The skull I tried to post didn't show up on here; and it's always annoyed me. So I'm posting this just so that some image shows opposite my sketchbook. Hope it works:

Trying to start a sketchbook. I've been looking at the anatomy study on here, and thought I'd try a skull. I'm so rusty that after two attempts where EVERYTHING was skew-whiff, I wimped out and used a grid. I've left the grid in so that it's obvious I "cheated"

If I go Advanced, I just get an "Error on page" when I try to add an attachment. I swear this PC is laughing at me!

Nice sketchbook. My favorites are the dogs and the skull studies. Need more life drawing and anatomy studies in here tho. Keep at it.

Thanks, Envisor. I haven't drawn or painted for a very long time; but now that I've started again it's like rediscovering some part of me that's been missing. I'll try to sketch something every day,- and I may post some pics of that rat's skull tomorrow, and maybe see if I can build some sort of creature on it.....

    Random stuff

Well, I was too busy to sketch yesterday, and woke up with a migraine this morning which meant I couldn't see anything but zig-zags for a while.

I did these this afternoon, though; all (except the dragon-thingy) from photos in a magazine. They were all going to be pencil drawings, but I just couldn't resist the colour of the baby birds' beaks, so they're pencil and coloured pencil..

    Beltane

Tried to do studies of my own hand today, but the phone kept ringing and the doorbell, too; so I kept having to move.

Anyway, I remembered that it was Beltane, when the "Old Hag" of Winter gives way to the "Bride" of Summer,- it's a fertility thing,- and so I started playing around with this. Not sure if it's working, though.....

Thanks for the support in my sketchbook.

I like the German Shepherd studies and the lastest BELTANE did you use reference or is it from the head. I think once you can consolidate your time you will really be about to dedicate your full energy into your art.

From what I see here the rust is peeling off rather steady so unless your were one of the greats when you stopped your work is back on the path.

hope that we both improve greatly this year. keep at it.

Oh, I'm sooo excited about this one........

......but I think I'll fall flat on my face attempting it; so any crits, tips hints, etc would be greatly welcomed!

After I posted the Beltane sketch I had the idea for the Hag/Bride in a "Janus The Doorkeeper" pose. I've sketched out a grid for proportions, then messed around a little with the proportions on both faces.

The Hag, being older, has a slightly shorter forehead than the Bride. Her nose is thinner, and, because I thought she'd be toothless, her lips are thinner and her mouth is sunken. I'm also trying to give the impression that her skin is sagging and loose,- especially round the jaw and neck.

The Bride's eyes are larger and set lower; the lines of her face are smoother, her skin is tighter, and her neck is smooth. I'm going to fudge out the ears, unless somebody has a good idea as to how I can cope with them; at the moment, I think it would be too ambitious for me....

I've jacked up the black to let you see the lines,- on the real sketch they're really faint just now. I'm really fired up about doing this one, but the light's bad here now and energy saving bulbs ain't all they're cracked up to be, so I'm leaving it at this stage until tomorrow!

    Thanks for looking!

Nico, I'm sorry, I was so excited about posting that, I didn't answer your question, The only reference I had for the Beltane sketch was a quick look in a mirror to see just how my ear was set on my head.

I haven't used any refs for the Janus-type sketch yet; but that's not to say I won't if I hit trouble with it......

Thanks for taking time to look here.

    Update

I've done a little more work on the Hag/Bride sketch today. It's not finished yet, and to be honest, I don't really know what I think of it myself. All crits/suggestions welcomed.....

I'd be grateful, too, if anybody could tell me why my lines are showing as a series of dots on the pics I've scanned. The scanner's only a few weeks old, so I don't think the blame can lie there

Still working on the Hag/Bride idea. Came across some pics of my daughter when she was much younger, doing the usual little girl things,- smelling flowers, doing handstands, pulling her dress over her head.

I have the nasty feeling, though, that they'll look as if I'm joining the dots to make a magic drawing. Dunno what I'm doing wrong with this scanner....

    Anyway,

Something looks really off about the brides eye see how the hag's eye is in profile but the brides eye seems to be more str8 forward.

It should be more eliptical buddy. Not like O but more 0 see .....

Alot of your work is too small to really see, but alot of it looks pretty good so far. Draw from life, and let those drawings allow to make their experience appear in both your skill and the aesthetic of your work. keep going!

    Oh, my brain hurts!

Oooh! It's been a long day today!

Nico, you're right about that eye. I'll try this again in a different medium at some time in the future and try to correct it then. I think I need to put more work in in anatomy before I attempt it again, but, hey, it's all a learning process....

ChaoticKnight, in Scottish parlance, I'm a numpty when it comes to computers. I don't know how to make my pics bigger while keeping to a 400by 600 pixel formula. I seem to have done it once; but that was by accident.... (BTW, never use the term "numpty" to a Glaswegian; it's a derogatory term, and can only be used affectionately if you know the person very well,- on the other hand, I AM a numpty {idiot} on a pc!)

I did some work on a fox's skull today. The back view was working well, but I overdid it, and I'm not pleased with it. I did try to do an underview, but it was too much; I was going cross-eyed trying to make sense of what went where, so I chickened out. I'll try again in a few days with ink and wash and see if I can do that better.

Did some doodles to unwind in front of the TV as well....

Thanks to both of you for looking in, though, and if you can tell me how to deal with the sizing issue, that would be great

alesoun... you need to work the contrast and levels for your scans! they are really difficult to see... and hand studies are coming up soon, so you're already ahead of the curve.

Novenus; I'm still finding out how to adjust the contrast and levels on this scanner; haven't used it for drawings until I came on this site. I'm trying, though..... I'll get back to work on the anatomy drawings soon; promise!
