Hey Alesoun. I see your name around everywhere, almost as much as The Grandmassa, well not that much, and I finally had some time to sift through your book. Great studies, very entertaining. Thanks.

    Pandora the Explorer?

    Grandma; spooky...... !
PetiteI made your right jawline a little too straight, but I'm glad you like it.

Jigje Thanks for looking. I've been noticing your SPs around. You're really getting a grip on them in a very short time.

Yep! She's beautiful and she has my eyes (they just haven't seen as much)

I'm building the idea, slowly. Putting in some foliage and background, but I don't want too much. Even if that's a bad choice, I just want to indicate the background....

    Ooookaaaaay!!

I'm not going to take this any further forward on this particular board because the fabric IS seperating from the board. There are a few things I'll want to change on the final effort, but a lot of stuff I want to keep, too.....

Damn it to Hell and back again! I spent a couple of hours today re-doing the sketch on a new board. Finished the sketch, put on a wash and it came up in blisters again!!!!!

It's not as if I'm soaking the board. The wash was thin, but not runny. I must have got a faulty batch of boards. I still have two left, but I'm not inclined to try them again.

Oh, well, Grandma, like you said, I got to experiment at least.....

Okay. This is what I have, and I'm transferring it to plywood that'll be primed and gesso'd tomorrow. I think the design is a little better and more refined..... which is more than I can say for the board.

Letter of complaint going off tomorrow.

Hey alesoun, thanks for the comment in my sketchbook! Your latest painting is looking really nice so far; I can't wait to see it finished. I particualarly enjoy the yellow/purple color scheme. It's also really exciting to see how much the pose of the figure has developed since your thumbnail in post #368. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for looking, Dierat and JHR. I don't know what made me pick the yellow and purple. I guess that once I decided she wasn't going in a cave I might as well have her out in the sunshine.

Still faffing around with Pandora. It's been a kind of disastrous couple of days, so I haven't primed and gesso'd that board, but this one's holding up better, so I may not need to....

It's developing very nicely. I really like the lavender bush. Just wondering if the helix should go from light to dark instead.

I didn't think it was possible to be called an artist when you have nothing to say. It's like being a writer who publishes individual words as books and expects to be praised for it.

Ooh...I love how she's coming along! Such a shame about the boards. If it's too late for this crit, please disregard, but the only thing that slightly bothers me is the path of the helix. I feel like it might read better if we see it emerging from the box hollow through her arms and up from there. Also, my eye wants to follow her gaze, and the helix extending to the right side of the canvas kind of fights that natural path...I wonder if the helix had a more upward trajectory if it would work better in terms of composition? Again, totally disregard if you're past that stage--I love where you're taking this regardless.

Now there's no doubt it's DNA. That was a worthwhile remake, it's looking so much better and it's not even finished. You're persistent, hard working and don't seem to be discouraged by failure. I think I have a lot to learn from you on that.

I feel a bit bad posting without artwork, but the past couple of days have been crazy, one way and another, and it looks like that's going to continue for the next couple of days; some of the "crazy" is good stuff, some not *looks around for a cat to kick*. It'll pass, though....

Black Spot, I tried the helix all the same value, and darkest at the top on greaseproof paper. Same value was boring and darkest at the top was kind of squashing the image down, if that makes sense. I just don't have the skill to make it work. I know what you mean, though. I could see it in my mind's eye, but I just couldn't execute it.

Courtyard, I slapped some pva on the board after it started to blister, and that seems to have stopped it getting worse. You have a point with the helix coming up between her arms, though. It would make a better shape. A little (okay, a lot) of Titanium White and I might be able to try that.

I'm actually past the point of worrying about the competition and more into thinking about what I can do with this. The helix is a bit stark on its own and I'm wondering about three butterflies. (One large, two small)

Grandma, you know what a chicken I am about pushing contrasts. I think I'm starting to get there, but the dress is going to give me problems. My model was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, so I'm winging it on the drapery.

Leonor, thanks. I'm stubborn, hard-working, and juuuuussssstttt don't know how to quit!

OOoh this is becoming pretty good, Alesoun!

Right now the eyes are lead off the canvas in the upper right corner though, at least mine ended up following the DNA out there. Might change when you get more of the lady done though? And she looks really good, btw

Wow, that's looking great. I love that your Pandora is happy, almost hopeful, about what she's releasing into the world. The colors really contribute to that overall mood, too.

Oh nice I like it, but didnt immediatly recognize it as Pandora untill I read the description. But I like where it is going, and hopefully will recognize it soon. Keep it up!

That’s okay about already trying it. I’m amazed that you can reproduce it so well on the second canvas. Are those dock leaves in the foreground, because they’re looking good as well? I’m trying to kill my garden at the moment – bind weed, ground elder, brambles, thistles etc.

Grandma, thanks, but I don't RROOOOOOCCCCCCKKKKK as much as you do!

Black Spot, they surely are docken leaves. She's kind of a fertility goddess, and nothing multiplies faster than weeds. I have a jungle of a garden to prove it. I find that if I've drawn something once I can generally reproduce it again fairly quickly because I've already made the mistakes once. Of course, there's always the danger of new mistakes, but that's what makes it fun.

Courtyard, I feel like the colours are happy colours, too.

Duq, I'm hoping that what I'll do next will get the Pandora idea across a little better. I'm going to double the double helix back on itself so that it ends where Pandora is looking. I've indicated it below on the old, first pic, but I'll make the curves sweeter.

But the double helix on its own is sort of boring, so I've decided to collage on it. I'm going to cut words with good and bad associations from the newspaper and pva them on the curves of the dna shape, then mess about with the double helix over and around the words. Maybe even have some flutter down. I'll give it a trial on the first pic first.

Should have tried it today, but I haven't had the space to work

Anyway, I'll be building on this....
