    torsos sketches, from ref.

I still feel like I'm sometimes just copying what I see, rather than analysing and understanding what's going on... need to try harder... need to be more confident with lines.... values need to be pushed more and in the right places...

Hi Nismo. Well done for all the anatomy studies and figure drawing.

Nice heads with the musculature and from different angles. Though generally I think you elongate them a bit too much though as the eyes should be pretty much in the middle.

I dig your animals, especially the recent rinos. They show your strength with proportion and crosshatching. Especially with the rino I like the strong lighting with the shadow areas underneath really contrasting from the light on its back - try to bring those lessons into your imaginative work.

I also like the portrait in post 56. It's nice the way your blocked in the shadows and structure and i like the punches of colours (yellow and pink) at the hair line and in the shadows.

Re: your recent posts comments about 'value' ; It's all about comparison. You have to ask questions like "Is this area darker than that area? Is this the darkest tone there is, is this the lightest?" and compare each area to the overall image, rather than just to it's local section. ie: look at the simple large shapes of tone and render then in first, then go to the details. A lot of people will be focusing on a muscle and render it with their full value range, and then move to the next section and do the same, rather than looking at the other all pattern (try to squint and see it as simple continents of shade on a map). Don't be afraid to shade over an area of your image if the reference calls for it. Also don't be afraid to push those darks as much as possible - you might have to readjust all the other tones, but try and find an area in the reference that is the darkest and block it in as dark as you posisbly can with your pencil and use that section as a comparison to adjust all the other tones. Because we're normally drawing on white paper, it's easy to let everything be too light and not make the most out of the natural tonal range.

Good work - Keep it up!

Puck: Thanks very much for those comments. I see what you mean about the heads. It's something I hadn't noticed as a consistent mistake. I hope that drawing more from life and more studies will help to fix this. Thanks for spotting it!

I'm glad you liked the portrait. I also like those areas of more saturated colour on the edges of the shadow. It seems that these areas are often more 'punchy'.

Regarding the values: I definately have a habit of rendering individual areas without referencing the entire image. I also often apply successive 'coats' of value over the image, gradually working the really dark areas and hopefully leaving the right contrast between light and dark. It's probably better to try and drop in the correct values in one pass. I lack this confidence I think... Practice........

Once again, cheers for taking the time to post those comments! They made me think more about my art!

Here are a couple more pencil renderings for tonight

The shadow around her left boob is too dark compared to the rest of the image... as is the rim-shadow around her shoulders.

The values are a bit more in synch in this one...

    G'night

    wanzers

    Just noticed the Portal smiley:

So cool.. what a great game! You should definitely check it out if you haven't already...

here are some very rough robot life drawings... from the model wanzer on my desk..

not too happy with these... perspective is all wrong
i just eyeballed it. Its hard to get the perspective right when all the limbs and armor are rotated to different angles... any tips?

Also, it the model is too close then each eye gives a very different angle, so have to look at the model with one eye

    Mgs

Thanks for the dropping by guys, and for the comments!

Ok, over the weekend I completed Metal Gear Solid, Sons of Liberty, and Snake Eater. Was great to get back to these games. The original MGS for the PS1 still looks impressive, as the colours and lighting still read really well. The sequel still has these smooth, crisp textures and still looks gorgeous, 6 years on... I found it harder to get into Snake Eater (MGS3) from a visual point of view after this as the jungle setting has less of a stylistic feel and is more realistic looking. However, the character design is still spot on, and the ludicrously over-the-top acting and plot with so many twists more "deus-ex-machinas" than you can shake a PSG-1 at is still there.. Not forgetting the fantastic showdown with the Shagohod.

ANyway, after playing all this I had to get this out of my system (ref is the Yoji Shinkawa art book):

Keep up them studies! The muscles really have volume in them. Many of the heads you draw are very long though. The bodies also have strange proportions. Try studying some human proportions. There are links all over the web. Portrait-artist.org has a nice tutorial on proportions.

Long time no see! You've made some excellent progress since I last saw you; I especially love the painting of the stomach. Keep it up!

You can be the best at what you do, but you've never learned everything about anything.

Good on you for continuing your sketchbook. Your photoshop paintings look great - good warm vs cool colours.

Show me more and I'll be happy!
