck, you have talent

Whoa, your last two pics look great! the tape, especially!!! And I know the old man picture was a quickie, but I have to say it -- the ear's way too low

Spiffy work though.. keep it up!!!

Holy crap at the tape & mp3 player. They look like photos basically. Fantastic!

For the non-reffed person, if you were trying to make him look realistic, the ear is wayyy too big, and should be higher up, between the eyes & nose. & his forehead is far too big. Good attempt though, nonetheless.

Hi all! thanks for the comments.

(As for the face, it really wasn't an attempt at realism.)

So when do i start using these observations from life in imagined work? These still life paintings come pretty easy, but drawing from nothing is an entirely different story!

I plan on doing tons more of these; I'm not sure what exactly it is I'm learning but i'm sure it's a lot.

Also, my real real interest (as of now) is definitely in environment concepts. There is nothing more inspiring to me than a detailed matte painting of a world impossible outside the imagination. What can I do to get a better foundation in that area? I believe I have a firm enough understanding of perspective and light and shadow. What I'm asking is, where do I begin?

    Uber-cool staplers 8) Nice work!

I'm no enviro expert -- this is just my two cents -- I'd say just go start sketching stuff. Rooms, yards, parks, landscapes. Sketch from the world around you (or I guess w/a laptop, PS the world around you) and when you've nailed that, expand on it.

Really nice object paints! the tape and stapler are awasome!
It's scary jumping to painting more complicated things like whole
scenes but I guess the only way to do it is to jump right in.
I look forward to seeing more!

looks like i like a brush

just outside the Fulton's Farmstead it buried itself, laying down a beacon not a mile away.
