About the stepdaughter, you're exxagerating and sharpening all her features. I do this too. Tone it back a bit and smooth things out. Soften her cheeks, and rework her chin. It's larger and should be centered symmetrically beneath her mouth. Your aunt-in-law is looking good! Make sure not to make the space between nose and mouth too big.

Worse than that, TASmith! I skewed her face in entirely the wrong direction, and I just couldn't see it, no matter how hard I looked, until I handed the darned thing over!

I've checked and double-checked and triple-checked the one I'm working on now to make sure I don't do it again. No sense in making mistakes if you don't learn from them...

I wondered what my husband's aunt would have looked like when she was younger. I didn't meet her until she was in her late 60s/early 70s. So I did a couple of doodles. Don't know if they're accurate or not.

I liked all the wrinkles and character of your husband's aunt. It's a fun exercise to see the past, usually that's why I have dusty mirrors.

I didn't think it was possible to be called an artist when you have nothing to say. It's like being a writer who publishes individual words as books and expects to be praised for it.

Did/does she read? Shelves of dimly lit books would look great in the background with a few knick-knacks.

I chickened out and just filled in with burnt umber. Still a WIP... softened the hardest of the lines

Don't think she reads a lot, Black Spot, she used to be more of a gardener.

Your stepson's daughter turned out really well and the WIP on your husband's aunt is also looking good. Can't wait to see it finished.

My favourite bit are her teeth. So many people get them wrong and you've got them perfect, like a real person's.

Not sure. Pattern the curtains and put some knick-knacks on the window sill to balance the composition. i think the background should be fairly even in tonal value to not take away from the main subject.

She's at the seaside with a bucket and spade. She actually looks happy in this one and not scary at all.

    Still struggling with "Auntie"

I've had her face to a point where I liked it a couple of times, but there's been much sucking of teeth from husband and "Ooh, I don't know if she'll like that."

Maybe I should give her bubble bath instead?

I think a lot of her lines are too dark. Her skin is more crumpled than deep lined. Does that help?

Hi Alesoun! Great progress on the painting...I agree about the contrasts and also I think her forehead cuts back at a sharper angle than you currently have it (so her head looks slightly slanted). Throwing some darker values in around the eye area (particularly the pupils) might make the mouth less of a focal point, too. It's a tricky image that you're working with--kind of looks like she's about to smile but not quite there. Maybe if you fudge reality a bit...make her eyes smile a bit more? Can't wait to see how it progresses.

Tried to soften the lines. The reds aren't as red irl as they look to me on the screen. Don't know if it's my monitor or something to do with the flash.....

    Still a way to go.

Very nice! One thing that is bothering me however is that the edge of the window seems to be running tangent to the side of her cheek, which makes the depth field feel awkward. Maybe you could extend the window a little bit in either direction to see what happens?
