What is the appeal of these particular gel pens? I've always known gel pens in general to ink intermittantly so I've considered them worthless compared to rollerball or felt tip pens.

The big deal was that they were the only ball-point(to my knowledge) which did not bleed when used with alcohol based markers(otherwise you would end up using a stadeler or sakura felt-based technical pen). I also have heard of some people using these pens with water to create a sort of water color effect.

I'm not sure if they are still being made, but another nice japanese pen to sketch with is the Zebra Jimnie Light.
