    thetempest's sketchbook (NUDES)

    Hello,

First up I would like to apologise for my existence when next to such truly amazing artists as those that post here. I have been lurking for a while but have never posted, what i'm looking for really is some harsh, honest criticism and hopefully some pointers too.

I am a Graphic Designer who gave up painting for coding about 4 years ago... I am trying to move out of techy stuff and back to illustrative work and hopefully eventually concept art so anyway heres some pics:

K well it's been a bit quiet on here so i'm just going to add some stuff and see if anyone would like to comment, anything appreciated!

A few self portraits done on the train:

    Portrait in Photoshop from mirror:

and from a photo...looks a bit fan art, don't like it:

    And a few creatures...

oh yeah and my cat.....I'm not a mad cat lady though:

Any suggestions for improvement or maybe subject matter? I hear a lot about levels but don't really understand what is meant by that (is it the saturation at different points of depth?)

hey there you got some preety nice stuff, but you should keep drawing from life and ref photos to improve your observational skills and hand eye cordination.

    keep it up

first of all, im right there with you; im currently an IT guy trying what he can to get back into the art aspect of the career world...

coming from your critique post with the imp; you stuff looks great, you're color work is definitely strong (but not without room for improvement... that's why you're here, right!)

don't stop submitting, i'm interested to see your style grow

    Thanks very much for feedback!

I have taken a few peoples advice on this one and tried some quicker studies focusing on observation....so some self portraits. Note the constant look of constipated concentration!

thought i'd try a portrait using large brushes to stop myself getting overly detailed:

10 minute black and white to try and work on lighting:

and a 45 minute sepia thing with light at a different angle:

I think sepia is best likeness which is encouraging as was last one i tried so i hope i'm getting a bit better. I find vanity can get in way of accuracy so have been trying hard to be objective and not put makeup on!

would love any more feedback you guys might have!

    Ta muchly

    Hello

I'm a lurker too, haven't put anything up yet, just checkin it out. Nice self-portraits! I can't draw mine, have tried.

I'd like to add a crit if that's ok?:

I'm always drawing faces, and you seem to be doing what I used to and (correct me if I'm wrong) but you seem to be a bit timid about making your faces project out, they look slightly flatter than they should, like the nose and chin.

It plagued me for years, same as colour, I just couldn't let myself go was always making myself pull back. To get over it though, and because I found it fun, I started doing caricatures and that way I'm intentionally making the features exagerrated and I found that I was pushing it as far as I could and finding I could go further and it would still look in proportion (and funnier), then when I went back to realistic portraits I wasn't as restrained.

Leonardo deVinci's a good reference, check out his caricatures if you have the chance.

Hope that helps and thanks for listening

edit: (suggestion) also you could try just doing profiles as an exercise as well
