    Questions for CA

    Hi everyone,

I'm doing a career project for an English class, and the career I chose was concept artist. That being said, I'm required to interview someone from that field. But I've been so impressed with this website as a whole, I'd figure I'd interview anyone and everyone that cares to answer my questions. It doesn't matter to me if you are actively in the field or not. So if you've got a spare moment, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I'll ask one question at a time.
    First one?
How did you become interested in this career?

Um... moving on. What type of person would make a good concept artist?

Try PMing a few artists directly for this, Rythmus.

I think you are awesome, and I wish you the best in your endeavors, but I am tired of repeating myself, I am very busy with my new baby, and I am no longer a regular participant here, so please do not contact me to ask for advice on your career or education. All of the advice that I have to offer can already be found in the following links. Thank you.

Perspective 101, Concept Art 101, Games Industry info,Oil Paint info, Acrylic Paint info, my sketchbook.

Good advice. I didn't know if that would be a bother or anything.

Additionally you can post your entire list of questions here - who knows someone might come and answer all of them. I will if you buy me a wooden penny.

What got you interested in concept art?

A few years ago when I was in high school a friend introduced me to 3d an I immediately took to it. It then dawned on us that many of the modelers out there were very capable with a pencil as well. We started looking around for drawing inspiration and stumbled upon the works of Wes Burt and Sparth. Wes and Sparth's work changed my mind from 3d to concept design.

What kind of person would make a good concept artist?
Luckily you don't need to fill a whole list of requirements. What you want to have is the determination and open-mindedness to grow and learn and the passion to create.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of being a concept artist?
To me it's working for a client (drawback) and not working for a client ie doing your own thing (benefit).

How did you prepare for this career?
Still busy preparing (the learning never stops). But what I have done so far involves drawing on a daily basis and learning from people who are way more skilled at this than I am.

What do you enjoy most about being a concept artist?
The freedom: I can do space marines one day, zombies the next and fine art design thereafter. I'm able to escape reality and deal with it through art. It has also granted me many many awesome friends and opportunities. Most of all, it helped me grow as a human being and there will not be a day without growing or learning something new.

hope this helps and I hope more peeps give their 2c as well. I'll be expecting that wooden penny in the mail...

To throw in another question, how did you break into the industry?

Agreed. This industry seems so unique, so creative. It's exciting hearing more about the inner workings of it.
