whatever your opinions on the ongoing effort in iraq, this guy's stuff really inspires for the sheer determination it must require...

I think his emotion is very inspiring. I don't think the art is very special unless you know the context.

Harvey Dunn did some of this back in his day as well, some really amazing work. He even fashioned a spool that attached at his waist so that he could keep drawing without looking for more paper.

A current guy doing the same thing in Iraq is Steve Mumford, you should check his stuff out too.

i thought most of the art was quite cliche and pretty stiff. if i was under fire i'd probably be ten times more stiff though...

    Cool stuff.
BUt they are too much concerned with imitating photographies instead of using the advantages an artist has over the later.

I'll have to look up this Russian guy who drew all the time in the 19th century and drowned while scetching aboard a warship in the Turkish/ Russian war.

Some of Harvey Dunns pics can be seen here, not the best quality unfortunately..

And on a related note, here's a selection of pics from the Canadian War Museum

Hey Cody - Yeah, I saw Mumsford's Baghdad Journal a couple weeks ago and was speechless.

Also, one of the best wartime sketch journalists in history was Howard Brodie.

And like the first guy in the post, Norman Rockwell was eventually assigned to sketch/paint while in wartime service, but I think he ended up doing portrait work of the higher ranking dudes.

All of these guys did or do something I don't think I'd have the presence of mind for, but I guess it'd force you to really loosen up your strokes!
